summer of '85 pt. 2
john and sherlock had a good standing relationship. they wrote letters to each other and had occasional phone call and they did spend thanksgiving at the macy's parade, but spent chirstmas and new years at home which was a mistake. they both decided on leaving and spending new years in washington dc, which was their best decision. while in dc, john went to the recruiters office and signed up, with the encouragement from sherlock. he dropped out of the next semester at his university, cleared out his dorm then stayed with sherlock until he had to leave from basic.
john called his mother the following day and told her the news and got some tears, but then got his mother's full support and he was happy about that.
after basic, john had nine days to visit family. the first two he spent going back to page to visit him mom, but the second he stepped foot into the town everyone knew and was revolted by him being there. he was chased out before he could see his mom and he was devastated. he went to cambridge and spent the last of his days with sherlock before he was sent to missouri. he was in missouri for five months before being sent to san antonio. he was in san antonio for a year before getting the news that he was being sent overseas. to afghanistan. at that point he wished he didn't enlist and that he just wanted to see sherlock.
afghanistan lasted a year and a half. he always kept in touch with his mom and sherlock but it took a while for letters to get back and forth and john always got an hour of call time once a month and he split it between sherlock and his mom. sometimes john received pictures of sherlock in his letters and john kept a small box of them. he also asked him mom to send a few of him and sherlock and she sent more than a few, but john didn't care. there was one of him and his mom that john kept on him in field along with the most recent one sherlock had sent of him.
when john left afghanistan he was sent to a base in massachusetts. two hours away from cambridge and john couldn't have been happier. before he had left, he sent a letter to his mom and not sherlock. sherlock would get his letter in person and john couldn't be more excited. he would get to see his boyfriend after three years. he would be able to hold sherlock and kiss him and talk to him in person and he was excited.
after four days of being at the base, they gave john fourteen days to visit family. john took a train to cambridge, getting in late and running to sherlock's addresses where the letters were sent from. john knocked on the door and saw the lights turn off from inside and he stopped. he rested his forehead on the door and sighed. "it's me, sherlock." he said. "it's john."
the locked clicked on the door and then it opened slowly. sherlock's eyes peeked through the crack before he swung the door open and flung himself onto john.
fifteen years later, sherlock was one of the best lawyers in the dc area and john was head is security at the white house. john stood around the white house for ten hours a day before going home to his family. him and sherlock adopted a little girl a year ago who was now four and they now have a baby boy.
"daddy!" the small girl squealed as john walked through the front door.
john chuckled and picked up the girl, kissing her cheek before setting her on the ground. "where's papa?" he asked.
"making dinner." his daughter said, giggling some.
"and where's alex?" he asked.
"sleeping." she said in a whisper.
john chuckled and picked his daughter up, carrying her into the kitchen. he set her at the table in her chair then walked into the kitchen, going to sherlock and giving him a kiss. "smells good." he said.
sherlock smiled. "we have a guest tonight." he said as he added some seasoning to the dinner.
"who?" john asked as he grabbed the plates from the cupboard.
"you'll see." sherlock said and picked up the deep dish with a roast in it, carrying to the table. "no eating yet." sherlock said to his daughter before returning to the kitchen.
john went to the table and set four places instead of three. he went back into the kitchen to get glasses when the doorbell rang. sherlock took the glasses from him then told him to get it.
john went to the door and opened it, surprised by the person person standing there. "mom." he said with a smile. "come in." he said and opened the door more so she could walk in. he closed the door as he looked at his mother. he pulled her in for a hug and sniffled. "i've missed you."
"i've missed you too." she said as she rubbed her son's back. she pulled away and took a good look at her now grown son. "you've grown well." she said.
john chuckled then sniffled.
"why you crying daddy?" the voice of his daughter asked.
mrs watson gasped and turned around to look at the voice of the girl.
john walked over to his daughter. "they're happy tears." he said then looked back at his mom who looked like she was about to cry. "danny, this is your grandma." he said.
"ma, this is danielle." he said with a small smile. "we call her danny."
danny hid behind her father's leg as mrs watson got closer. "hi danny," she smiled, crouching down.
danny waved shyly. "hi." she said softly.
"don't be scared." john said to his daughter, detaching her from his leg.
danny walked over to mrs watson slowly. "you're a beautiful girl, danielle." mrs watson said to her granddaughter.
"thank you." danny said.
"the table's ready." sherlock announced as he walked over to john.
mrs watson looked up and stood, looking over at what was practically her second son. she held her arms out, signaling she wanted a hug. sherlock walked over to mrs watson and hugged her tightly.
the family settled down for dinner and that's when conversation started. danny told her grandma about what they were learning in school and counted to twenty to show off her skills. after that, john told his mom about what him and sherlock had been doing and how they've been doing.
after dinner, danny insisted that she showed her grandma all her toys, so mrs watson was dragged into the living room while the two men cleaned up dinner. once they finished, they went into the living room and sherlock sat on sofa next to john, placing a hand on his knee as they watched their daughter play with her grandma.
when the baby monitor started to go off, mrs watson looked over at her son in shock. john got up and turned the monitor off, going upstairs to retrieve his crying son. when he walked back downstairs he stood in front of his mom. "this is alex." he said softly. "would you like to hold him?" he asked.
mrs watson nodded, holding her arms out.
john passed his son to her carefully, watching tears come to his mom's eyes. "danny, get with your grandma and let me take a picture, okay?" he asked.
danny nodded and climbed onto the sofa, sitting next to her grandma. sherlock walked over to john with the camera. "go sit with them." he said softly.
john went over to danny and lifted her up in a playful way, sitting on the sofa, placing her in his lap.
"now smile." sherlock said as he held up the camera.
after both kids were put down for the night, mrs watson insisted that she headed to her hotel because she had to leave early. she said her goodbyes to both her grown up boys then told them to call and to visit soon. after she hugged her son for a long time, she left.
it wasn't until the summer of 2010 that the two drove to their home town with their two kids. danny was a very dramatic twelve year old while alex had just turned six and never ran out of energy. they waited so long to visit because sherlock was scared of facing his parents. even though he had called them and they both said that they accepted him, he was still on edge because he didn't believe them. on the other hand, john's father was still the homophobic asshole, but it wasn't as bad as when john was eighteen.
when they reached their small home town, both men felt a small wave of comfort as they drove through town, seeing how things have changed and seeing the things that were still the exact same.
"where are we?" danny asked her parents as she looked out her window at the acres of farm land.
"this is where your father and i grew up." sherlock said, looking back at his daughter.
"there's nothing here." she said in disgust.
sherlock chuckled then looked at his son. "what d'you think alex?" he asked.
alex looked at his dad and smiled, belting out a long moo that made both his parents laugh.
john took a left and drove up the long driveway that belonged to his childhood house. his stomach churned as he looked at the house, seeing his father and mother standing on the porch. he parked the car next to his father's truck then got out.
"stay in the car." he said to his kids before closing his car door and walking up to his parents.
sherlock got out and watched from the car. he saw mrs watson hug her son then saw the tension between father and son. mr watson looked at the car then said something to john before walking back into the house. sherlock got back into the car and looked at both his kids. "stay quiet when your dad gets into the car, alright?" he asked, watching both his kids nod.
john got into the car angrily. "we're staying with your parents and if they don't want us there then we're going home." he said to sherlock as he backed out some before turning the car around in the grass and driving down the gravel road again.
sherlock's parents were more welcoming. they both hugged their son and mrs holmes cried when she met her grandkids. then they both hugged john when they saw them. the last time they saw sherlock was the christmas they came down and they both were still on edge about their son and didn't give him the love he deserved.
"so you and dad grew up here?" danny asked her father.
john nodded. "yep." he said as he took in sherlock's old room that was now a guest room.
"how come grandma only visited us at home? why didn't pap and granny visit?" she asked.
john sighed and looked down at his daughter. "because your father hadn't contacted his parents in twenty five years."
"why?" she asked.
"because they didn't accept the relationship between your father and i. no one here did except your grandma."
"but there's nothing wrong with you and dad." danny said.
john laughed softly. "they thought there was."
"why'd they care? it was none of their business."
john chuckled. "come on, let's get something to eat." he said and directed his daughter out of the bedroom.
the day they spent showing their kids around the town then that night, they went to the fair. everyone there was shocked to see the holmes and watson boys there, holding hands with two kids, but they didn't care. they watched their kids ride the rides together then danny made some friends and john and sherlock let her go off with them as long as she met them at the ticket booth by ten thirty. they took alex to the rides for the smaller kids, watching him have the time of his life. they went to the barn with alex, and sherlock and john both had a sudden flashbacks of the place.
"look at the pigs papa!" alex exclaimed, pointed at the pigs laying down in a pen.
"yeah," sherlock chuckled.
"ya know, alex," john said, "your papa and i used to enter our pigs in the fair." he crouched down next to his son.
"really?" alex asked.
john nodded. "we also showed sheep and steer and sometimes goats." he said to his son.
"so you and papa were farmers?" he asked.
sherlock laughed softly. "you could say that."
"john? sherlock?" a woman's voice asked from behind them.
they both turned around to see molly hooper standing in front of them. "hey, molly!" john smiled at her, giving her a hug.
"i heard that you were in town but i didn't think it was true." she said then gave sherlock a hug.
"yeah," sherlock chuckled.
"who are you?" alex asked.
molly looked down at the boy. "i'm molly." she said, crouching down to the boy. "who are you?" she asked
alex looked up at john and john gave him a nod. "i'm alex." he said.
"well, hello there alex." molly said with a smile. "i have a son your age. his name is nathan."
"really?" john asked.
molly nodded and stood up. she walked around the corner then returned with a boy the same height and age of alex that looked exactly like his mother. "nate, this is mr john and sherlock and their son alex. can you say hello?"
"hi!" nate exclaimed, waving at them.
"hi nate." alex said to the boy. "i'm alex."
"mommy can he ride rides with me?" he asked, pulling on the bottom of molly's shirt.
"why don't you ask him that?"
nate turned back to alex. "do you want to ride rides with me?" he asked.
alex looked up at his parents. "can i?" he asked.
they both chuckled at nodded.
"then yes!" alex exclaimed. "let's go papa and miss molly." he said as he left the barn with his new friend.
the parents followed after them, laughing at how the two acted.
"how've you been?" john asked as their sons rode the ride that looked like small race cars on a racetrack. "what've you been doing?"
"i teach at the high school." molly said. "they just built a new one and the old one is now the middle school."
"wow." john said.
molly nodded. "how've you two been? no one has seen you since you both left that chirstmas."
"we've been in dc." sherlock said. "i'm a lawyer and john works in the white house."
"that's so cool!" molly exclaimed. "do you have any other kids other than alex?"
sherlock nodded. "yeah, we have a daughter. danielle is her name."
"that's amazing!" molly said happily. "i'm glad you two were able to still be together after what happened."
john and sherlock both looked at each other and smiled. "we're happy that we are together."
"are you married yet?" she asked.
john shook his head. "it's not legal in virginia yet. but when they make it legal, we'll get married." he said with a smile, holding sherlock's hand.
"i told john we could back to massachusetts and get married, but he didn't want to." sherlock said to molly.
"don't listen to him, he's still full of shit. he's the one that didn't want to get eloped." john said.
molly laughed softly and their conversation was interrupted by their sons running to them before running to the next ride and they just followed.
the rest of the night, they stuck with molly, talking about the town as they followed their sons from ride to ride until ten hit and both boys were wore out. molly took her son and left sherlock and john, telling them that they need to meet for lunch and have a real conversation without the kids and they both agreed. by ten forty, the family was heading back to the car. alex was asleep on john as danny told her parents what all happened tonight. when they got back to the holmes' household, both kids were out. john woke danny up while sherlock carried alex into the house.
once the kids were asleep, john and sherlock went downstairs and mrs holmes made them coffee and they sat at the dining room table. mr holmes joined them after a while and they all began talked.
"john and i have been thinking about moving here." sherlock said his their parents.
"really?" mr holmes asked excitedly.
"it's not official, but tonight molly brought it up and it got us thinking. we both miss it here and the city is becoming a lot for the kids now that they're older and i think it'd be good for alex and danny to live here. they really like it." sherlock said.
"but what about your jobs?" mrs holmes asked.
"dc isn't that far and i can drive every morning if i leave early enough and john wants to start farming again."
"i can take over the farm since you're reaching retirement, mr holmes and until then i can just work security at the white house. that way you don't have to pay anyone to work or give up the farm." john said.
"but what about your parents farm?" mr holmes asked.
john shrugged. "my father hates me, and when he puts it up on the market, i'll buy it."
"then again all of this is just an idea." sherlock said, looking at john. "let's not get ahead of ourselves."
john laughed softly. "sorry, i'm getting excited." he muttered into his coffee as he took a sip. "it's just been such a long time. i miss it here."
"i think it'd be good for alex to grow up here." mrs holmes said. "the city isn't a place for a growing boy like alex. and just maybe he grow up to be like his father. star quarterback and four year running grand prize sheep." she said, giving john a wink.
john chuckled. "he does love animals."
"and danny could learn a lot here as well." mrs holmes said. "she was so excited at the fair every time she passed the booth she'd stop and say hi to me."
john chuckled and look over at sherlock who had a soft smile on his face. "we'll think about it. ask the kids what they want." john said.
sherlock nodded in agreement. "it won't be for another year or two, but we'll see what happens."
