Chapter 13: Brace yourselves

Jessica's POV

"Shade." Kristine approached Shade and said.

"Oh good, you're all here, I gotta tell you that later-"

"Quiet!" Kristine cut in. "You can just tell us, are you just pretending to be our friend?"

"What do you mean pretending? You guys are my friends!" Shade exclaimed.

Harold leaned closer to me. "So... What? Do we need to blast him or something if he really is a spy Jess?" He asked.

"Wait first, we'll see the situation." I whispered and looked at Kristine.

"If you really are a friend, then why was Sabrina listening in when you came back with us yesterday? You're just pretending to be our friend when your sister is a spy, isn't it?" Kristine asked.

"Sabrina? She was just bored so she went out for a walk! She didn't listen to anything!" Shade replied. "It just so happened that I wanted to go back at that time. Sabrina wasn't spying on you all!"

"Are you sure?" I asked with a smirk.

"Look, I know it is hard to believe, but honestly Sabrina was not spying on you. No one's spying on you now thanks to me." Shade defended himself.

"Aren't you supposed to spy on us?" Eliza asked. "You were asked to, it's just that you said you didn't want to."

"I was asked to but Pitch grumbled and complained that I was too slow in finding you guys." Shade explained. "I feared that he would give the mission to Sabrina instead but luckily he didn't, however-"

"There's a however?!" Jenna cut in. "And I thought that we were safe for a while."

"Jenna." I gave her a nudge. "Keep quiet."

"Just, continue." Elijah sighed. "Although I can't guarantee I will believe it."

"I gotta agree, this story is getting complicated." Eliza slowly nodded.

Shade looked at us blankly. "If you'll allow me to continue?" He asked. All of us nodded in agreement. "So, if I STILL need to repeat myself, I am not a spy, Sabrina wasn't spying on us. As for that however, Pitch said he himself will take actions. I came to give you another warning today, Pitch, he's laying a trap for you today. Not for all of you, but for Jessica and Jenna. He already knows the way to your house, he has a trap waiting for the both of you."

My heart started to beat really quickly. It was racing. My breathing quicken, I was panicking. A trap? For me and my sister? I never been in a situation like this, why must all this happen?! "How does the trap look like?" I quickly asked. "How can we avoid it? Is there another way back home?!" I turned to Jenna. "What if- What if, what if-"

"Jessica!" Jenna shook me violently. She gave me a comforting hug. "Deep breath sis, deep breath." She ordered. "Don't... Panic..."

"I think you should stop for a minute or two." I heard Harold whisper to Shade.

"Give us some time to calm down." Eliza added. "I can't take all of this either."

"Oh come on, I need to know more!" Kristine protested. "It is a lot to take in but I don't want my friends in danger."

"Kristine, just take a break." Henry sighed.

Jenna forcefully pushed me down to a chair. She softly patted my back. "First time I seen you panic like that." She forced a smile. I rolled my eyes at her.

"Go on Shade, go on." I finally said. "I need to know how we will not be falling into the trap."

"Are you sure?" Shade asked in doubt. I nodded at him. "He's using his special net. It is kinda like a fishing net used by fishermen but black, made from powers, and totally camouflaged because it is on the road. So, just brace yourselves. I do not know where he placed the trap, so I suggest that you need to go a different road."

Kristen raised his hand and said, "But, the trap you're mentioning, I don't know, it's probably like what I see in the cartoon, wouldn't the trap spring up on anyone that walks over it? A car, a person, even an animal! Why don't we just wait for a while before walking back home?"

"Sorry Kristen, but the trap isn't as easy as you think. Remember when I said his special net? Yeah, this particular net he created, Pitch can specifically target someone with the trap, which is..." Shade pointed to me and Jenna.

"Quick, what other roads are there to walk home?" Eliza wondered out loud.

"Uh Eliza, even if there was, we wouldn't know." Elijah said. "Mom and dad only told us this road?"

"I have an idea." Harold's face lit up. "We, call, our parents!"

"Huh? I don't follow?" Kristine asked.

"Think about it, if we call our parents to bring us home, it will reduce the risk of us getting caught!" Harold explained. "You know, we would be in a car?"

"But won't it still activate when we drive over the trap? Because Jessica and Jenna are still inside it?" Henry asked.

"Does this trap activate with cars?" Jenna asked Shade.

"It activates no matter what. If the target is alone walking, on a bicycle, in a car, running like mad, on a scooter, if the targets gets into the trap, it will activate." Shade replied.

"Why in the world is this trap so complicated?!" Kristen shouted.

"What trap?" A voice asked. We turned around, it was Sabrina. Oh dear, I said in my mind. If she heard all that, Shade's cover is gonna blow.

"Sabrina!" Eliza blurted out. "Uh... What a surprise?"

"Yeah, you're coming to join us?" Elijah asked. Eliza glared at him.

"Join? No way, I was just walking around. I just heard the word trap and got a little interested." Sabrina scoffed. "So, what are you guys talking about?"

"Nothing." Harold replied.

"Come on, I just wanna know." Sabrina crossed her arms.

"It was nothing. I was just talking about my computer game. There was this annoying trap in one level that got me always losing. I'm just discussing with my friends on how to get over that level." Kristen quickly said. I stared at him in amazement. That was fast to think of a way out, I'm impressed Kristen.

"Huh, and I thought it was something way more interesting. I won't waste my time no more." Sabrina walked away. "I have someone to find anyway."

I let out a sigh of relief. Henry shook Kristen's hand. "Wow Kristen, just wow."

"That. Was. Amazing! That's my brother!" Kristine squealed.

Elijah clapped his hands. "That's some quick thinking you got there."

Kristen chuckled and said, "I just said the first thing that came to my mind. Computer games was the best excuse out of this."

Shade breathed heavily. "I thought I would get caught, thank goodness I didn't!" He stated. "Thank you so much, Kristen."

"It was nothing." Kristen smiled. "Now, back to the topic?"
