CHAPTER 8

The classroom was very rowdy as the science and art students had a joint class. Jazz was busy bragging about her luxurious life to a group of students who flocked around her and to anyone who cared to listen. Abu was cracking his infamous jokes to a group of girls who were giggling away. Kelechi and Ronke were chatting with their friends when Osas walked up to them with a smirk.

"Hey, fine girl," He said as he sat on the desk in front of Ronke.

Ronke scowled. "What do you want now?"

"I want your love," He sang.

The other girls laughed but stopped when Ronke glared at them.

"I'm sorry but you can't have it," Ronke replied dryly.

"I always get what I want," Osas said, leaning forward.

"Just leave me alone." Ronke pushed him away but he held onto her hand. "Leave me alone I said!" She repeated and made to slap him but he held her hand. She struggled to free her hands to no avail.

"Leave her alone!!" Her friends tried to help her by pulling her away from him but he wouldn't leave her.

"Can't you see how much I love you Roro?" Osas said before letting go of her hands.

"All I can see is how crazy you are. Don't you dare touch me again you pervert," Ronke warned.

"How could I possibly keep my hands away from you," Osas said and held her waist but before Ronke could react, someone pushed Osas roughly to the ground.

"Babe are you okay?" Divine asked her but she was too shocked to respond as her eyes darted around the class.

The class had gone quiet and was beholding the scene before them. Osas slowly got to his feet and dusted his uniform, clearly annoyed. Divine stepped right in front of him and they started to confront each other in pidgin English.

"Guy wetin dey sup now, why you dey push me anyhow?" Osas asked in anger.
(Why did you push me like that?)

"Na you I dey suppose ask that question. Why you dey misbehave with my babe?" Divine replied and everyone oohed.
(I should be asking you that question. Why are you misbehaving with my girl?)

"I no know now. You for tell me say na your babe, I for no reason am."
(I didn't know. You should've told me she's your girl, I wouldn't have touched her.)

"Now you done know, so make you no dey behave with her like that again."
(Now you know, so don't behave this way towards her again.)

Osas rubbed his elbow. "Something you for tell me without pushing me like that, na because you be my guy na why I no retaliate."
(You should've just told me instead of pushing me, it's because you're my guy that's why I didn't retaliate.)

"I'm sorry about that," Divine apologized.

"It's okay, you for tell me since say Ronke na your babe so I go know how I go dey look am," Osas said jokingly and Divine chuckled but Ronke was not amazed in any way as she glared at him.
(You should've told me before that Ronke was your girl so I won't eye her.)

"Thank you for your attention, you may go back to what you were doing now," Divine said to the class and they did as he said while some of the girls formed gossip groups.

When everyone had gone back to what they were doing, Ronke pulled Divine to a corner. "Why did you call me your babe in front of the whole class?"

"What do you mean?"

"I want to know why you called me your babe in front of the whole class," Ronke repeated quite irritatedly.

"Because you're my babe," He said and tried hold her hands but she withdrew them. "Is everything okay?" He asked.

"No, nothing is okay. The secret that we tried so hard to keep, you just went and disclosed it to everyone just like that!"

"I didn't do it on purpose, Osas was bothering you. I had to step in and I didn't know when I blurted it."

Ronke groaned and turned around only to see Jazz, Kelechi and Osas smiling at her. "What is it now?" She asked impatiently.

"I knew that you two were dating, so did Jazz and Osas," Kelechi said.

"What?" Ronke and Divine asked in unison.

"Then why did you create a scene?" Divine asked Osas.

"Don't blame me, we created the scene together. And this was Jazz's idea," Osas said and Jazz smirked. "At your service," She said and chuckled.

"And you went through with it?" Ronke asked Kelechi who shrugged in response. "You should've just come and talked to me."

"Well you shouldn't have kept this a secret from me in the first place. I was upset with you and that's why I agreed to this."

"But this was completely unnecessary, now the whole class knows."

"Calm down, it's not like anyone is going to talk."

"What if someone does?"

"Are you just going to skip the part where you apologize?"

Ronke sighed deeply. "I'm sorry."

"You're forgiven," Kelechi said and went to her seat.

"I hope you're still not angry with me Kel, I said I'm sorry," Ronke said as she squatted in front of her best friend.

"It's okay, I'm not angry, I just wanted to show you that you can't keep a secret from your best friend forever," Kelechi said and hugged her.

"So that's it? No fighting? Come on, where's the drama?" Jazz asked and they chuckled.

"You are only good at causing drama," Ella said and showed up in front of Jazz flanked by her clique.

"And you are only good at not being good at anything," Jazz retorted.

"You just got out of suspension, you don't want to get into trouble again. Just leave it, she's not worth it," Kelechi said and held Jazz's arm.

"Yes Jazz, do as you're told or you'll get into trouble," Titi said and the girls giggled.

"Ha ha ha, I'd like to see you laughing with an incomplete denture," Jazz said as she stepped towards them but Kelechi pulled her back.

Miss Linda, the civic education teacher, came into the class and everywhere went silent. "Good morning ma," The students stood up and greeted.

"Morning class. I'm sorry for being late, it was not intentional. Now get seated, you all will have to cooperate so we can cover up our topic for today," She said before turning to the board and everyone went to their various seats.

"It's not the same person that's been cooking our food that made this stew," Ronke remarked as they had their lunch.

"How do you know that?" Kelechi asked.

"The stew tastes very delicious today," Ronke pointed out.

Kelechi laughed but it died down when she saw three girls approach their corner of the table. "Hey girls, mind if we sit here?" Titi asked politely.

"Yes we do mind," Jazz snapped.

"She wasn't talking to you," Ella snapped back.

"She certainly wasn't talking to our shoes when she said 'hey girls'," Jazz snapped again.

"Can we sit here?" Grace asked, holding Ella's hand to calm her down.

"No, go find somewhere else to sit."

"You don't own this school, we can sit wherever we want," Ella said and sat down next to Jazz while her crew sat opposite her.

"If you try anything I will pour this stew into your nostrils," Ronke warned as she points her spoon at Grace who sat next to her.

"Chill Roro," Grace said mockingly.

"Don't call me that," Ronke said.

"You know, my parents called me on Friday. They were very disappointed and angry at me for getting suspended. This is the first time this is happening and it's all your fault Jazz," Ella said, turning to Jazz.

"It will surely happen again if you don't stop blaming me for your misery," Jazz replied without looking away from her food.

"Can you believe how burnt these plantains are, I wonder who fried them," Abu said from behind them, holding up what was supposed to be a piece of fried plantain. He turned to them and waved, bringing his hand down immediately he saw their expressions. "Oh, sorry for interrupting," He said and turned back to his food.

"It's your fault, if you hadn't bumped into me and been so rude, this wouldn't have happened," Ella continued.

"No, it's your fault cause if you hadn't been so dumb this wouldn't have happened." Jazz finally turned to Ella.

"Did you just call me dumb?"

"Well, I was sitting here having my lunch in peace when you toddled over here and decided to bore me with your whining."

"You think you're so smart." Ella stood up.

"I am." Jazz smirked.

Without wasting a second, Ella emptied the water in her water bottle into Jazz's food, some of the water spilling onto Jazz's laps. Jazz stood up abruptly, anger replacing her confused expression. "What the hell?" She said, attempting to use her hands to clean the water from her skirt.

Ella laughed. "At least now you can get rid of that ridiculously short skirt."

"Not until I get rid of you first," Jazz said and pushed Ella who lost her balance and fell to the ground. Her crew ran over to her and helped her up. "How dare you push me?" She asked.

"You still talking?" Jazz fumed and made for her but was held back by Kelechi and Abu. "Jazz I told you she's not worth it, let it go," Kelechi said.

"Leave her, I would like to see what she can do," Ella said, a sinister smile on her lips.

"Jazz don't listen to her, she's just trying to get on your nerves so you'll do something bad and get in trouble," Kelechi pleaded.

Ronke started to cheer for Jazz and some other students joined in while some tried to stay far away from the scene. "You hear that? They want me to rip your arms off," Jazz said and lunged towards Ella but was held back again.

"What's going on here?" The deep masculine voice that dripped with authority made the cafeteria go quiet and everyone stared at the man standing by the door with his bushy brows raised inquisitively, Mr Nwosu, the Vice Principal.
