CHAPTER 7

The girls stared at Ronke as she made her way to her bed, all the while hummng to herself.

"What? Did you guys miss me?" Ronke immediately sat up on her bed.

"Yes. Where were you all day?" Kelechi asked and folded her arms.

"I told you I went to hang out with my classmates," Ronke replied.

"Okay. How was it?"

"It was fun."

"Of course it was. Why don't I come with you next time so we can all hang out together?" Kelechi said and Jazz chuckled.

"It's not as if we're going somewhere special, it's just a casual hangout within school."

"How come Zainab wasn't aware of the hangout?"

"It's just a few of us that planned the hangout, not everyone in my class knows about it."

"Then why--"

"Why are you asking me so many questions?"

"Just wanted to be part of the fun, but it's okay." Kelechi shrugged.

Ronke's phone rang and she glanced at the girls. "I'll be right back," she said before leaving.

Jazz stood up and headed for the door. "Where are you going?" Kelechi asked.

"Come on, we all know she's lying to our faces but we need to see what she's really up to," Jazz replied, taking Kelechi's hand as they left the room.

They followed Ronke down the hall and then down the stairs but bumped into Mrs Kayode.

"Are you girls okay? Where are you off to in such a hurry?" She asked.

"We need to go--" Jazz started but Kelechi interrupted her. "Good afternoon ma," she said.

"Afternoon. Where are you in such a hurry to?"

"Nowhere in particular, just wanna grab some fresh air," Jazz replied.

"How do you grab air?" Mrs Kayode asked, confused.

"That's why we're following Ronke, she's a science student so she can show us," Kelechi answered.

Mrs Kayode seemed convinced. "Okay, but be careful so you don't trip or fall," She said and continued on her way upstairs.

Jazz and Kelechi giggled as they left the hostel and looked around. "Dang, we lost her. Thanks to your dim matron," Jazz said.

"Let's just go back, Ronke is very smart, she won't let anyone catch her so easily."

"She may be smart, but I'm smarter. I'll make sure we catch her, just watch." Jazz smirked.

"You both want to turn us into spies," Kelechi joked as they went back to their room.

That night, a sudden noise woke Kelechi up from sleep and she instinctively turned to Ronke's bed only to find that she wasn't there. She went into the bathroom but it was empty, that was when she noticed the door slightly ajar, remembering that matron had shut the door before they went to bed.

"Where could this girl have gone to?" She asked herself.

"To see her boyfriend, that's where," Jazz replied in a whisper from behind her. She hadn't even noticed when Jazz moved.

"How do you know that?"

"I saw her texting someone before she left, I was about to wake you before you got up. Come on, we have to follow her."

"What, by this time? What if we get caught?"

"She's going out to meet God knows who by this time and you're worried about breaking the rules?" Jazz asked rhetorically.

"I don't know about this."

"We have to know where she's going, who she's going to meet and if she's gonna be safe. For all we know, he could be a teacher."

"Eww, Ronke is not into older men especially not the ones that are sadists."

"Then let's go, we've already wasted time," Jazz said and led the way out of the room.

Luckily, they saw Ronke leaving the hostel and quietly followed her, taking cover whenever she turned around to make sure no one was following her. They followed her to the T. D. lab and waited for her to enter before peeping through the window and saw her with Divine. They hugged before he carried her onto a table, resting his hands on her thighs and she ran her hands through his full hair.

"So she's really seeing Divine!" Kelechi said and Jazz hushed her.

Just then, a chubby boy of average height tip toed towards them and squatted in front of the window with them.

"Okay, what the hell are you doing here fat boy?" Jazz asked him.

"I should be asking you the same thing slim girl," The boy retorted.

Kelechi sighed audibly. "Osas!"

"You know this guy?" Jazz asked.

"Yes, he's in our class, Jazz," Kelechi answered and turned to Osas. "What are you doing here?" She asked.

"I'm here to find out why Divine snuck out of the room in the middle of the night to come here of all places," He replied.

"We're also here to find out the same thing, turns out they're seeing each other." Kelechi pointed to Ronke and Divine.

"No way! I thought he hated that chick."

"I also thought she hated him too, but look at them now."

"This guy has a lot of explaining to do."

"Come on, let's listen in on their convo." Jazz gently opened one of the windows.

"What are you doing? Do you want them to see us?" Kelechi asked in a harsh whisper.

"We need to hear what they're saying," Jazz replied.

Divine stroked Ronke's arms. "Why can't you?" They heard him ask her.

"Kel is already getting suspicious of me so we'll have to stop meeting each other for a while. We can communicate through texts for now okay, I don't want anyone finding out about us," Ronke said.

"I don't like this idea at all. Why don't you just tell Kelechi about us so you don't have to be so covert about meeting me. I mean, she's your best friend and also your roommate, keeping this from her must be difficult."

"I know, but if Kel were to find out, she would ask me to break up with you or even report us. She doesn't like you and she doesn't believe in all this relationship stuff."

"Who says I don't believe in relationships?" Kelechi pouted.

"Why doesn't she like me? Everyone likes me," Divine said.

"Remember how we hated each other and used to fight all the time? Well, she just kinda disliked you, you know, as my bestie," Ronke replied, shrugging.

Divine threw his head back and laughed, careful not to be too loud. "You girls are really something. It's been a while, she should get over it already."

"It's not going to be that easy. Knowing Kel, she would probably think you're on a secret mission to murder me." Ronke laughed, and so did Jazz and Osas.

"Shut up," Kelechi hissed.

"Wow! She is so protective of you," Divine said.

"She is. So you see we just have to keep this from her and everyone else for as long as we can, okay."

"Okay princess," He said.

"You've still not told me how you got access to this lab, it's supposed to be locked by this time."

"The door lock got broken, but it will be fixed tomorrow."

"Okay, we should leave now before anyone notices that we're gone," Ronke said and Divine helped her down from the table and kissed her forehead.

"See you tomorrow babe," He said as she headed for the door.

"Let's go, let's go!" Jazz kept saying as they made their way out of the building successfully even though they kept pushing and bumping into each other on the way out.

"Be careful and don't get caught," Kelechi said to Osas as they parted ways and she and Jazz headed to the senior girls' hostel.

They quietly ran up the stairs and to their room, jumping into their beds as gently as possible so as not to wake up their roommates or anybody else.

Ronke came into the room shortly after, checking if they were all still asleep before getting into bed.

"Where were you last night?" Kelechi asked Ronke as they got ready for school.

"I-I... What are you talking about?" Ronke asked back.

"I woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom but you were not in the room."

"Oh, I, I heard some noises outside our room so I went to see what was going on."

"And what was going on?" Kelechi raised her brows.

"Oh, nothing, I was just hearing things."

"Uhm hmm."

"I can't believe my suspension is over." Jazz groaned as she came out of the bathroom in a bathrobe, brushing her hair.

"What? You're not ready yet? We're going to be late!" Kelechi said.

"Chill, not everyone goes to the assembly forty-five minutes before time." Jazz sat leisurely on her bed and brought out her cosmetics and makeup.

"Just hurry up."

"I have to go now, I'll see you guys later," Ronke said as she carried her backpack.

"Why so in a hurry, there's still time," Kelechi said and Jazz rolled her eyes.

"I have to go and submit an assignment we were asked to submit before assembly because we have the class right after assembly," Ronke explained quickly and rushed out of the room, leaving her roommates to stare after her.
