My normal life disappears

I looked down at my plate with a single piece of bread on; there was nothing on it though. Then, I looked at the butter knife. I stretched my right hand towards the butter knife. I took some butter with the butter knife and prepared to spread the butter on my piece of bread.

CLANK!!

I winced at the shrill noise that came from the butter knife falling against the plate. I tried to pick up the butter knife from the plate to continue to spread the butter on the piece of bread, but when the hand came in contact, or should I say not in contact, with the knife, my hand went through it, the table too. Again!

I looked towards my hand, expecting to see my normal skin-colour, but instead my hand was some glowing, semi-transparent blue colour. I took up the knife with my left hand. That worked.

I moved my right hand towards the butter knife, I watched with wonder as my hand passed right through it. 'This is so unnatural. What is this? How am I able to do this? Maybe what happened this night wasn't a dream. Maybe it was real'

"Good morning Jenna, how are you today?"

"Argh!" Another loud clang was heard again. Lost in my thoughts, I failed to notice that Vlad came in, which led to me, in my shock, dropping the knife and me hitting my hands onto the table. "Ouch! Good. Good morning" I looked down at my hands again. They looked completely normal, so I began to massage my hands. "I'm feeling pretty good today, you just scared me, that's all. How are you today?" I stopped massaging my hands and looked up at Vlad.

"I am just fine thanks" He answered, but he looked like he was going to say something else, but before he even got the chance to do so, I spoke up.

"By the way, have you eaten breakfast yet? I've been here for quite a while, but I didn't see you come here" I asked him confusedly.

"Yes Jenna, I have eaten breakfast today. I was actually waiting for you in the dining room about an hour ago" He deadpanned. "But then I realised you must've found some food somewhere else, because when I went to check on you in the library, you weren't there. I also went to your room before, just to see if you were there"

"Oh. Well, didn't you say that you had a theory as to why all this weird stuff is happening to me. Do you think you could tell me your theory now?" I asked hopefully.

"Of course Jenna, but first, maybe we should go downstairs into the lab again" He said with a half-smile. At my confused look, he added. "You know, the lab where the ghost portal is"

"I'm sorry, but I really, really cannot remember any portal" I said, searching my brain for any kind of information about that, but I found none. "And by the way, why do we have to go downstairs? Can't we just stay up here?" I looked up at him with a raised eyebrow. That brought up a memory, or at least some information that I've might be able to use. 'Was there a portal? Huh, I didn't expect that' That got me thinking. "Wait! So, there was really a portal? I thought that was all just a dream!" My voice went a little bit high pitched at the end (stupid voice).

"No Jenna, the portal wasn't just a dream" He said slowly, but then he smiled a little bit. "But thanks to you, the portal is now functioning properly. Why we need to go downstairs into the lab again, that is because, if my theory is right then we'll probably be down there more often than anywhere else in this house" He said all that looking, and sounding, really confident. All that confidence made me trust him a little bit more, like going from 0,2 to 1.

If there is one thing that I've learned from travelling for six years, that is that you cannot completely trust anybody without really getting to know them. I know that I pretty much just walked right into a stranger's house, without even knowing that stranger, but I knew that I'd (probably) come out of it unscathed.

"Alright then. How, err, how will we get to this lab of yours?" I said a little bit nervous. "I err, don't exactly remember. Heh, heh"

"Come on now then Jenna, follow me" He said, walking past me with a smug smirk. I got a little bit confused about that smile, but I brushed it off as nothing, and followed him through the house.

When we reached the library, Vlad continued straight forward towards a fireplace I hadn't noticed before. I think. There were two small golden statues on top of the fireplace, he went to the right one and pulled it towards him. A big painting of himself slid to the side, and revealed some stairs going down.

I got a sudden headache. A picture flew through my mind, a memory. I remembered Vlad doing the same thing before, going up to the same statuette and pulling it, I remembered the painting sliding to the side. But, just as soon as the picture came, it disappeared and I was left there confused.

"Are you alright Jenna?" Vlad asked me, to which I nodded. "I had begun to walk downstairs, when I noticed you weren't following me, so I came back upstairs. Are you sure you're alright?"

"Yes!" I exclaimed. "Of course, I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?" I looked at him curiously. "I just spaced out for a while. Nothing's wrong"

"Alright, Jenna I was just making sure" He said nicely. He then continued in an overly happy voice. "Come on now then Jenna! Let's go downstairs so that I can tell you my theory!"

"Okay..." I narrowed my eyes at him. "Let's go"

When we had reached the lab, I got a feeling of déjà vu. I felt like I had been there before, the lab was still lit up in a dim purple colour, there were a lot of things in the lab, but the most notable thing in there was probably a pentagonal frame with something looking like green liquid floating inside. 'What was it called now again? Ghost-plasm? Never mind, let's find out this theory of Vlad's'

"So..." I began. "Will you finally tell me your theory?" I looked up at Vlad excitedly.

"Yes" He said. "My theory of what's happened is that you've become half ghost. A Halfa"

"That..." I just stared at him. "That's anticlimactic" 'But what was I expecting? All that building up of mysteries, all of the questions... all that, summed up in one sentence' I continued to stare at him. "Did we really need to come all the way down here for you to tell me that sentence?" I rose an eyebrow.

"That's not the whole reason why we came down here" He said. Then he added. "If I'm right, which I'm sure I am, then this is where we are going to train"

"How exactly are we supposed to train?" I asked. I was really confused. "I mean, the only things I've done is standing inside of a table, dropping a butter knife and flying a few meters! Nothing- That's nothing weird, right?" I asked him a bit madly. "Right?!"

"No Jenna, it's completely weird" He told me the cold hard truth. "But you've just began developing your powers, you can't even control them, but with my help and guidance, you could become more powerful than you've ever imagined!" He offered me with another creepy smirk.

Despite his creepy smirk, I was considering his offer. 'He's probably the only one who could help me, right? The only one I know at least. Well, I guess I could just leave, but then what? I might not find anyone else that could help me with my situation' But there was still one thing that was bothering me.

"If I accept, what do you gain by training me?" I looked at him with narrowed eyes. "You don't exactly strike me as the kind of person that helps people, and get nothing in return. I don't believe that you would offer any other girl the same thing"

"But you're not like any other girl now, are you Jenna? Halfas are really rare, and I'm pretty sure that we are the only halfas existing" Vlad told me sounding sincere.

"So, what would you gain from it? You didn't answer my question" I asked him again. I looked in to his eyes

"I just told you Jenna, we're the only halfas, and I've almost had my powers for 20 years. I feel obliged to help you figure out your powers" I could almost feel his irritation radiating from him. I thought it was hilarious.

"Alright! Yes!" I exclaimed, barely containing my laughter. After 30 seconds, I could finally talk without the risk of me bursting out laughing. "Yeah, sure, yes. I'd be grateful if you'd train me. Because if what you say is true, that we are the only halfas, then I feel like I must train with you. There seems to be no other option" I sighed.

"Good choice, Jenna" Vlad said calmly. "So, let's begin, shall we?"

"Wait, like right now?" I said surprised.

"Yes Jenna, why do you think we came down here for? Sight-seeing?"

"I don't know, I mean no, I mean let's begin?" I said uncertain. "What am I supposed to do?"

"Well, the first thing you need to learn; is how to transform into your ghost half" He told me.

"How exactly am I supposed to do that?" I furrowed my eyebrows and looked up at him in confusion.

"Just concentrate on your core Jenna" He told me, but at my still confused look, he elaborated. "Just try to focus on transforming, try to change your whole appearance"

"Okay, I'll try" I closed my eyes and tried to concentrate on, I don't know, something. 'It looked so easy when Vlad did it, but it's really, really hard' I continued to concentrate on myself and that's when I felt something cold inside of me.
