To be young again...
~Johnny's P.O.V~
I woke up early the next morning to get things ready for Ruby; I was determined to make her a kid again. It was Saturday so we could spend the whole day together; I started by getting out her outfit for the day. I found some of her clothes that she used to wear that should still fit:
Next I went downstairs to the kitchen; Bratty-Beth was gone to work so I made Ruby's favorite breakfast: A peanut butter and chocolate sauce sundae with fudge, marshmallows and a cherry on top. Okay, so she's never actually ate that for breakfast, but she's always wanted to. I even made the toppings in the shape of a smiley face.
I brought it up to her room and put it on her nightstand and then I shook her trying to wake her up.
She groaned and rolled over muttering something about five more minutes.
I frowned and walked over to her old toy chest, where I slept, and grabbed her old air horn. I walked over to her and put the air horn right next to her head and pushed the button and the top.
*BLAAAAAAAAAAARRRRE*
Ruby jumped and rolled right on to the floor, holding her ear in pain.
"Johnny!" she said.
"Good morning!" I said.
"What do you mean good morning?" she said angrily "It's Saturday!" she glanced at her alarm clock. "And it's eight-thirty in the morning! I'm supposed to sleep in, you lunatic!"
"Not today, you're not!" I said, helping her up. "We're going to have fun today! Just like in the old days! I got a full schedule!"
She looked at me "are you on something?"
"Yeah, the floor!" I replied "now eat your breakfast, I made your favourite sundae!"
"Ice cream for breakfast?" she said disgusted.
"You don't like ice cream?"
"Not in the morning" she shook her head "besides it'll go straight to my hips!"
"No, it'll go straight to your stomach!" I smiled; take a spoonful and holding it to her mouth. "C'mon, one bite?"
She closed her mouth tight and shook her head.
I smirked and pinched her nose, so she couldn't breathe and would have to open her mouth. Once she opened her mouth gasping, I shoved the spoon in.
She swallowed and looked at me. Then took the sundae and began to eat the rest of it. When she was done eating the whole thing, she looked at me as I grinned triumphantly.
"I just didn't want to waste it" she said, wiping the chocolate sauce from her mouth.
"Ummm-hmmm" I said smugly "now hurry up and get dressed."
"Why?" she asked "Where are we going?"
"To the park" I answered.
"For what?" she asked.
"To play, what else?" I shrugged.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I managed to get her dressed, out the door and to the park but when we finally got there she just sat on the bench... like a grown up.
I walked up to her. "C'mon, play!" I told her "We got the whole park to ourselves!"
"I'm too old to play" she said, feeling insecure.
"You're never too old to play with your friend" I grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the slides.
She dragged her feet up the stairs to the big slide. "Johnny, please! I can't do this!"
"Why not?" I asked "Are you scared?"
"No, it's just"-
"Prove it! Go down the big slide!" I said.
"Fine!" she said.
She slid down the slide and when she came out, she was smiling. "Do you wanna go on the swings?" she asked standing up.
"I thought you'd never ask!" I exclaimed, smiling.
She sat on a swing and I pushed her, when she got high enough I stood back and watched her face the sky.
She laughed. "It feels like I'm flying!" she yelled.
I grinned; she was finally acting like a kid again! She was going higher and then she jumped right off the swing. I laughed as she landed in the sand. Only she didn't get back up...
"Ruby?" I asked walking up to her. I rolled her over and shook her shoulders. "RUBY!" I said scared.
She threw some sand at me and laughed. "Gotcha!" she said.
I smiled and stuck out my tongue at her.
She did the same. "Race you to the monkey bars?" she asked.
I nodded and ran but I let her win.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We walked home from the park, covered in sand and sweat; we were about two blocks from Ruby's house. When I saw that boy Ruby was looking at in the school office coming toward us. Ruby started to dust herself off and fix her hair.
"Hey, Ruby!" he waved.
"Oh, hi Justin!" she said.
He came up to her. "I was just looking for you!" he said.
"Really?" Ruby and I said in unison ,although hers sounded more enthusiastic.
"Yeah! Uh...I was wondering if you'd like to go to the spring formal at school on tuesday?" he asked.
WHAT! No! This was going to ruin everything! Ruby will fall for this guy and start to act grown up again! Say no, Ruby! Say no! N-O!
"That would be great!" she said.
GAH! I thought.
"Cool, so pick you up around seven-thirty-ish" he said.
"Okay, I'll be ready!" she said waving as her left.
She ran the rest of the way home. I struggled to keep up and when I finally got to her house, I found her up in her room looking through her closet. She picked out a blue dress.
"What do you think of this?" she asked, holding it against her.
"This is a mistake" I told her.
"Yeah, your so right, blue isn't even my color?" she said, looking closer at the dress.
"I'm talking about you going out with that guy!" I said "what do you even like about him?"
"He's cute" she said.
I looked at her.
She rolled her eyes. "It's a girl thing" she said.
"What else?" I asked, jealous.
"He's really sweet" she sighed dreamily.
"Have you ever spoken to him before?"
"Well, no, I was always too nervous" she said.
"But what about all the fun we had today at the park!" I said desperately "Remember? The park?"
"Johnny, do you ever grow up?" she asked.
I felt another sharp pain in my middle, this one was bigger and the pain spread to my sides. It made my knee's feel weak, but Ruby was too busy looking in her closet to notice.
I sat in the corner of the room watching her; she modeled a few of them for me and I nodded, pouting or gave a thumbs up.
There was nothing I could do about it, Ruby was growing up and going on her first date.
