Chapter 40: Diversion

Kristine's POV

So I just came out from the shower and wore my clothes when the house phone rang like mad. Urgh, why does it always have to be me to pick it up? Mom and dad are at the shop so I can't blame them, but what about Kristen?!

I wrapped my whole head in the towel and ran to the phone. I picked it up in frustration. "Hello?"

"Kristine! You gotta come here, now!" Wait, I recognise that voice... Sabrina!

"What do you mean?"

"It's Shade! Father wants to make the spell on him stronger so that he can't escape! I tried to stop him but it was too late, father took him away! You have to help me!"

"Wait WHAT?! Stronger? HIM? No way! Is the spell stronger already?!"

"No, not yet, that's why I need your help!"

"How can I help? Quickly!"

"You can start by getting over here, duh."

"Oh right, of course! I'll be right over."

I quickly hanged up and simply dried my wet hair. I ran to the bathroom and knocked on it. "Kristen! I'm going out for a while!" I yelled.

"OK!" I heard Kristen's voice from the inside.

I quickly fixed myself but my hair still looked like a horrible mess. I didn't care and dashed out of the house. I grabbed my bicycle and cycled as fast as I could to Sabrina's house. I'm coming!

The minute I reached Sabrina's house, I jumped off my bicycle, even though I haven't hit the brakes yet. I stopped my bicycle with my telekinesis from crashing. Sabrina was waiting at the front door.

"So? So?!" I asked dramatically.

"I don't know what to do!" Sabrina wailed and caught sight of my hair. "Um..." She pointed to my head. "Was I disturbing you just now?"

"Oh, don't worry about it." I assured her. "Now how do you suppose we stop this?! Hurry, bring me wherever they are!"

Sabrina brought me in. Wow, the whole house was just... I don't even know how to describe it. "Kristine, why don't you hide here first? I'll try to interrupt father to buy more time." Sabrina beckoned to the curtain.

"Sure!" I hid behind the curtain.

Sabrina's POV

Time is wasting! I have to get to work quickly! I went to father's room and just opened the door without knocking. I saw father and Shade sitting facing each other.

"Ah! Damn it! Now I will have to start again. What is it Sabrina?!" Father broke his concentration and looked at me.

"Uh..." I was trying to think of an excuse. "Oh, have you seen my... Hair pin?" I blurted out. Wow, what an excuse Sabrina, I mentally scolded myself.

"That's your business! Go find it yourself. In case if you haven't noticed, I am very busy and must not be disturbed!" Father snapped.

"What are you doing?" I tried to buy time.

"Idiot, can't you see what I'm doing?! I'm making sure your stupid brother does not resurface. Now thanks to you, I have to start all over again!" Father shouted.

"Father, I have been asking you to release Shade for years already, not make the spell on him stronger!"

"None of your business! I can do whatever I want! Now, out! OUT!"

Father got up and pushed me out of the room. I heard the lock in his room door. I slapped myself in the face. Kristine poked her head out of the curtain. "Guess that didn't go out too well?" She asked.

"Unfortunately." I sighed. "Now we will never be able to get in there to stop him!"

"Does the room have a window?" Kristine stepped out from her hiding spot.

"Yes, it's at the back." I replied. "Why? Oh wait, I know already."

"I could use my powers to distract him. For instance, I could make some stuff fall down, noise, whatever to break his concentration!" Kristine explained.

"But couldn't you just, bring Shade away from him?" I asked.

"If I were to do that, your father would know there's someone else here, and that someone is me! At least something like books falling down seems very natural." Kristine reasoned.

"Got it. Let's go, quickly!" I ran to the front door and opened it. Kristine and I quietly sneaked around the garden. Well it was actually full of garden weeds. The window was left slightly ajar. Kristine carefully peeked though the window.

"You sure?" I whispered to her.

"Certain." She then took a few steps back. I was confused, how was she going to use her powers if she doesn't see the room? "Reflection." Kristine explained after looking at me confused.

Kristine ducked behind a bush and I did the same thing. CLANG! I heard from the room. I got a shock that I almost let out a scream. "Wonder what that was." I muttered.

"ARGH!" I heard father's voice. "Stupid metal whatever stuff! Why is this even in my room?!"

Kristine giggled softly and gave me a thumbs up sign. I mouthed her 'what's next?'. She grinned and I heard a loud thump. Books would be my guess. "Ouch!" I heard another voice but it wasn't father. It was robot Shade.

"Damn, I really ought to clean this room once in a while." Father said. "Must have hurt huh? That was probably the thickest book that ever landed on your head."

"Shut up and just continue!" Robot Shade's cold voice echoed.

"Well you do know I have to keep starting all over again every time something interrupts!" Father shouted back.

Zling! Crash! "What the heck?!" Father yelled. "We're getting out of this room for some peace and quiet!"

Kristine signalled me to quickly go back into the house. I nodded at her and ran back into the house, trying to look as normal as possible. "Father? What was that? Are you done?" I asked.

"Just some serious spring cleaning required." Father simply replied. "And no, I'm not done yet."

"Then...?" I waited.

"Whatever, let's just go somewhere else." With that, father and Shade walked into Shade's room. I ran back to tell Kristine.

Kristine listened with her full attention. "Tell me, how long is it normally required?" She asked.

"I don't know, 5 to 10 minutes?" I asked back.

"We need backup. I can't keep distracting them forever. We need immediate action. Call Eliza and Elijah, the rest!" Kristine ordered.

"But Kristine, if I call, wouldn't that bring their parents as well?" I asked.

"Don't worry, their parents aren't home right now! Eliza and Elijah said it already! Harold and Henry's parents are constantly out! Jessica and Jenna's are probably working right now!" Kristine replied.

"But, what do I tell?" I asked in doubt.

"Just say Kristine told them to come, on a mission to rescue Shade." Kristine replied. A paper and a pen floated towards her. I saw Kristine writing down some numbers. "Here are the rest phone numbers. Call my brother too! I'll make my way to distract them again."

"But Kristine, will you be all right?" I asked.

"Trust me! Now, go!" Kristine dashed away.

I ran back to the house phone and called. Pick up, pick up!
