Surprise ?
Imagine trying to hide something from Johnny
You were walking your usual way home from work, when you decided to take a more scenic route through the park. You'd finished your shift early and the earlier showers had left the pavements slippery making the park even more appealing.
Autumn was your favourite season by far. The trees were either empty or they held an orange or red tinge making the scene look so warm.
You held your bag strap tighter as you trekked through the autumn scenes, taking it all in, when you came across a bench that had a cardboard box underneath it. You thought nothing of it at first, until the box started to move. Thinking it was a squirrel or mouse, you kept walking. But then the box whined. This made you stop, and you slowly turned around to examine the box. It was silent so you stalked up to it, afraid something would jump out. It whined again. You stood up straight looking around the park for any sign of life only to find it completely empty.
On closer inspection, you saw the box had writing on it in black marker but it had been smudged and distorted by the rain. The box also appeared to be soggy. You grabbed a stick near the bench and used it to pull the box closer, still hesitant. Inside the box was a wet blanket that from the looks of it used to be baby blue blanket but had just faded grey. Another whimper came from the box and you felt the sudden urge to unfold the blanket. Only to find the smallest clump of fur in the corner of the box trying to nuzzle into the slimy blanket. You crouched down to try and get a closer look and move the blanket out of the way. All the while the ball of fur was still whimpering and seemed as afraid as you were.
Then it moved. As it moved out of its ball, it looked up to see what was disturbing it only for you to realise it was a little puppy. It was all dirty and wet, it's fur stuck to it making it look bald. He was tiny and clearly malnourished and his eyes were bulging making it look more weak and helpless. You immediately reached into your bag trying to find something to feed it with. You found half of a sandwich you had left during your lunch break and ripped the chicken inside into small little pieces. You took a small bit, reaching your hand into the box. The puppy cowered but then caught the smell of the chicken, you watched as it's nose twitched and stuck out trying to get a good smell of the chicken. You held it out further and it hesitantly nibbled at it. Once it got a taste it suddenly snatched it out your hand, wolfing it down and confirming he was starving. You gave the little thing more pieces until you eventually ran out. The puppy then came running to your side of the box, expecting more food, begging for more. The sight made your heart break and you took pity on the little thing. You decided you definitely couldn't leave it here, you'd take care of it and clean it up and then take it to the vet or a kennel tomorrow.
You took your scarf off and reached in slowly to try and pick the dog up. It seemed scared at first but you moved slower trying not to make it panic.
"Come on, it's okay... that's it." You cooed.
The dog weighed next to nothing and the little thing was shivering making you wrap the towel tighter around him.
As you walked home, the dog was still shaking. The picture made you disgusted. Who could willingly adopt an animal, a baby as well, only to abandon him in the rain. It was horrible and people like that really didn't deserve to be pet owners if they weren't going to take any responsibility. You were stopped in your thoughts when you came to your door. Reaching into your bag to get your key, you were careful not to drop the puppy.
Once you were settled and into more comfy clothes, you took the puppy with you into the bathroom and placed him in the tub to stop him escaping. You went into your kitchen and rummaged around the fridge to look for any ham or meat, then placed it all into a bowl with a separate bowl for water and took it into the bathroom with you.
You placed the bowls on the windowsill and rolled your sleeves up while the dog stared at you in confusion.
"Right then buddy, what to do with you ..." you decided to look online, scrolling through your phone for a good ten minutes.
You finally settled on picking up the puppy. " Come here buddy. This is gonna be quick now, don't worry." You cradled him against your chest as you filled the sink a bit with warm water. You placed him in to see if it was shallow enough, when it was you got some soap on your hands rubbing it in a bit then started to stroke it's fur gently with it. It didn't really like it at first but then it started to relax into your touch more.
"You good there buddy ? ... are you a 'buddy' ?" You picked it up curiously.
"Yep you're a buddy alright. At least I think so.." you smiled.
After getting him all lathered up you held him under the warm tap making sure not to get anything in his eyes.
You then wrapped him in the towel and slightly rubbed him. Once he was semi-dry you brought the food down onto the bathroom floor and watched him as he practically choked it all back.
"Y/N ! I'm home !" Shit, Johnny!
You quickly got up and closed the door behind you and ran out to meet your boyfriend at the door.
"Hey!" You said, trying to act natural but reaallly failing. He looked at you suspiciously noticing your weird behaviour.
"Hey... how was your day ?" He asked slowly while looking at you with a weird but slightly amused expression. " Good. Nothing happened it was kinda boring cause nothing happened." You flashed a forced smile at the end to try and ease the lie. "Yeah...right, cool I'm gonna go take a shower is that okay?" He asked still chucking and trying to ignore how strange you were acting. "Yeah that's okay." You called after him, staying in the same spot. Wait ! "No ! No Johnny wait you can't go in there!" You sprinted after him. Wedding yourself between him and the door. "Okay. What is going on with you ! You've been freaking me out since I stepped into the house." "It's nothing honestly, it's just.." there was a faint scratching noise coming from the door. You both slowly looked down at the foot of the door. "Nothing. It's nothing." You whispered, slightly kicking the door to get him to knock it off.
"Y/N open the door." He said sternly. "Johnny really there's nothing in there, I just had ... Mexican for lunch and you don't wanna go in there, really give it a minute." You tried laughing it off but he wasn't laughing. Your smile faded. " For your sake ." You exhaled. He gave you a sceptical look and just scoffed while walking away.
You sighed, letting out a breath or relief. You opened the door slightly, squeezing yourself through the gap. "Buddy!" You whisper-shouted trying not to get Johnnys attention. "Buddy where are you?" He suddenly came running out from underneath the bath. You sighed and chuckled lightly. "Come here you naughty boy, you almost got me caught." You picked him up and he licked your hands while his small tail wagged. The two bowl were now empty and the puppy was fully dry looking a lot healthier and cleaner, this made you a lot happier. You quickly smuggled the cavalier into the living room trying to hide him in the blanket in your lap while you turned the TV on to block out any noises he'd make.
You heard the bathroom door close and knew that Johnny was going to be looking for something to catch you out. As you sat on the sofa, playing with the little puppy in your lap, you decided to go look for a little ball or bit of string for him to play with, leaving him wrapped in the blankets.
You searched your room to find a small stress ball he could play with for a little bit. You walked back to the room finding the door was open. "I'm sure I closed that."
You stepped into the room only to be met by the sight of ...
"Johnny !" You exclaimed. "Ummmm, i can explain?" Not sure if he wanted an explanation or not. "Where did this dog come from Y/N" Johnny was to busy fussing over the dog to look at you so you just watched on as he played with him. "I found him in a box in the park, he was in a state John. I couldn't leave him there." You say in a pleading tone, kneeling next to him. "I'll call the vet or something tomorrow, I swear but can we just keep him here for tonight? I cleaned him and fed him already just let him have a wrest." You begged. "Okay." "Please Johnny I know you're probably not ready for-" "Y/N, I said okay." He laughed. "Oh." You said I'm realisation. "I guess I expected you to tell me off. " you shrugged and he rolled his eyes.
"What's your name little fella?" "I don't know yet, I've just been calling him buddy." "Well that's a good nickname but what about something like, I don't know... Max ?" " Really?" You say in disbelief , "isn't that a bit, well, typical ?" "Nah, I think it suits him." "Okay then, max it is." "So tomorrow, I'll take him to the vet, see if he's all healthy and then you better be ready-" "Be ready to say goodbye, yeah I know." " No. I was actually gonna say better be ready to take care of all his needs. I think it would be good idea for ALL of us if .....we keep him." He sighed while standing up. "Really! Oh, thankyou Johnny !!! Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou !" You ran to him giving him pecks on the cheek between each thankyou. He was laughing while the dog barked due to the excitement. "You hear that max,
You can live with us now!" You picked him up as he gave you small licks over your face making you laugh even more.
Johnny was laughing just as hard from beside you. He was thinking about why you would hide this from him, he could never be mad by seeing this sight. If anything it made him love you even more for being so caring and seeing you be so happy and smiling like that.
It made his heart melt from the cuteness you two shared . He could tell this would be the right decision. The dog was already getting spoiled and he knew it would only get worse over time.
You caught him staring at you and knew he was deep in thought so you decided to snap him out of it by holding max to your face and turning to Johnny.
"Surprise!" You both laughed.
(Little Max)
