Ch 13 Part 1: A Parent's Protection
On a night just like any other, a young girl ran back to her house with a gleeful gait. She lived on the top floor of a very expensive apartment complex. Amid the most secure sector of all of Starr Park. She had no mother, nor father, but her guardians were too people she called more than friends. They were family.
Despite the stark differences between the three they never allowed it to get in the way of their love. Now the brown-skinned child ran gladly into the arms of her feminine caretaker. A young woman with skin white as snow and purple hair. She was a superhero by day and a provider at night. She and her robotic companion adopted the child years ago after she repeatedly attempted to join them on their many adventures. It would be safer if she had some formal training.
"Max!" she screamed as she leaped into her arms.
"Woah! Calm down, Meg. You're acting like it's been days." Max nuzzled her nose between the crook in Meg's neck. The two giggled playfully as they embraced for a while under the cover of streetlights.
When they had their fill the two separated and Meg took up Max's larger hand into her own. Max kindly asked, "Did you have fun today?"
"Yeah. Me and Bonnie had lots of fun. I got to help them practice their stunts. And I repaired Stu after he failed. Plus I-"
"Woah Woah. Slow down there, sprocket." Max loved listening to Meg gush about repairs but this was hardly the time. "Why don't you head inside and tell Surge all about it. I'll be up in a minute." Meg quickly rushed away, but not before giving Max a kiss on the cheek.
When she was finally alone Max dropped the giddy guise. She took a slow breath as her nerves started to calm. A hand rested on her wristwatch. She had a sinking feeling that something was wrong. There had been this horrid stench in the park for days now. Missing people, friends revealed to be monsters. Now she was feeling that darkness outside her own home.
Even with her hoodie pulled tight she felt exposed. Like eyes were watching her. Following them. She turned up to the roofs. A sniper perhaps, a stalker? Suddenly a bird flew off into the sky.
A bird. Just a lowly creature observing the world from the view of gods.
No. Something else was out there. Something far more sinister. She knew it was watching. Till the day it makes its move, she'll keep waiting. Waiting for the moment it slips up and she can bring justice to Starr Park.
Just then Meg stuck her head back outside. Max immediately returned to smiling as she asked, "What's taking you so long?"
Max put her hands on her hips, "Now didn't I tell you to go upstairs?"
Meg stuck out her tongue and snickered, "I didn't want you to be alone." Max decided to oblige and follow close behind her ward. She took her hand as they made their way to the elevator. All the while she never truly stopped thinking about the truth.
She'll wait. Wait as long as it takes. Whether it's by her hands or another she'll wait. Until justice can finally be served. But if they ever lay a finger on Meg.
She'll burn this park to the ground.
