Today, the pogues were at the beach surfing. It was how they spent most of their free time. It was where they felt the freest and happiest. The four of them surfed the waves all afternoon and took a break for lunch. Kie, the mom of the group had packed lunch for herself and the boys. Of course, she had a few beers in there.

After eating, they were going to head back to the Chateau to start a fire, have a few more drinks, and play a game of truth or dare. Who knows, maybe they'd head to a party. But their plans were delayed when JJ challenged Kiara to a surf-off. The two were in a constant battle of who the better surfer was.

"I'll go first" Kie volunteered herself

"No, I'm going first... You know because I'm number one" JJ smirked as she grabbed his board and headed into the water

JJ was up first his friends John B and Pope gave him a pretty high score, one that was tough to beat. He got an 8.5 and a 9. Kiara smirked at the boy and said, "I can do better"

"We'll see about that, princess" JJ teased her as she took off into the water with her board

The thing about JJ and Kiara is that they're best friends, but they have always had a very flirty friendship. JJ was in love with her and the other two boys had a huge crush on her. I mean why wouldn't they? She was super hot, rich, and she hung out with the three pogues.

The three boys watched her get on her board and start surfing. John B and Pope were talking about her form, tricks, and overall performance. JJ watched her and just admired how good she was. He's never seen anyone surf like her before. Something strange happened with the wave. There were people screaming and the boys watched Kie look behind her as she wiped out. Everyone was suddenly bolting out of the ocean and the three boys became very concerned. Especially, when they couldn't find Kiara.

"SHARK!!!" A guy screamed

That was enough for JJ, he took off running into the ocean where he last saw Kiara. He was the only one running into the water, everyone else was running out. He saw Kie's head pop up and red blood surrounding her. She was screaming and crying for help.

"J" She said and JJ was able to see massive amounts of blood leaving her lower body

JJ swam back to shore with Kie in his arms. Someone on the beach had already called 911 and the sirens could he heard in the distance. JJ left her board on the shore and carried her to meet the ambulance. The paramedics got her in immediately and JJ hopped in too as they headed to the hospital. JJ was there to explain what happened while John B and Pope packed their things up and followed them in the Twinkie.

Kiara was rushed into emergency surgery while the pogues were all in the waiting room. JJ was covered in Kiara's blood, but he didn't seem to mind.

"Someone should call her parents" John B said and the three boys just looked at each other knowing this was going to be a hard call, especially because her parents already hated them

"I got it.." JJ said grabbing Kie's phone and calling her mom

"Hi honey" Her mom answered the phone

"Hi, Mrs. Carrera, this is JJ, uhh I just wanted to let you know that there was an accident at the beach today. We were surfing and Kiara got bit by a shark. We're at the hospital now and she's in surgery"

Her parents rushed down to the hospital and when they arrived, a nurse updated them on their daughters condition. The three pogues kept their distance, but still waited in the waiting room to make sure their best friend was okay.

"You guys need to leave" Mike said walking over to the boys from the cut

"We just want to make sure she's okay" John B said

"It isn't necessary. We are here now, besides it's your fault she's even in the hospital" Anna yelled at the pogues

"We'll leave, give Kiara our best" Pope said getting up and John B followed

The two looked back at JJ still in the chair. His swim trunks were still covered in her blood. He wasn't moving from the chair. His heart was racing, his anxiety was at a high. The two pogues left him in the chair knowing he didn't want to talk to anyone.

The Carrera's sat across from JJ, not speaking to him. He couldn't bring himself to even look at them because he felt this whole situation was his fault. They were going to leave the beach, but he wanted to do a surf-off. She was going to go first but he had to be a dick and go first. It should be him that was in surgery right now.

John B returned to the hospital with a fresh pair of clothes for JJ to change into and he did. Mike and Anna got called back to the recovery room while JJ anxiously sat in the waiting room. They were back there for almost two hours before they had to leave as visiting hours were ending.

"JJ" Anna said approaching him

"She's okay, thank you for saving her"

"I didn't save her"

"You ran into the water when everyone else was running out. She was bleeding, making her a shark magnet and she was completely defenseless. You risked your own life to save hers" Anna said hugging JJ

JJ wasn't much of a hugger, but he hugged Kiara's mom back. It was a quick hug, her way of thanking the pogue for saving her daughter.

"How is she?" JJ asked nervously

"She's in room 1275 asking for you" Anna said

JJ went back to the room Kiara was in and she was super sleeping from the surgery. She smiled as JJ entered the room.

"How are you?" He asked

"I'm okay, it could have been much worse. Thank you for saving me"

JJ bent down and hugged Kiara. He was so grateful that she was alive. The nurse came in and told JJ it was time to leave as visiting hours were over. Kie promised to call him once he was home.

JJ wondered back to the Chateau and updated his friends on Kiara. They were all super worried about her. She was released from the hospital as few days later but wasn't allowed to leave her house, her parents rules.

It had been a week now and Kie went to the Chateau to see her friends. JJ had a hard time looking at Kie the same way. He almost got his best friend, the girl he was in love with killed. A month has gone by and JJ has been acting strange ever since that day.

Kiara noticed and she invited JJ over to her house. Her parents were both working late at the Wreck. She opened the front door and was wearing baggy sweatpants and a t-shirt. She had been living in baggy sweatpants due to her bandages from the bite.

JJ sat on the edge of her bed while Kiara stood. She looked at him and said, "I know you blame yourself, but it's not your fault"

"I suggested the surf-off, I went first... It should have been me" JJ spoke with his voice cracking, trying not to cry

"No, it was totally random. Don't blame yourself. It's not even that bad" Kie said hugging the blonde boy that sat on her bed

"You wanna see?" Kiara asked and JJ was nervous to see the marks the shark left behind

Kiara pulled down the side of her sweatpants and adjusted the waistband of her red thong. JJ could see the marks the shark left behind. Thankfully, there was no obvious bite. The marks were kinda big, but not like he imagined. He reached out to touch them but quickly pulled away the second his hand made contact with her body.

"Shit, sorry"

"It's okay, you can touch them"

JJ's hand touched the scars from the shark and the touch of his warm hands and cold rings gave Kiara goosebumps. JJ removed his hand and stood up as he looked at Kiara.

"I think it goes without saying, but you'll always be the better surfer" JJ smiled

"You're just saying that because I got bit by a shark"

"Guess we'll have to have another competition" JJ teased but noticed Kiara wasn't eager to get back into the ocean

"Whenever you're ready, if you're ready... For now, you hold the best surfer title"

Kie slowly leaned in and pressed her lips to his. He wasn't expecting this, but he kissed her back. He's been dreaming of this moment since they were kids.

"Thank you for saving my life" She said and before JJ could respond, Kiara moved as she ran to her bathroom and came back to JJ and showed him two broken shark teeth

"This is why I needed surgery, the teeth were stuck in my leg"

JJ was shocked by the size of them. Kiara gifted him one of the teeth as he always had an obsession with shark teeth.

"Wanna hang out and watch a movie?" Kie offered

"Sure, I'm thinking jaws" JJ joked which earned a look from Kie

"Sorry, too soon" He said as Kie laughed with him as the curled up in her bed together as they picked out a movie to watch on Netflix

The movie was halfway over when JJ looked at Kie. She looked back at him and he asked, "What was the kiss for?"

"To say thank you and because almost dying puts things into perspective"

"Like what?"

"Like how I'm in love with you and have been for quite some time... Just didn't want to break the no pogue on pogue macking rule or lose our friendship"

"Kiara Carrera in love with me? JJ Maybank?"

"Yes" Kiara smiled at JJ

"Well lucky for you, I've had this tiny small little crush on you for a long time" JJ said which earned a you're totally not serious look from Kie

"Really?" Kie asked sarcastically

"Okay, fine so maybe it's more like a huge, massive, consuming crush on you that started the second I met you"

Kie laughed and said, "Really? You had a crush on me? I had no idea"

Of course, she was being sarcastic as JJ pulled her in for another kiss. He quickly broke the kiss to tell her, "I love you too"

The two watched movie after movie in Kie's bed and when it finally got late enough that the two could barely keep their eyes open, Kie asked JJ stay with her. He's dreamed of this day for so long, he couldn't believe it was happening. He spent the night holding his girl in his arms. He slept so much better knowing that she was safe in his arms.
