The noise of a crowd echoed throughout Hero's Forge as they were gathered to watch the first match in a long time between human and troll. Vendal, the tall goat troll, announced the beginning of the match with a booming voice that echoed the very core of the Heartstone and throughout Trollmarket, "The Trollhunter has laid a challenge before the son of his predecessor, and you shall all bear witness to the ensuing battle, which will be one for the ages..."
Jim cringed when he looked at the arena of his training grounds, getting one good look of his death bed, then he looked at the letters he had in his hands before turning towards you and Toby. "Hey, I...I want you guys to have these," he solemnly sighed.
"What's this?" you questioned. Your furrowed eyebrows showed your confusion, but your slightly glaring eyes told him you already knew what the contents of the letter was.
"It says everything I ever wanted to say to you guys," Jim looked down after he mumbled.
Almost speechless, you gaped your mouth somewhat to say anything and even refused horrifyingly, but Toby beat you to the punch.
"You promised me tacos," he pointed a finger accusingly. During this shocking moment, you didn't know what Toby was trying to say, but you weren't exactly in the right state of mind to confront Jim so you watched as the exchange plays out.
You heard Jim scoff, "Now is not the time for lunch, Tobes."
Toby continued, "Last week, we went for tacos. I paid. You said, 'Next time on me.' You're going to get this letter back unopened after the fight," he gestured towards the letter before tapping it onto Jim's chest, "and when you get back, we'll get tacos." Toby smiled up at you as well, a silent signal to say something. Jim followed Toby's line of sight at you and looked at you expecting with hopeful eyes. You saw the heavy bags underneath them and how pale his skin looked. He was almost ghostly and it scared you to no end.
You smiled softly before taking a breath, "Jim, you'll get both of our letters unopened because we know you'll make it. When you do, we go out to eat tacos like we usually do."
Jim halfheartedly chuckled, "Tacos sound good."
The three of you flinched as Vendal started announcing again. As he was broadcasting the arrival of Draal, it seemed the blue troll was loved and favored as he made an appearance of what you would compare to a rock star would make their entrance. He thumped his chest as the crowd cheered in his glory. Aaarrrgghh!!! padded Jim's shoulder in comfort a little too roughly as he jolted forward from the impact. The big beast smiled down at him as Jim looked up with a cheesy smile. You looked to where Toby disappeared to, only to find him a distance away behind the said beast. He was hunched over the opened envelope Jim gave him.
You gasped, "I thought you said you would give it back to Jim!"
"I will!" he cried out slightly only to hush you from being overheard.
"Unopened!" you added.
"Well," Toby excused, "aren't you curious about what Jim wrote to you, too?"
You paused as you stared at the neat letter in your hands. Of course, you were curious, who wouldn't be? But the only thing stopping you was the thought of Jim's final words to you behind the seal. The word final meant the end, and you believed it wouldn't be that case for him just like you said the night before. It's a thought that would never come up in your mind and you wouldn't start now. "Yeah," you exhaled, "but that doesn't mean I want to know what his final words would be when I know for a fact Jim will make it out of this alive."
Toby gushed, completely disregarding what you said, "He thinks that way about me?"
You rolled your eyes, "Why do I even bother?"
There was a cry of euphoria and your attention went to Blinky hugging Jim, "He read the book!"
"Books tasty," Aaarrrgghh!!! added innocently.
Soon enough, the wise troll up above started announcing Jim's entrance with a bit of hesitation from the mispronunciation of his mother's name. The bias in the arena was apparent as the gate was opened and Jim's company was greeted with the crowd's booing. You huffed at the trolls in frustration. It wasn't hard to see the popular opinion of a human Trollhunter in Trollmarket. You just hoped this fight would change most, if not all, the trolls' mind. You and the others stayed behind as Jim took a deep breath to step forward with two bulky trolls that were escorting him.
Blinky shouted one last encouragement before he was too far away to hear, "Fight from your heart, Master Jim. It's strong, stronger than any rock," then he mumbled as the gate closed abruptly, "And certainly, stronger than mine."
"Prepare for battle," Vendal announced finally, and like that, the fight started. Draal pounded the ground to intimate the opponent while Jim simply shown his amulet as it transformed him into a knight in armor. The grip on the bar in front of you tightened as you saw Jim encouraging himself. There was a loud metal noise as the forge started moving and shifting into a course you would never imagine being on. Jim was unfortunately on a rising pedestal and you saw his head peaked out from the top to look down. His attention went back to Draal only for his gaze to follow the moving ground below his feet. He dodged and ran away from Draal, but it wasn't enough as the much bigger troll caught up to him and tossed him to the side of the forge enough to create a crate from the impact. He fell from the wall to catch his footing from the landing.
"Ooh," you panicked while covering your face, "I can't watch."
Toby pulled down your arms, despite his own worries and said, "It's okay, [Name], look."
Sure enough, from the highest point, Draal curled into a ball and rolled around the stadium. Jim stood his ground in a stance as he watched the troll practically mess with him. As he saw Draal coming back around after building enough momentum, Jim threw Daylight centered at the troll stopping any more movement. The sword stuck right in front of the blue brute almost mockingly as he stared at it in bewilderment. Jim summoned back the brilliant sword and he wore a smile on his face like he was surprised about the outcome of that strategy. Everyone went silent and gaped at him, shocked that he had a trick like that up his sleeve.
"I never taught him that," Blinky wondered, "Did you?"
"He's a natural!" Toby complimented.
"Go Jim!" you cheered loudly almost breaking your voice box. You wanted to cry from how Jim's fight had moved you, but it wasn't over yet.
He quickly glanced at you and shared a small smile before turning back to swing his sword for another attack. He threw again only for Draal to be prepared as he simply knocked the sword away. The Trollhunter's hand was still stretched out from the throw as he slacked from the failed attempt. It seemed he could only get away with that move once and not again. The blue troll roared at the mockery as he began rolling again as Jim ran away.
"Ten whole seconds! He's not dead!" Blinky exclaimed as he counted on his fingers, "That's a fortuitous sign."
You and the others watched as Jim ran by your area screaming for his life. You glared over at the mentor as you hissed, "Not helping, Blinky."
"Don't jinx," Aaarrrgghh grumbled, agreeing with you.
You covered your breathing canals as Draal quickly passed you, picking up debris. The troll easily caught up to Jim to pass him and block his path. The troll took this advantage as Jim stopped to punch a square hit. The glow from his armor came from the impact and you only hoped that it meant the suit took the hit for him. It still terrified you as you cried out with Toby, "Jim!"
Blinky covered his eyes as he instructed, "Look away!" The pacifist brute behind covered Toby's and your eyes as he looked away. "We will not remember him like this."
"No!" you cried out even more as you shoved the large stony hand out of the way.
The light dimmed to show Jim barely moving as he blinked away the pain and dizziness. Almost immediately, Draal picked up Jim by his leg to toss him in the air multiple times to punch him every time. He laughed at the pain he was causing and punched him so hard up the arena again. You saw Jim holding his side and limping. As if being beat up wasn't enough, the ground beneath him started moving and now, he was hanging off one of the turned ledges as Draal took in his glory. The troll walked up the ledge and stomped off Jim's fingers. Jim managed to slide off onto steady ground, but you had enough.
"He's getting killed out there!" you cried out as you ran straight through the bars to get to Jim. Before you could get too far, you felt a large, stone hand grab the back of your top to drag you back into the secluded area. Toby had the same idea as you, but was already held back by the other hand of Aaarrrgghh!!! who also had a sad stricken face. "Let me go! I have to help him!"
"You cannot, Lady [Name]," Blinky said in a calming voice, yet there was a distressing tone to it, "This is Jim's fight."
"Forget about whose fight it is," you exclaimed, "we're talking about someone's life!"
"Lady [Name]," Blinky tried again, "If I'm not mistaken, you were the one who said and believed he would win this fight. Let him prove that theory."
You stayed silent as you watched the fight again and tears welled at the corner of your eyes as you watched Draal get closer to his downed opponent. With new determination, Jim turned around and swung his leg around to kick the troll in the crotch. Draal cried out and everyone else followed with a groan, thanking the heavens that they weren't in receivers position. He recovered quickly to see that the Trollhunter had disappeared, but you saw Jim duck around the back side of the troll still limping and holding his side as he followed Draal's back, avoiding his sight.
Blinky cheered, "By Deya's grace, he found it!"
"Found what?" Aaarrrgghh!!! questioned, completely unaware of what Jim was doing.
"His weakness!" you gasped, "He found Draal's blind spot!" You jumped for joy as your mood exponentially increased and Blinky joined you with a hug while laughing.
You watched as Jim continued to use the blind spot to buy some time as he thought about how he was going to finish the fight. A sharp blade came swinging not too far away and Jim glanced at it, getting an idea. Draal was overly frustrated and mocked the boy he was battling against. Jim limped over to where the blade was swinging and grabbed his attention. Jim seemed to know what buttons to press as he held the trolls attention long enough for the blade to swing back out. The troll roared as Jim moved out of the blade's path to knock the brute out of the forge and almost into the lava pits below. Everyone in the stadium gasped at the outcome. Jim saw Draal still hanging on the ledge as he got up and limped towards the hanging troll, the blade still swinging back and forth.
"He did it," you breathed.
Toby was ecstatic about the battle's results as he repeated after you, but he was the only one who had those emotions as you, Blinky, and Aaarrrgghh!!! continue to watch. Blinky put a hand on Toby as he added, "It's not over yet. He has to finish the fight."
You knew what that meant. Heck, it was the topic of conversation between you and Jim the night before, and honestly, you already knew the outcome when Jim won the fight. You just hoped the other trolls would take it well.
To be continued...
