How to Write Smut

Hi y'all, so I'm writing this bc I'm seeing too many damn smut and fanfics have really great plots but crappy smut part so I'm making a guide for anyone who wants to write smut and also for myself cause I'm also gonna write another smut book in the future (idk if anyone wants to read it but I'll let y'all know when it comes out). So yeah.

Also pls keep in mind, I'm not a professional author by any means, I just write for fun and these are all my personal opinions and how I write and what I like to read. Constructive criticism welcome, I'd love to hear what you guys like as well!

1. Use Anotomically Correct Names

I find that this one is pretty standard, language you use in smut really effects the way a reader percieves it and initiates intimacy between the characters.

For example, use words like 'breasts', 'nipples', 'clit',  and 'penis',  instead of 'twin peaks', 'orbs', 'wet honeypot', and 'flesh rod'.

Please, I've literally read these words in smut books and it's such a turn off.

Other names I've found work well for 'penis' are "dick", "length", and "member".

Personally I prefer using these names instead of penis because...actually idk, I just don't like the word penis that much.

Also I've seen a lot of people say they don't like the word 'member'? Is that true, do you guys not like that word? Cause personally I don't mind it but idk, pls let me know.

Also, use 'entrance' as opposed to 'secret entrance' like its not a secret, everyone knows what it is, stop embarassing yourself.

2. Describe the Action and how Characters are Responding

I think this one is really important because it sets a good smut book apart from a great smut book.

Really try to describe what is happening in as much detail as possible. Describe where the charachters are in position with each other, what position they're in, what they're doing, and how they're reacting to each other.

Here, they're a lot of creative freedom and where your charachter's relationship is clearly established.

For example, these are both describing the same action:

He then kissed her. She was backed up against a wall and he picked her up. He touched her  boob and she moaned.

Bland, doesn't describe how the action is affecting the characters. You can picture whats happening but that's about it.

VS.

He kissed her slowly and softly. She closed her eyes as he dominated her, her lips being captured by his and her soft body being pushed harshly against a hard wall. Her heart beat quickly in her chest at how gently he was kissing her but at the same time being so rough with her body. Not breaking the kiss, he pulled her legs up to wrap around his waist. She clung onto him, her arms tangled around his neck. He pulled his lips away from hers and began messily kissing her neck. Her breath became ragged as his wet kissed trailed lower down her chest. His hand, which had been holding her butt for support, snaked up under her clothes. She flinched when he caressed her breast. His fingers found her nipple and she moaned, her body being stimulated by both his lips and his fingers.

A lot more descriptive, let's the reader get a clear sense of what's happening. You can clearly see how the relationship between the charachters is defined.

3. Establish the Relationship between the Characters and Context

This kinda goes in hand with the last one but its a litte harder to describe. You can establish what kind of relationship your charachters have throughout your novel, if that's what you're writing, or it can be done quickly in one shots. Having plot and context is super important in smut.

If your chrachters don't like each other or one of them likes the other one, or even their emotions, then it affects the way they are reacting to sex.

Of course, all your sex should be consented so your characters will end up enjoying it, but it's more of the before and after if that makes sense.

For example, these are all the same action:

Two characters that are mad at each other-

[context before smut scene (I don't wanna write a whole smut rn so I'll leave that to y'll)]

She captured his lips hungrily. He kissed her back with the same amout of force, wrapping his arms around her body and pulling her tightly against him. She clawed at his shirt, trying to rip it off of him, not breaking their kiss. He understood and pulled it off of him before doing the same to her as well. He grabbed her breast harshly and she moaned, her body stinging at the sudden stimulation.

Two characters that are having sex for the first time/ or are shy idk-

[context before smut scene]

She captured his lips softly. He kissed her back shyly, his lips moving gently on hers. He brought her close to his body, her skin pushing against his. She fiddled with the hem of his shirt. They moved apart and looked at each others eyes. She slowly pulled his shirt off of him. He did the same ot her, revealing her soft skin. He gently groped her breast. She moaned, turning her face away at the sudden contact.

Two characters that are in love-

[context before smut scene]

She kissed him, her lips moving naturally on his. He kissed her, holding onto the back of her head to deeepen the kiss. He pulled her close to him, her body flush against his. She pulled on the hem of his shirt and removed it off of him. He smirked, loving how she watched his body. He pulled her shirt off of her as well and she gave a small shriek and he just chuckled. His hand softly squeezed her breast which caused her to gasp at him. Her aroused face turned him on to no ends.

As you can see, all these scanarios are describing the same action but the variation of vocabulary and reactions between characters really sets the mood. I hope this makes sense??

Especially with a novel where the characters may have sex several times, the way you portray their sex should correspond with recent events in the plot.

4. Describe Your Characters

This may not be as crucial when you're writing fanfic smut because the readers usually have a sense of what the character looks like. But especially if you're writing with OC charachters, go into detail about what the charachter looks like and use a lot of adjectives.

For example:

Her soft breasts that fit into her bra nicely.

His chisled jaw that framed his face.

His soft, fluffy hair that was always boyishly messy.

Her eyes were a beautiful shade of pale blue.

Side note, this is totally a personal opinion but please stop using 'orbs' so much. Like maybe once or twice is okay but everytime you describe someone's eyes or breasts...just no.

5. Be Realistic

For the love of god, stop making every woman a size 0 with huge tits and a fat ass and every man a ripped sex god. I mean obviously I know smut is a fantasy and these are not realistic standards by any means but like at least try to make them not too unreal. Like no guy has a dick that 11 inches long and hard 24/7.

Like you can make your charachters attractive without necessarily being unrealistic?? Idk if that makes sense.

And make your sex realistic as well. Women don't become numb from being kissed and men don't get a rock hard boner as soon as they see her. People don't orgasm with just a touch and people don't become mindless as soon as they start having sex. Also sometimes both partners don't always orgasm, especially when doing oral.

Personally I just find these things to be a annoying but idk could be just me.

6. Honorable Mentions

Don't set a time limit on sex- Umm idk it's just wierd when autors say stuff like "They kissed for about 3 minutes and he entered her and they fucked for about 10 minutes and they both came"

Be creative with sexual play- Play around with different kinks, positions, props, acts, etc. I like the regular sex but occationally I find wanting things a bit more spicy.

Try not to have characters speak- This is kinds misleading cause obvioulsy they can speak but I mean like say they moaned instrad of trying to spell it out that they moaned. Like say 'she moaned out lustfully' instead of  'Ahhhh~... ahh"... idk if that makes sense.

Avoid wierd metaphors- Don't say 'He ate her out like a man that was starved for week' or 'she sucked his dick like it was the tastiest lollipop.' Like then I start to think of starving men and lollipops while I'm trying to finish....um okay moving on.

Learn a little about sex-ed- Obviously if you write smut you know what sex is. But I wold consider looking up the terms for different body parts, how sex usually feels for women and men, and what kinds of things they like. Kinda goes off the 'be realistic' part but I think it wouldn't hurt to know more. Watch some porn if it helps, although porn is already highly fabricated.

But smut is supposed to be an exeraggeration of actual sex so your foundation should be realistic.

Alright guys thats all the tips I have today, lmk if you like them, if you, if you don't, or whatever your thoughts are because as a smut writer, I really want to hear your feedback.

Okay thats all!
