*I got suggested a story where each chapter shows how each pogue found out about JJs abuse from his father. While I was writing kiaras chapter, I wrote it in the context of this story. I don't know how long it will take me to finish it so I figured I'd share the Kiara chapter here first. Enjoy the flashback*

It was almost the middle of freshman year. Kiaras kook year. John b and pope had stopped talking to Kie, and she stopped talking to them. The only pogue that still stuck around with her was JJ.

It was a Friday and everyone had just gotten off from school. Kie went up to the wreck to help her dad.

"Kie" she heard a familiar voice say at the counter

"JJ" she smiled "hey"

"Excuse me miss, I'm looking for a place I could grab a bite to eat" JJ said sarcastically "you know of any place good?"

"Ahh well, that table back there to your left, has excellent food. The ratings are outstanding" Kie played along

He smiled and started walking toward the table

"Daaad, I'm taking my break early" she hollered back in the kitchen as she took off her apron. She grabbed some food from the back and came over to sit with jj.

"Ahh, I can always count on you for free food" JJ smiled as she sat down

"Glad I can be of service JJ" she chuckled as they opened the to-go boxes and started snacking

"So how's the kook academy?" JJ asked "still hell?"

"It.. really never gets better" Kie sighed "I just don't get why my parents won't let me transfer"

"Cuz your parents are ass hole" JJ said, looking at her dad behind the counter

"They just want me to live a picture perfect life" Kie complained "it's so boring. Everyone is so shallow"

"Well, if it makes you feel any better, we miss you" JJ said, sitting against the wall and laying his legs on the booth "even pope and John b, they just don't know how to talk to you"

"They hate me" Kie sighed

"They don't hate you" JJ cut in "they just don't understand"

"And you do?" Kie asked with a smile

He looked over at her

"Yeah" he smirked and tried to ignore the feelings "look, they'll come around eventually. I promise"

Kie took a deep breath and smiled. Then Her eyes slowly drifted down to his hand.

"Did you get into another fight?!" Kie asked, alarmed

"What?" He asked

"Your hand" she said, pointing

"Oh, yea" JJ said, looking at his bruised knuckles "I guess"

"JJ how does this keep happening" Kie said, she reached across the table and grabbed his hand to observe it "how many people do you have to punch"

"It's really nothing. Some people just deserve it" JJ shrugged

"JJ" Kie tilted her head "look, I'm not there anymore to make sure you stay out of trouble. Promise me you'll stop getting into fights"

"Kie-" JJ tried to brush off

"Promise me." Kie said Again

He sighed

"I promise" he rolled his eyes

"Thank you" she said blissfully. "Now sit up, my dads coming he's gonna yell at you"

He didn't move, instead he just looked up at her dad with a cocky smile and made himself more comfortable in the booth

"Kiara, your break wasn't for another hour, what are you doing?" He asked, occasionally glancing over at JJ who was still eating fries, completely unbothered

"I told you I was taking it early" Kie replied

"No you didn't" Mike said

"Yes I did, literally I yelled it into the kitchen" Kie argued

"Yeeeah, she definitely told you, bud" JJ added

Mike quickly turned his attention toward the punk kid in his booth.

"Get your feet off my seat" Mike said, pushing them off but JJ just chuckled a little

"Why does it matter?" Kie asked

"It doesn't, what matters is that you tell me that your leaving" Mike started to explain

"Bro, she already said that she told you" JJ said. His intentions were to be disrespectful.

"I'm not your bro" Mike said "now get out of my restaurant you little prick"

JJ laughed and started to get up

"Dad, seriously?" Kie said, disappointed

"Yes seriously, he does this every time" Mike said sternly "you need to get back to work, and he can't be left unsupervised"

"Thanks for the food mr C" JJ said, patting mikes shoulder

"Mhm" Mike said, annoyed "get outta here JJ"

"See y'a later Kie" JJ Said as he grabbed the to-go box and headed for the door

"Kiara, why can't you bring over any friends from your school" Mike asked

"Because everyone there sucks" kie complained "he's the only friend I have right now. Everyone else literally hates me"

"That's not true" Mike shook his head "no one hates you"

"John b and pope won't talk to me, and literally everyone at the kook academy as nothing in common with me"

"Can you just try baby" Mike said softly "you know that boys only here for free food"

Kie chuckled

"He's got a lot going on right now dad, cut him some slack" Kie said as she picked up her food and started back for the kitchen

"Like what" Mike scoffed as he followed her

"Well.. I don't know exactly, he won't tell me, but. He's been getting into a lot of fights lately so I'm assuming that-"

"See exactly Kiara, why do you want to hang out with someone who's always getting in fights. It's dangerous" Mike said as they both put on there aprons again

"He's not dangerous, dad" Kie laughed as she tied her hair back

"Just- all I ask is that you get better friends." Mike said before she left "just try"

"That's asking a lot dad" Kie said and then went back to helping customers

That day, JJ went back to his house. He was only 14 at the time and wasn't able to fight back good enough to really stand up to his dad.

When he got home, his dad was already mad about a deal that had been called off. He saw JJ and the first thing he did was take all his anger out on him.

He tried to fight back which only made it worse.

Later that night he left and went to the chateau. Everyone was there like they had planned and were all sitting around the fire and drinking beers.

He knew his face was still messed up from earlier so he went out to the dock to think of an excuse. He was so tired of making up excuses for his dad. He'd been doing it his whole life. Always covering for him.

He sat out on the dock for a while just thinking. He thought about how broken his family was, and how all of his friends were his real family. But then he realized that he was still missing a piece.

He marched down the dock and to the fire pit where John b, pope, and big John were all sitting around.

He sat down on the cooler and waited for minute

"Are you guys really still mad at Kie" he asked and everyone looked up at him

"What do you mean?" Pope asked

"You do realize that she literally hates it there, right?" JJ scolded

"JJ, if she wanted to talk to us, she would talk to us" John b added "she doesn't care about us anymore"

"Bullshit" JJ said "she thinks that you all hate her. She's just scared to talk to y'all"

"Why are you coming to her defense all the sudden?" Pope asked, getting defensive

"Because, pope." JJ started "this is stupid. Kie is our friend and she should be here right now"

"What happened to your face JJ" big John asked even though he probably already knew

JJ scoffed and ignored his question

"All I'm sayin, is It doesn't feel right to leave her out of our group over something so stupid" JJ said, calmer this time "she's still one of us and I'm sick of our friend group being broken"

"It's not broken" pope added

"Have any of you talked to her?" JJ asked "like even looked in her direction since she transferred?"

Pope and John b looked at each other with a guilty face

"See, what happened to us man" JJ said "if Kies out, then I'm out. It's all of us, or it's nothing. I'm not doing this anymore. Talk to her. " JJ said and got up to leave

"You think he's right?" John b asked pope once JJ left "have we been like... really shitty friends?"

"You know, I never did understand why y'all stopped being friends" big John added as he took another sip of beer

pope sighed

"I do miss her" pope admitted

A week after that, big john went missing. Kie hasn't talked to any of the pogues since JJ at the wreck, so she didn't even know about it yet.

This is when she became friends with Sarah. She started going over to her house all the time. Her life was finally starting to get better, so she wasn't as upset about the pogues not talking to her anymore.

After storming off that night at the fire, JJ had no other choice but to come back after hearing about big John. He had to be there for his best friend. Besides, big john was the closest thing JJ had to a good father figure, so he was hurting as well.

Two weeks after big john went missing, JJ went back down to the wreck to see Kie Again. He knew he had to tell her.

He walked in and went up to the counter, but wasn't his normal silly self

"JJ, heyyy" Kie said happily "I haven't seen you in forever what's up"

"Yeah.. sorry" he chuckled nervously "uhm, something kinda happened... can we talk?"

"Is everything okay?" Kie asked, growing concerned

"Yea just, I wanna talk" JJ said

She clocked out and took JJ outside and down to the beach so they could talk.

"So how are things with you?" JJ asked first

"Actually.. a lot better" Kie smiled "I'm actually friends with Sarah Cameron now"

"Sarah Cameron?" JJ asked, surprised "the kookiest kook of them all" he teased

"Yeah" she chuckled "but she's actually really cool"

"Well that's good" he smiled, but it quickly faded when he remembered what he was about to have to tell her. "So, uhm. Kie there's something that I have to tell you"

"What is it?" Kie asked, innocently

"Well.. there's no good way to really say this.. but" he started "big John's missing"

"Missing?" Kie asked, confused

"He took the boat out and hasn't came back for two weeks." JJ said, hating the sad look in her eyes "they've been looking for him for a while now but, they think he..."

"You think he's dead?" Kie asked, putting her hand on her collar bone

"I dunno" JJ said as he looked back out at the water "John b doesn't"

"Is John b okay?" She asked

"Yeah.. no... I don't know" JJ said "he's as okay as he can be i guess"

"Oh my god this is terrible" Kie said, tears forming in her eyes

"Sorry I had to tell you, just thought you should know" JJ said

"No, thank you for telling me" Kie shook her head

"Kie- I think you should come back" JJ said, fidgeting with his tongue in his mouth "we need you right now"

"I-...JJ i dunno" kie said, looking out at the water "I don't know if it's really the best time"

"I think it would be good for him to hear from you" JJ said "he's going through a lot. He needs his friends"

"Yeah.." she thought "maybe"

He sighed and they sat in silence for a moment.

"Well" JJ started as he stood up "I'll let you know if they find anything"

"Okay" Kie nodded and he helped her up "I'll... try to talk to him"

"Yeah" he smiled "I'm glad schools getting better though"

She smiled and then pulled the boy into a hug.

"Tell me if you ever need anything" Kie mumbled into his shoulder "okay?"

"Okay" he smiled

They walked back up the beach, and after saying goodbye, JJ headed back to the chateau. He was really overwhelmed trying to be there for everyone all the time. But he knew he needed to be.

Another week flew by and JJ went back home. He knew he would be in trouble since he was gone for almost three days straight at the chateau with John b.

He tried to explain to his dad the situation, but like always, his dad didn't even listen to him. They got Into another fight and JJ locked himself in his room until the next morning.

He woke up to his dad being passed out on the couch like normal. He left to go check on John b at the chateau.

Him, pope, and John b decided to go to the beach and check out a new surf shop that just opened.

While walking on the boardwalk they saw Kie and Sarah on the beach. They were laughing and having fun while playing volleyball.

Pope scoffed and John b gave her a dirty look

"And you said you told her, right?" John b asked JJ as his eyes were fixated on Kie

"John b" JJ tilted his head

"She doesn't even care" John b mumbled "my father is actually missing at sea and she doesn't even care"

JJ looked over at pope for help but pope was mad too.

"Cmon, just keep walking" JJ said through a sigh

John b scoffed and they kept walking to the surf shop.

Later that night, JJ took the HMS pogue and drove it to Kies dock. He texted her and told her he was coming, so she met him out there.

"hey" Kie said as he tied the boat off and stepped onto the dock

"Hey" he smiled

"Again JJ?" She said, tilting her head

"What?" He asked and then she touched his busted lip, making him flinch a little at the pain

"Sorry" Kie said, examining his face "who'd you fight this time"

"Some guy" JJ brushed off

Kie shook her head, a little disappointed.

"What's going on?" Kie asked

"Kie, i need to talk to you" JJ said and made his way over to a bench and sat down.

"Okay.. what's up?" She asked and sat down next to him

"We need you Kie" JJ said "John b and pope saw you at the beach today and they think that you don't care"

"I do care" kie defended herself

"I know you do, but they don't" JJ said "you need to talk to him"

She looked down

"I'm serious" JJ said "he needs all of us right now"

"JJ I really don't think I can talk to him right now" Kie said, looking down "I'd have no clue what to say"

"Look. Kie, our friend group isn't the same without you there. It's falling apart and we need you. I need you" JJ said "everything's just been changing lately and I'm so tired of it"

"I don't know how to talk to them, JJ" Kie said

"Just ask him how he's doing." JJ suggested "he just needs to know that you still care"

"I guess" Kie sighed

"Kie.. you guys are all I have." JJ admitted "I don't want us to fall apart"

"Okay" she smiled softly

"Thank you" he said, reliefed

"but Sarah's birthday is tomorrow, I can't miss that. Do you think it can wait" Kie asked

"Yea of course" JJ smiled "you go party with... Sarah Cameron" he said, still shocked that they were friends

"Yeah" she chuckled "thanks for coming here JJ"

He smiled

"Your eye" she touched his bruised eye and examined it "I thought you promised no more dumb fights"

"Well.." JJ Saïd and then paused to think

She focused on him

"Actually Kie" JJ said, his voice sounding nervous. Uh- it's actually not.. just some guy"

"What do you mean?" Kie asked, concerned

He took a deep breath as he debated whether or not to tell her

"Who was it?" She asked

"Uhm" he said getting more and more nervous

She tilted her head, waiting for him to go one

"Can I tell you something?" He turned and looked at her. She could see the panic in his eyes. "And you have to promise you won't tell anyone"

"I promise" she said softly

"It's actually uh" he said, scratching his neck "it's actually my dad" he looked over at her and his tongue felt his busted lip

Her face grew extremely concerned

"W- what do you mean it's your dad?" She asked, sitting up. "He hits you?" She asked almost in a whisper

"Uhm.. Yeeah" JJ said, looking out at the water

"Are you serious?!" She asked

He nodded

"So all those fights you got in..." Kie started "it was really your dad"

"Most" JJ said as he looked back at her

"Have you.. told anyone?" Kie asked

"No. Only John b and pope know" JJ said "look, you can't tell anyone."

"But-"

"Kie I'm serious. You don't tell a soul" JJ said "it's been happening ever since I can Remember, it's really not a big deal. I'm just tired of lying to you"

"Why havnt you told anyone, JJ, they can help you"

JJ shrugged and stood up

"He's a piece of shit but he's still my dad y'a know" JJ shrugged "I don't want him to get locked up"

"So what?" Kie said, standing up and following him "your just gonna keep getting hit until you move out?"

"It's not like he does it all the time Kie" JJ said "just when he gets mad"

Kie looked at him with pain in her eyes for a minute

"I don't want you to get hurt" she said and wrapped her arms around him.

He hesitantly hugged her back and took a deep breath in her arms.

"I'm okay" he said, melting in her embrace "I promise"

"Has it really been happening your whole life" she looked up at him with tears in her eyes

"Stop crying" he chuckled "it's okay. And- that's not the reason I came here so we really don't have to talk about it. I dunno, I just thought you should know."

They got out of the hug and JJ looked at her. She was still sad.

"Look I was fine before and I'm fine now" JJ said "you really don't have to worry"

"KIARA" they hear a voice form her house yell

"Oh god" JJ laughed

"WHOS OUT THERE?" Her dad yelled out "COME INSIDE"

"GIVE ME A SEC" she yelled back

"Jesus what is this guys problem" JJ teased "bros gonna burst an aneurism if he keeps yelling like that"

Kie laughed

"He doesn't like my pogue friends very much" Kie sighed

"Really?" JJ asked sarcastically "I thought he loved me"

She chuckled

"Well I gotta go" Kie said "thank you for coming here."

"Of course" he smiled and started going back to the HMS

"And JJ" she added

"Mhm?" He said, looking up at her

"Please... let me know if you need anything" Kie frowned

He nodded and untied the boat

"Thank you for telling me" she smiled and looked back at him one last time

He smiled back and started up the boat

"KIARA" Mike yelled again

"IM COMING" she hollered back and JJ laughed.

He chucked as he cranked up the motor and drove back to the chateau.

Kie went inside and she cried. She cried all night at the thought of him getting abused. Expesially as a young kid. It all made since now. Why he did the things that he did, and act the way he acts.

She was mad at herself for not seeing the signs. She should have known something was up.

She then started thinking about big John missing as well. Everything was changing and coming to light. Life seemed so stressful.

She cried herself to sleep that night. Feeling helpless of everything around her.
