They'll be chasing their tails trying to track us down

"You think I'm going to break your heart?"

"You can never be too sure." She took a few steps closer to him and looked up at him, shoving her hands into the pockets of her overcoat. They both had the same smile on their faces -- the corners of their lips turning upwards the same way. She always smiled with her teeth, something that Jigen found endearing and romantic, no matter how small her smile was.

"You don't trust me?" He questioned again, tipping the brim of his hat up slightly so she could see his eyes.

"Nope." She said simply, biting the inside of her lip to hide a giggle. "I just know you too well."

"I suppose you do."

"You have really pretty eyes." She admitted, dropping her tough girl demeanor momentarily. "I bet you have broken hearts."

"Maybe I have."

"And you never give me a straight answer." She took another step, eliminating the distance between them.

Jigen chewed on his bottom lip and shrugged, maintaining eye contact with her. "The truth would scare you."

"You are so full of shit," She laughed in disbelief, leaning her weight on her back foot. "What do I have to be afraid of?"

"What if I were to hurt you?" He knew he never would, but nonetheless he wanted to gauge her reaction. A gust of wind blew on the city street, causing her to shiver and bury her chin into her scarf. Jigen sighed softly and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into his body. She mumbled a thanks, burying her face into his dress shirt.

"You just answered your own question." She said, grateful for the brief respite from the outside world. "You never would. You care too much about me." She looked up at him and snaked her hands along his waist, beneath his suit jacket. "Do you think I'm going to hurt you, Jigen?"

"You can never be too sure," he quoted her from earlier, looking down at her adoringly. "I'd hope you wouldn't. You seem like a sweet girl."

"You know me." She laughed quietly, leaning her cheek into his chest, "You know I never could."

"Even just looking at me puts a target on your back, darling." He warned, raising his eyebrow.

"I'll take that chance."

"I don't know if I want you too." He loosened his arms from her body only to wrap her up tight again. He couldn't bring himself to let her go, and he thought he was selfish for that.

"We don't know that'll happen." She took another step into him, spreading her hand out on his chest. "Besides, I know you'll protect me. You wouldn't let anything happen to me."

"It's happened before," he said, running his fingers through her hair.

"Is that what's supposed to scare me?"

Jigen looked down at her solemnly and nodded, speechless.

She pursed her lips together and breathed out silently. He felt her breath tickle his chin, and he smiled. All the contact between them felt intimate and he warmed up to the idea of loving her forever. "We can out smart them." She said as she put her chin on his chest, pointing up towards his face.

"I know places we can hide." He mused, stroking her cheek with his thumb. "They'll hunt us like foxes, though."

"If they do, we'll run." She smiled and leaned against his frame, "it's nothing you're not used to."

Jigen chuckled, shrugging his shoulders, "I suppose you're right. I'd rather just keep you safe, though, darling. And not put you in this position to begin with."

"What position? There's nothing wrong with this." She smiled, shifting so both of her hands were pressed to his chest and she was looking up at him. "I know you'll keep me safe, Jigen."

"You have a lot of faith in me, little girl."

"Rightfully so. You haven't let me down yet," she stood up on her tiptoes and kissed his lips softly. It wasn't the first time, but it happened infrequently enough to send shivers down his spine. He wondered if it would always feel this way, kissing her, and he concluded that it would, no matter how often they'd grow to do it.

He held her by her back, moving his lips against her to gently deepen the kiss. The corners of his lips turned up into a smile when she pulled away and ran her thumbs along the lapels of his jacket. "And you never will," she said confidently, smiling as she kissed his nose again. "Can you take me home, Jigen? I'm cold."

"Of course, angel," he smiled, guiding her to his car.
