summer of '85 pt. 3

when they got home was when john and sherlock sat down and talked about moving. they talked for days and john was more on boat than sherlock.

"but what about how they'll treat danny and alex?" sherlock asked one night as they got ready for bed.

"what d'you mean?" john asked from the bathroom.

"how will people treat them when they know we're their parents?" sherlock asked. "we got enough shit just being down there for five days, imagine them growing up there."

john walked out of the bathroom, turning the light off. he went to the bed and sat on the edge of sherlock's side, placing a hand on his knee. "we already know what we want to do. we need to talk to the kids and if they want to, then we'll do it." he said and gave sherlock a kiss. "don't worry about them that much. danny can fight for herself and god knows alex will prove his point even if he was to scream it." john said as he got up. "god he's got a loud voice."

sherlock chuckled. "do you really think they'll want to move there?" he asked as he watched john get in bed.

"i think we should let them decided." john said as turned his table lamp off. he looked over at sherlock and gave him a small smile. "even if they want to move, we'll have to wait because they've already started the school year and it'd be better for them to finish up the year before we move. you're worrying too much, love."

sherlock sighed and turned his table lamp off, laying down. "i just want to make sure we're doing the right thing."

the next night at dinner, the usual happened. john got home before it was served then during dinner, his kids told them about how school was and then john asked the question.

"how would you guys feel if we moved to the farm?"

"like, now?" danny asked.

"no, not until the summer time." sherlock said. "you're dad and i have been thinking about it."

"i could see nate!" alex exclaimed. "and miss molly!"

john smiled at his son. "and grandma and pap and granny." he said then looked over at his daughter. "and you could see the friends you made there as well."

"but what about my friends here?" danny asked. "what about your jobs and the house?"

"we've already gone through everything." john said to his daughter. "we just want to know if you want to move there."

"yes!"

"no!"

john sighed and looked at his daughter. "we don't need an answer now, you can think about it danny."

"i don't want to think about it. i don't want to move." she said, getting up from her seat and running upstairs, slamming her door.

john sighed, rubbing his face with his hands. he looked over at sherlock. "just let her be." sherlock said softly.

"i want to move, daddy." alex said across from john. "i like the animals there."

john smiled, chuckling softly. "why don't you help me clean up dinner, and we can have extra dessert."

"okay!" alex exclaimed, grabbing his plate the sliding off his chair, running into the kitchen.

john got up, collect his plate along with sherlock's and danny's. "talk with her. please." he said to sherlock.

"this is your mess, john."

john sighed. "just please do it, sherlock." he said before going into the kitchen.

sherlock got up and headed upstairs, going to danny's room and standing in the door way. "who ya texting?" he asked.

"amber and lily." she sniffled. "i don't wanna move!"

sherlock sighed and stepped into her daughters room, closing the door before sitting on her bed and taking the ipod from her.

"give it back papa!" she exclaimed, reaching for the device.

"tell me why you don't want to leave." he said, pocketing the ipod.

danny crosses her arms over her chest and let out a huff. "i like it here. i have friends here."

"yeah, but what about haley and emily from the fair? and that other girl?" sherlock asked.

"their moms told them not to talk to me because of you and dad." she muttered.

"that doesn't matter." sherlock said. "there are so many other people there that would having you as their friend. and if their parents have a problem with your dad or i, they come to us and your dad will put them in their place."

"really?" she asked, looking up at her father.

sherlock nodded. "before you and alex were here, a client of mine refused to have me after she found out i was dating another man. you know what your dad did?"

"what?" danny asked with a small smile.

"he went to that woman's house and told her that she should not judge me because i'm gay and then showed her how many cases i had won. she came to the office the next day and let me work her case."

"did dad really do that?"

sherlock nodded. "your dad won't take any one's crap about us being together. and if you ever have a problem like that again, go and tell him because he will deal with it."

danny smiled timidly. "do i have time to think about it?" she asked.

sherlock nodded. "you have plenty of time. there's no dead line." he said as he stood up, giving his daughter her ipod back. "don't stay up too late, you have school tomorrow."

danny took the ipod. "i won't." she said as she fell into her back.

it wasn't until the summer of 2011 that the family moved. they didn't move onto a farm, they moved in town in a very nice house in the village for as alex would say, "rich people." the day they drove to moving truck, sherlock's parents were already at the house along with john's mom. with everyone there, they got the truck unloaded in time for dinner and then they feasted on pizza from the local pizza place.

it took a full week for the family to get completely moved in. the whole summer sherlock worked and john only worked half until he retired from the head of security and took over the holmes' farm. he would take alex and sometimes danny would come along every morning and john would teach them about how to do things on the farm. alex was excited about it while danny went to her grandparents house and stayed there until her dad was done for the day. eventually, john got danny out to the barn and taught her how to take care of the horses in the stalls. also john taught alex how to show sheep and alex begged his father to let him enter into the fair until john said yes.

by the fair week, john and sherlock we back in the barns as the ass crack of dawn, taking care of animals. this time, they sat up in the stands as they watched their son show his sheep, smiling proudly.

"dad!" danny said, pulling on her dad's arm. "come look what we found!" she said with a giant grin. "you too papa!" she said, grabbing her father's arm and pulling them into the barn. she led them into the corner of the barn were picture frames were lined up. "it's you two!" she exclaimed, pointing at two pictures.

"god i can't believe they still have these up." sherlock said as he looked at his picture with his steer.

"i know," john said as he looked at sherlock's. "you look so thrilled." he chuckled.

"shut up." sherlock said.

"how old were you there?" danny asked.

"it was '85 so we were both, what? eighteen?" john asked sherlock.

sherlock nodded. "that was the year we started dating."

"you've been dating since 1985?" danny asked in amazement.

john and sherlock both looked at each other with dork smiles and nodded. "yea."

"holy crap."

by the end of the night, alex said he was staying the night with nate and danny was staying with her friends, leaving john and sherlock with the house by themselves.

john handed sherlock his glass of wine as he sat on the sofa next to him, staring at the lawyer with heart eyes. "what?" sherlock asked as he took a sip of his wine.

"we've been together for twenty seven years." john said with a smile.

sherlock smiled back. "it's been a good twenty seven years."

john nodded. "it has." he said, patting sherlock's knee before standing up. "remember when i was deployed?" he asked sherlock as he walked over to the closet underneath the stair well.

"of course. worst years of my life." sherlock muttered, taking another swing of his wine.

john chuckled, stepping into the closet and digging around for a bit. he stepped out with a tatted show box, closing the door and sitting on the sofa next to sherlock. "i kept the pictures. and i had ma send me some." he said as he opened the box. "kept all your letters too. forgot where this thing was until we moved." he said as he took out the stacks of letters, setting them on the coffee table.

"you kept everything?" sherlock asked, setting his wine on the coffee table as he looked into the box with john, reaching for photos.

john nodded as he went through some himself. "those pictures in the barn got me thinkin' about all the other pictures." he said. "this one was my favorite." john said as he showed twenty year old sherlock, sitting on the pool side, feet hanging in with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and his round sunglasses on as his pale chest sparkled in the sun.

"oh my god." sherlock said, taking the photo. "i remember the photo you sent back," he said with a grin. "shit, i may still have it." sherlock said and got up quickly, going upstairs.

john continued to look through the photos. he looked through the ones his mom had sent him, of him and sherlock in their teens with their arms around each other tightly dressed up in their show clothes or standing in the river, soaking wet. either way, they had massive smiles on their faces and john wanted to cry at the sight of them. the poor boys that had no idea what the future held for them.

sherlock came back downstairs with his old converse shoe box, plopping down on the floor between john's legs. "i kept your letters too, and the few photos." sherlock said as he dug though the box, taking out a polaroid of john in his army pants with his shirt tucked in and stuck tightly to his skin. he had a grin on his face as he stared at the camera, knowing exactly who it was going to.

john took it, replacing it one of them dated 1984 and it was them, sitting at the table as they did their homework, studying for finals.

"god, we were so young." sherlock said, setting the photo on the coffee table. he picked up his stacks of letters.

he went through them as john showed him photos here and there, looking for a specific letter. once he found it, he handed it to john, turning around and looking up at him.

"97 was when they released me." john said as he read the envelope. "is this the one?" he asked.

sherlock smiled and nodded. "go ahead, read it."

john took the paper carefully out of the envelope. he rested against the sofa, unfolding the papers as he started to read his sloppy cursive.

My love,
I'm coming home. I'm coming to D.C. and I'll be with you. I'll finally be home. No more leaving, I'm staying. I'm staying full time and I want to get married. The first state to legalize it, we're going there. We're going to write vows, exchange rings and have the honeymoon of a lifetime. I promise you. I've never loved anyone as much as I love you, Sherlock Holmes and my heart aches every time I think of holding you again. By the time you get this, I'll already be there, but just encase something happens along the way, you'll have this letter to know I'm coming home. Enjoy this ring I won at an arcade. Of course I'll get you something better, but this'll have to do for now. I love you.
-John

john looked at sherlock and sniffled, taking his hand and looking at the ring sherlock had made specially because he didn't want to give up the plastic one. he held sherlock's hand as he kissed him deeply. "i love you. so much." he muttered.

"i love you, too." sherlock smiled, pulling john down for another kiss.

a/n: alright, i'm done. i just thought it needed more than i gave. also comment an au or something you want me to write johnlock style.
