Chapter 56: A trap (2)

Merida's POV

Me and Hiccup ate our lunch and went to the archery field. "You're already a natural at this." I patted his back as I grabbed a bow and arrow.

"All because you were there to help me." Hiccup replied. I could feel myself burning. I hurriedly hid my face and faced a target.

Hiccup stood next to me after grabbing his stuff. I threw a smile at him and shot off my arrows. As usual, all of them hit the target. After about 10 arrows, I spotted a sign. "I'll be back!" I said to Hiccup and walked towards it.

The sign pointed towards horse riding. I took a closer look at it. There was a place where you could ride on a horse and do archery at the same time! Cool! I have got to try this. I ran back to Hiccup. "Hiccup!" I called out. Hiccup let go of his arrow and looked at me. "What?"

"Wanna go horse riding and doing archery at the same time?" I asked excitedly.

"Where?" Hiccup asked with interest.

"There!" I beckoned. Hiccup walked with me to the area. We were given to choose a horse. I looked around and spotted a horse. I stroked it and it neighed loudly. "His name is Angus." The man in charge told me. "One of our fastest horses here."

"I'll take it." I smiled as I patted on the horse. Hiccup darted to me and gave me a boost. I got on Angus' back and positioned myself comfortably. Angus shot off like a bullet. I enjoyed it really much. After a short distance, we came across a couple of targets. I aimed it quickly and let go of my arrow. Right on target.

Hiccup soon caught up with me. "How are you liking it?" I asked.

"It's great! Although I already fell down just now. This horse is fast!" Hiccup giggled.

"Try to catch up with me!" I shouted as Angus ran even faster. Hiccup was soon out of sight and I aimed every arrow I had at the targets. Every one of them hit the target. I love this! Since when did they have this horse riding and archery thing?! I should have noticed this first thing when we got here.

After counting a total of 25 targets, we reached back to where we started. "Can I go again?" I asked excitedly to the man. He nodded and I did a silent cheer. Hiccup and his horse came back. The minute the horse stopped, Hiccup fell down, again.

"How was it?" I giggled.

"Great, if only I didn't fall down so many times." Hiccup said as he brushed off the leaves on him.

"Just balance yourself. So, how many arrows did you get?" I smiled.

"Didn't count. Not many though. The horse was too fast." Hiccup walked towards me.

"Well, I'm going for a second round. Wanna join?" I stated.

"Can I just sit with you?" Hiccup asked.

"I'm sure it won't be a problem. Hop on! Angus is really great." I said.

Hiccup sat behind me and we rode off. "Just get your balance, ok?" I turned to him and faced a target. I aimed at it and let go of the arrow. "Wow!" Hiccup exclaimed. "You're that good huh?"

I smiled and continued to shoot my arrows. After the tenth target, Hiccup fell down. I rolled my eyes and brought Angus to a halt. "You ok?" I burst out laughing.

"Too fast! Too fast!" Hiccup complained.

"Fine, let's go slow." I sighed. Hiccup and I got back up on Angus and I tried to go slowly. The next target is still quite a distance, so going slow shouldn't be much of a problem. I turned around to Hiccup, only to find that he was looking back too.

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" I gave him a nudge.

"That-" I started but both of us continued. "We're being watched?"

"You're thinking about it too?" Hiccup asked, surprised.

"Yeah, I don't know why, but... I think we're being watched somehow." I shrugged.

"I think someone's hiding behind this thick green. I can't really see anyone, but I have that feeling." Hiccup suggested.

"Well this pathway is like a jungle! Someone could easily hide in it." I added.

"Let's just go." Hiccup said. "A little bit faster, but not too fast."

I nodded and Angus went faster. I looked front, left, right, back, everywhere! I strongly believe that someone is watching the both of us. Suddenly, two men, one came out of nowhere from the left and the other came out from the right. They were both wearing masks.

I panicked and let loose of one of my arrows. It hit a palm tree. "Go Angus, go!" I yelled and Angus ran. Angus ran way too fast this time, not even I could get my balance. Me and Hiccup fell off. Angus was already out of sight by the time we got up. The two men reappeared. I was all ready to sprint my way back.

"Who are you?!" Hiccup shouted. He grabbed my arm and placed me behind him. I simply grabbed an arrow on the ground and aimed it at the man. It's either him or us! Are these arrows lethal? Would I kill him if I were to let go of this arrow?

"Do it Mer. Do it." Hiccup said loudly. Although in hesitation, I let go of the arrow. It hit the man right in the heart. Oh man, did I just kill someone?! The man collapsed on the ground. The other man pulled out a dagger and came charging at us. Hiccup grabbed me and ran. "Hurry, get your aim done!" Hiccup shouted as we ran.

I tried to reach for my arrows as one by one of them fell down. I managed to grab one and ran even faster. After a distance, I stopped and quickly aimed the arrow at the man. He fell down and Hiccup went to him. "I don't think he's dead." Hiccup concluded. "The arrows aren't that bad."

I took a few deep breaths, still trying to get a grip in myself." Don't worry, at least you managed to stop them." Hiccup comforted me. "Now let's go and tell what happened."

We ran and ran back. There were just a few steps till we got back but Hiccup was already exhausted." Come on Hic, just a little more." I grabbed him and dragged him.

"You know Merida, I think... What happened there, was a trap for us." Hiccup said.

"I thought of the same thing!" I exclaimed. "All in masks and all, even a dagger!"

"Someone laid a trap for us. I think they were trying to kidnap us, but not for the usual stuff. This was a trap." Hiccup stated.

"A trap, but why? Did we offend someone?" I asked.

"I doubt that. But, this is a-"

"Yeah, yeah, stop saying that okay?! It's a trap and well yeah, that's it. We'll just report that and figure it out later." I cut in.

"Luckily you still had your arrows to save us! He could have killed us back there!" Hiccup stated.

I smiled at him and we finally reached back to where we started. I still wondered why that trap was set for us. How did they know when and where we were? What was their motive of that trap?
