Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir Season 2
I was inspired by Manimatsu's reviews of Voltron: Legendary Defender to do a review of an entire season instead of just episode by episode. I was going to review the last half of season 2 but I instead decided to do this. I may however decide to review season 3 episode by episode if anyone wants to see that.
I'm sure most people have seen season 2 but if you haven't here's your spoiler warning! I'm gonna talk about the season in depth so if you don't want spoilers would stop here. But if you're ok let's go.
First let's discuss the season as a whole I definitely liked it better then season 1. The show felt a lot more fleshed out and the characters felt more like actual people then two dimensional drawings in a cartoon. There were also episodes that actually contributed to the story instead of just having a "villain of the day episode" all the time. There was actual plot and I like it. I also liked the lore we got about the miraculouses especially the episode that showed all the kwamis in the miracle box. Also finding out that miraculouses can have more powers then the ones we see the heroes use is fascinating. My favorite thing though by far in the season was Chloe's redemption arc, or at least the start of it. The writers did a great job showing why Chloe is the way she is and how that affects her as a person.
Now let's discuss the flaws this season had. And no I'm not hating I'm just trying to point out where this season could improve. First as much as I liked that there were episodes with plot those episodes were few and far between. Also the plot we did get was never or almost never brought up again. Ladybug trying to figure out why Gabriel Agreste had the miraculous book and possibly finding out if he's Hawkmoth? Only in episode one. Luka and Kagami being possible love rivals? Only their premiere episodes and Frozer. Master Fu being the last guardian of the miraculous box and apparently there's an entire school to train guardians like him? Just episode one. Adrien's mom being in a safe underneath the Agreste house? Brought up a few times but we don't know if she's dead or in a coma. Chloe's mom possibly being out of her life and the reason she's such a brat? Brought up twice before her mother actually comes on the show. Then she never shows up again. You see what I'm getting at?
Now let's talk about the characters. I mentioned that I loved that they were three dimensional and actually got some development. Well let me emphasize that whatever development they received went away by the next episode. For example in the episode Zombizou Chloe seemed like she was finally seeing the error of her ways and that she shouldn't insult her classmates. But by the next episode she's as catty and vindictive as ever. Also when her mom showed up Chloe even showed a more vulnerable side to herself when she sadly admitted that she had no friends and she hated that. However next episode she's back to bossing them around. I feel the characters that got this the worse though was our heroes themselves. More specifically Cat Noir. Poor Kitty I really thought he was getting some character development. He was finally realizing that he couldn't force Ladybug to love him. But then next episode he would be throwing himself at her again trying to get her to date him. He even admits to Ladybug that he thinks she's a great friend and is fine with her friendship only to admit to Kagami (as Adrien of course) toward the end of the season that his heart only belongs to the girl he loves (Ladybug).
And that brings me to the thing that rubbed me the wrong way the most with this season. The shipping. This season made my love for LoveSquare diminish greatly because I felt like the creators were shoving in into the show just to make the fans happy. I honestly loved the scene in Frozer where Marinette admitted to Alya and her friends that she felt that Adrien only saw her as a good friend and rather then ruin that by being his girlfriend she decided to pursue her feelings for Luka. Which she does. However during the episode's ending she gives up a walk home from Luka in favor of once again chasing after Adrien to tell him how she feels. I honestly wouldn't care if Marinette and Luka got together even if it was only for a little bit but LoveSquare doesn't need to be this forced. Now let's talk about LGBT shipping. There were two big ships that were LGBT this season, that being JuleRose and Marcthaniel. However instead of us getting the confirmation that they are a couple all we get is a few instances of hand holding and an off screen kiss from Juleka and Rose and loving gazes from Nathaniel and Marc. If you're gonna put a gay/lesbian couple in a show I would rather you just do it, provided it's done without it being forced, then just heavily implying it. The creator even flat stated Marc has a crush on Nathaniel yet aside from his debut episode he's never spoken to Nath since. They just always sit together and smile at each other. What is it with Netflix shows and promising gay couples only to get them pushed to the side? Whatever. Nathaniel was also heavily forgotten this season, heck he even disappear halfway through Zombizou.
To end this review I will state one more positive thing. My favorite character from this season. That would be Ivan. Ivan is already a character I liked a lot (I love the "gentle giant" characters) but this season he really grew on me. He was so protective over Mylene and their relationship is so pure and I love it. Ivan also would just say these one liners that cracked me up. For example Andre the ice cream maker was trying to hint that he knew Marinette liked Adrien by making her ice cream that was "yellow like his hair and green like his eyes" and Ivan just said, "blonde hair and green eyes. What guy looks like that?" Or in the first part of Style Queen Chloe tried to convince her class that she had interviewed Ladybug and Ivan spoke up saying "that's you Chloe. You're not even trying to look like Ladybug." He was just funny to me.
Yes I know this review was pretty negative but it's just because I really love this show and I want to see it thrive more then it is. If you've seen season 2 of miraculous (or even if you've only seen a little) let me know your thoughts.
