JAWAHIR

We went to my in laws first. It sounds weird saying that. We met Kausar, Ya Kulthum and Ya Maheera with some few relatives at the entrance.

"Zawjatu akh; sister in law!!!" Kausar went ape. Kulthum pulled her off me and hissed a 'behave' at her. She is acting more like Amani everyday.

We were led to Ammiey's living room. Like our house, it's also full of people, children running around, elders discussing and laughing. It's really amazing to know that all these people are here because of you.

After the usual nasiha, I followed Ammiey to her room. She closed the door and asked me to sit down.

"Masha Allah you look beautiful dear." She complimented and I smiled, blushing slightly. "Jawahir I want to ask a favor from you."

"What is it Aunt?"

"I've already told you to call me Ammiey." She readjusted her veil and looked at me. "Jawahir please take care of my Aayan, please. I know this isn't what you wanted, but you accepted qadr and that's remarkable. Aayan he....he's not himself at all, I lost him a few years back." She held my left hand and placed it on her laps. "Please bring my son back to me. I know you can.

He has been through a lot. I'm not at all saying this for you to pity him—he hates it. I know Aayan and he'll definitely anger and frustrate you but please be patient with him Min fadlik."

"In sha Allah Ammiey." I don't know what happened nor I'm I interested in knowing. But I promise to do what I can.

She ambulated into her walk in closet. She came came back with a small box in her hand. She placed the box in my hands. "This belonged to my mother and I promised to pass it down to my daughter in law."

I opened it, and a simple rose golden ring with a stone in the middle and small stones peppered across, lies in the box.

I picked it and slipped the ring onto my right ring finger. And it fits perfectly.

"Shukran Ammiey." She hugged me. "You're welcome habibty. May God bless you abundantly."

"Ameen."

We went outside to the backyard, where the walima will be conducted. I sat in the middle of my sisters in law, my new family. A female scholar did the wa'azi. Where she talked about marriage in Islam, how the prophet (SAW) and his sahabis lived their marriage lives and so on.

************

After that I was conveyed to my house, my house. When we arrived, Ya Nana and Ya Farha helped me alight the car because I'm wearing an alkyabba so I can't see anything.

"Watch your steps." They warned.

"Wow!!!" I heard Nabila and Amani breath out. "Your house is bomb!!"

I'm itching to take a look but I can't. I guess I'll have to see the house tomorrow or the day after, or......well all the time since this is where I'll be living, away, from home.

They made me sit on a something soft. It's probably a bed. When did we reach to a room? Suhayla removed the alkyabba and placed a huge veil on me instead. I shifted my gaze from the bed to look around the room.

I love it!! Not too boring, not extravagant. Just right.

Two doors side by side to the far end of the room, I concluded to be the bathroom and walk-in closet.

"Jahara touch her makeup a bit so that we'll get going."

"Going kuma Ya Farha? Already?"

"Toh you want him to come meet us here ne?" Ya Nana answered instead.

"B-bu-but you guys can't leave already." I bleated.

"Oh Wahir! Tsk tsk we have to leave. We don't want your hubby to think we don't want him to spend time with his wife. Cuz I know he's very eager." One of my many cousins, Amrah said. She's Aunty Amina's(Abu's younger sister) only daughter. Idk why she calls me that? Something about her having a special nickname for me. Yeah we're that close. Growing up she's the only cousin that's also a friend, well it's still the same.

I remember when ever there is a family gathering, she's the only person I'll stick with apart from my sisters. And yeah, they don't know this is an arranged marriage, nobody does—apart from my family and Hajiya. Well her daughters will surely know which means Hanifa and Karima will know.

Speaking of them, I haven't seen either of them since the wedding began and I don't wanna see them to be honest.

"Yes Jaw. We don't want to keep poor Aayan waiting." Basma, Aunt Badia's (Mammie's half sister) daughter added with a wink.

"Lemme do my job here abeg." After Jahara finished applying makeup on me. It was time for them to finally leave. After another round of emotional goodbye they left except my sisters in law. They'll wait for Aayan to arrive before leaving.

"Jawahir there's food stored in the fridge, all you have to do is warm it up." Kulthum versed as she took a seat beside me on the bed.

"I know Ammiey must have told you this but please Jaw take care of our brother. He most definitely will be a handful but I know you're matured and sensible enough to try and understand him. Now I'm not saying everything he does should be brushed off or overlooked, all I'm saying is try and understand him."

"Please Jawjaw. He's living in a past that still haunts him, try and bring back our Akhi to us." Maheera also said.

I don't know what to say, to be honest. Now they making me a bit anxious, let just hope it's not as bad as I think. Whatever it is that happened.

"Don't feel pressurized in any way." Kulthum added with a little smile on her face.

"He's here!" Kausar came in screaming. She stood by the door, blocking it in a way that you can't pass through with her arms akimbo.

"Kausar lemme pass." I heard his heavy unusual accent.

"No sai ka kawo kudi; until you give me money. I heard and read that usually when a groom comes home after the nikah the bride's friends won't allow him to enter until he gives them some cash, so since I'm the only friend here you'll have to pay. Yallah pay up." Kausar and her obsession with the Hausa culture. She wasn't kidding when she said she'll learn.

After a couple of seconds of silence, she squealed. I'll take it as he has given her. She came in grinning like she won the lottery.

"...Amani will be so proud." See I told y'all. "Common al akhawat let's get going and leave the newlyweds alone." She's acting as if she doesn't know under the circumstances we got married.

"Maas salam zawjatu akhi; goodbye sister in law. You'll see me tomorrow eh, so try not to miss me too much."

I laughed. "Bye guys. My regards to Amal." I haven't seen that munchkin.

And I'm all alone—in this huge house—with my husband. Ya Allah!!

He came back a few minutes later. Dressed in a brown shadda with babban Riga that compliments his skin tone. His sideburns and beard trimmed to perfection and a cap nestled between his soft looking, curly locks. All in all he looks amazing that's for sure. May God protect him from women's prying eyes. What? He is my husband after all. How many times have I used the word 'husband'?

"Freshen up so we can pray." Is all he said before walking out. Ookay

I walked into the closet. My clothes, bags and everything -both mine and the readymade ones from the kayan lefe were arranged properly. The closet is big enough to be someone's room, I swear. After getting my pjs and hijab I went to the bathroom.

I took a quick shower before changing into my pjs then performed wudhu. I put the hijab on before waltzing out to see Aayan already there on his phone. He's now dressed in a plain white jallabiya. He stood up when he noticed me, and the jallabiya stopped a few inches above his ankles.

He laid the praying mats with one slightly behind the other. We prayed and Masha Allah his qira'a is superb. All the madh, ghunnah and kalkala in place.

He sat down Indian style on the mat, now facing me.

"Jawahir." He called.

"Naam." I answered.

"We both know under the circumstances we got married. I wouldn't say we were compelled." Well he wasn't, but I kinda was but he doesn't know that. "But this isn't what we really want to be honest. Did you have a boyfriend?"

What the....

I shook my head, vigorously. He nodded and licked his cherry red lips. My eyes following the movement.

Lower your gaze Jawahir!!

What? No! He's my husband, so I have the right to look, in fact I'm the only one that have the privilege.

WTJ! I'm going crazy.

"Are you listening?" His voice brought me back to reality.

"Uhm what did you say?" Real smooth.

"I said since we're matured enough to understand that this isn't a usual marriage, I think...uhm what I'm trying to say is please don't have any expectations from me." Matha? I never had any to begin with.

He must have noticed the confusion on my face. "What I mean is we're just living in the same house and nothing more, don't get me wrong I'll provide anything you'll need and give everything you'll want just not that. Those expectations a wife has about her husband. You understand?"

Ohh that. I didn't know what to say. That caught me off guard. I was expecting this honestly but he was blunt and awfully quick about it. I'm not hurt, not really, but it happened sooner than expected. Cuz let's be realistic, I definitely didn't expect him to welcome with open arms, all smiles and giggles.

"I totally understand what you're trying to say, but at least we won't have to act like total strangers, make an effort to know one another?" I promised his mom and sisters after all.

"Yes, surely. Well I'm glad you understand." He stoop up folding the mat. I quickly collected it from him and he gave me a small tight lipped smile. "Well goodnight. My room is just down the hall."

I nodded. "Tisbah 'ala khayran."

After he left I switched off the lights. Because of how knackered I was, I drifted into a slumber immediately my head hit the pillow.
