I'm tense as I stand next to Nathan, squeezing his hand tightly as we stand on my driveway, waiting. It's the day of their baseball game against Westview and the boys had to leave within ten minutes to get ready. My parents have organized a barbeque at our house for after the game, win or lose, and one of our guests were on their way.
"Ow, babe, calm down, it's not that bad," he chuckles under his breath and I give him an incredulous look in return.
"Not that bad? Have you met her?" I ask rhetorically, knowing he's never had the pleasure of meeting her.
"Oh, come on, she's an old lady," he laughs with Sebastian. Olivia is smirking, bouncing from side to side in excitement. Courtney and Quinn look like they're going to throw up any second. At least they get it.
"You don't understand, she's related to Olivia. Think of Olivia as an old lady, just one hundred times worse," I shudder in fear.
At that moment, a car pulls up the driveway and I want to run inside and lock myself in the bathroom.
"Izzy, you old bat, how are you?" Olivia shouts as she pulls open the passenger door of her dad's car. Something flies out of the car and I squeak, ducking behind Nathan to avoid injury. I look over my shoulder and realize it was a shoe. That was a close one.
"Call me a bat again, and you'll regret it, you little shit," Grandma Izzy threatens as she slowly climbs out of the car. "You, Charlie" she points at me and my eyes widen in fear, "grab that shoe so I can hit her with it," she points at Olivia.
My mother steps off the front step and walks up to Grandma Izzy, "Izzy, it's so lovely to see you again," my mother says cheerfully. Dad had taken Maddie to the movies in the hopes of keeping her away from Grandma Izzy and her foul mouth for as long as they could.
"Clara, you've aged," Grandma Izzy replies nonchalantly.
"Like fine wine, Izzy, you, on the other hand, have aged like milk," my mother smiles brightly and hugs Izzy, who pats her cheek softly with a smile.
Olivia's dad walks around the front of the car and hands a cane to Grandma Izzy, who snatches it grumpily.
"A cane? You're conforming to the old people now, Izzy? Who even are you?" Olivia asks in shock.
Grandma Izzy leans forward and smacks Olivia's foot with her cane. I wince at the thought of how much pain that must have caused.
"Ow, Izzy!" Olivia scolds her with a laugh.
"You deserved it," Grandma Izzy raises her chin, challenging Olivia to say something else.
I hear an audible gulp and look over at Sebastian and Nathan, who had been laughing at my terrified state not five minutes ago, now standing still with nervous looks on their face.
"Now, why am I forced to come here on my one day of freedom?" She asks rudely as she slowly walks up the front steps and into the house.
"Because we're going to watch the boys' baseball game. It's a big one, they're playing against their rival school," Olivia's father, Johnathan, replies, patting Sebastian on the shoulder.
"Am I supposed to give a fuck about baseball?" Grandma Izzy asks with an eyebrow raised. Sebastian shrinks back away from her.
Tessa walks up to her with a huge grin and bows her head subtly, "Izzy, it is an honor to finally meet you," Tessa says with an awed expression.
"You the one that slashed the bitch's tires?" Grandma Izzy asks with a raised chin. Tessa nods her head slowly and Izzy smiles in response, "I like this one," she says looking at my mother. I could have sworn I saw a tear in Tessa's eye as Grandma Izzy praised her for slashing someone's tires.
My mom stands next to me with her arm linked through mine, "Yes, we're all so... proud," she says uncomfortably.
"Well, I'm starting to understand Liv a lot more now," Nathan says with a chuckle as we watch Olivia and Grandma Izzy taking turns to smack each other.
"You should have seen Izzy and Valentina, Olivia's mother, they were crazy together," Mom tells him with a fond smile on her face. "One time, when we were in high school, Izzy literally ran over Valentina's phone because she wouldn't do the dishes," she laughs.
"She threw a hairdryer at Liv once, for insulting her wrinkles, but she hit me instead. I had to get three stitches," I add in, rubbing my arm where the scar is.
"Wow, that's impressive," Nathan chuckles, his fingers slowly grazing over my scar.
Grandma Izzy stops in front of Courtney and Quinn. She nods her head at Courtney, "Are you still a stuck-up bitch?"
Courtney takes a deep breath and smiles, "I try my best, Izzy."
She nods her head, "Good, good. And you quiet one? Are you still aspiring to be a spinster?"
"Actually Izzy, Quinn has a girlfriend, her name is Lilly," Olivia informs her. Everyone stands quietly waiting for Izzy to catch on to what Olivia said.
She looks over Quinn with pinched eyebrows, "I see you're still the only smart one, boys are such a disappointment, aren't they?" Quinn laughs as Izzy says this with a small grin, winking at Quinn, "I expect to meet her soon." Quinn nods her head with a wide smile.
"Hey, not all of us are disappointments," Sebastian defends himself, "You're just an old lady, aren't you supposed to knit, bake cookies, and shit?" Sebastian says rudely.
"I don't bake cookies, I eat them," Grandma Izzy snaps back with a grin.
"Point one to Grandma Izzy," Sebastian replies with a smirk.
Izzy swings her cane at his foot but he dodges out of the way, "Call me Grandma again and I will eat you for lunch," she threatens, pointing her cane at him.
"Okay let's go sit on the patio, Izzy, the boys have to leave for the field in a few minutes," my mom says, leading Izzy outside to the chairs. Johnathan follows them, typing on his phone.
Grandma Izzy looks over her shoulder at me, "Charlie, find the tequila. If I'm going to this shit game, I want to be prepared."
I breathe a sigh of relief as the back-sliding door closes.
"Isn't she great?" Olivia laughs, smiling at us.
"Terrific," Sebastian mumbles.
"More like terrifying," Nathan laughs as we move into the kitchen. I sit down on a stool and he stands behind me with his hands around my shoulders.
Tessa starts talking about how when she grows up she wants to be like Grandma Izzy and Olivia is rummaging through the fridge, looking for snacks. Sebastian is standing behind her, watching her quietly. They're still a little awkward around each other since the whole 'breakup plan' incident, but they're slowly going back to normal.
I hear a creak from the living room and Sophie pops her head in, "Is it safe?" she whispers to us.
"Coward," Sebastian smirks at her.
"Hey, this was the first time you met her, you and Tessa never came with us to visit her over the years and you've never had her threaten to punch you in the boob for eating her chocolate pudding," Sophie hisses as she walks into the kitchen. She's been hiding in her room for the past couple of days, probably terrified of Grandma Izzy's presence.
Olivia, Quinn, Courtney, and I raise our hands in the air and speak simultaneously, "I have."
Tessa laughs loudly, "She is amazing."
"What time do you have to go?" I lean back into Nathan's chest as he tightens his arms around me.
"Like five minutes ago," he smirks, looking down at me.
I elbow him in the ribs, "Then go! Coach Asshole is going to kill you if you're not there on time," I tell him, pushing him in the direction of the door.
Sebastian nods his head in agreement and looks over at Olivia, with an unreadable expression on his face. She's stuffing her face with a piece of cake and his lips lift into a small smile.
"Okay, so we'll see you girls there?" Nathan asks as he pats Sebastian on the shoulder, snapping him out of his daze.
"We'll see you soon," I smile up at him as he leans down to kiss me tenderly.
Sebastian scratches the back of his neck nervously as he moves towards Olivia. Her head perks up as he stops in front of her, her face covered in frosting. "I'll see you later."
"Yup," she nods her head, leaning forward, puckering her lips dramatically. He grins and leans forward, kissing her quickly. He leans back and now he has frosting on his top lip. "Go kick some ass," she wipes the frosting off his face.
They say their goodbyes to everyone around the house and leave in Nathan's car for the field.
"Charlie! Where is my tequila?" Grandma Izzy yells from outside. I groan loudly and walk over to my parents' liquor cabinet.
**********************
The parking lot is packed with people walking towards the busy baseball field. Dad and Maddie had gotten here early to save us seats. Or to hide from a certain Spanish grandma. The field is filled with kids running around, throwing baseballs at each other, or playing a game of tag. I can see Maddie's blonde hair running around the pitcher's mound as a little boy tries to chase her. Mia, Nathan's niece, is standing by home plate swinging a plastic bat at the balls being thrown at her.
Both teams are spread around the outfield, warming themselves up for the game. I can see the Westview team practicing some form of drills as Chase yells at one of his teammates for missing the ball. Nathan, on the other hand, is standing with some of the junior players, laughing as they sprint from one point to another.
"Ugh, it is too fucking hot here," Grandma Izzy mumbles as Olivia and Johnathan help her onto the stands.
My dad is sitting in the middle row with an umbrella in his hand, waiting for us to join him. He stands when he sees us and helps Grandma Izzy into a seat.
"Hello Peter, I see you were too much of a pansy to greet me at your house," Grandma Izzy sits down next to him with a sarcastic smile and snatches the umbrella out of his hand to protect her from the sun.
My dad clears his throat awkwardly, "Always good to see you, Izzy," he says politely, getting up to greet Johnathan as they move away towards the concession stand.
"We'll be back, we're just going to chat to the boys before the game," I tell mom, jerking my thumb in their direction.
"Clara! How are you?" Katherine, Nathan's mom shouts out as she moves through the crowd with her husband, Gabriel, and their daughter, Nathan's sister, Carly behind them.
They come over to us and I smile as Katherine moves in for a hug, "Darling, lovely to see you."
"You too, Katherine," I tell her warmly, "We're just heading over to the boys, to wish them luck."
"Great thinking," she winks, moving over to my mom. They chat for a few minutes as we head down the stands and onto the field. Carly stops to hug me and tells me that we will chat some more once the game starts. The sun is beating down on us as we maneuver around the kids playing and towards the team.
"Tess!" We hear from behind us and Tessa whips her head around and grins widely.
"Drew, what are you doing here?" Tessa asks as he walks up to us.
"Thought I would come see what all the fuss was about with this game, you know since I got hit in the face over it," he smiles with a shrug, lifting his chin to show off his little scar from the fight.
"Makes sense, pretty boy," Olivia smirks walking over to him and pulling him along with us, "Nice scar, the ladies must love it," she laughs, winking at him.
"Oh yeah, I'm a total chick magnet now," he replies sarcastically, rolling his eyes, looking at Tessa with a grin.
"Hello, boys! Don't worry, your good luck charm is here!" Olivia shouts to the boys as we get closer.
"Are you sure about that Grace?" Cole asks as he throws the ball to Sebastian, almost hitting him in the face because he was staring at Olivia.
"Are you distracting my players, Grace?" Coach Miller grumbles when he sees us.
"Doing the best that I can, Mills," Grace grins, bowing dramatically.
"Can I just say how fine your asses look in baseball pants?" Courtney randomly points out to all the boys.
"Thank you, Courtney, finally! All those squats were not for nothing!" Cole exclaims turning around and starts doing squats. Everyone laughs loudly as some of the boys join Cole.
"All of you stop it! This is a serious game, stop acting like idiots," Coach yells.
Nathan walks up to coach and places a hand on his shoulder, "Chill Coach, they're just easing the tension. I don't want them tense before the game," Nathan explains, walking over to us.
"We wanted to wish you good luck," I smile, hugging him tightly.
"Now, I want you boys to kick some ass!" Olivia yells, causing a cheer to erupt through the team. Sebastian walks over to her silently and she immediately reaches for him, pulling him closer to her. "I want those assholes to feel pain!"
"They're not physically fighting, Liv," I tell her with a chuckle.
"Feel the pain of losing, better?" she looks at me and I give her thumbs up. "Now go out there and bring home a trophy," she shouts as the cheers get louder. Sebastian kisses her deeply before letting her go to join his team.
"Do great," I wink, kissing Nathan's cheek as he moves over to his team. Sebastian looks over at me and I tap my chest lightly where my heart is, wishing him good luck; Tessa repeats it with him.
The team cheers and runs to the dugout to get themselves ready for the game as the field workers, chase the kids off the field to prepare it for the game.
We head off the field and back to the stands, "Wow, Liv, you're so motivational," Tessa quips with a grin as she jumps on Drew's back so he can carry her to our seats. He huffs and grumbles about her being heavy but she just smacks the top of his head and he grins, shutting his mouth.
"They better fucking win, I have $100 bucks on them," Olivia mutters as we take our seats.
"Of course, you do," Quinn sighs, calling Lilly over to her from the front of the crowd.
