CHAPTER 6

Jazz woke up by 10am; she was suspended from school so she might as well sleep in. She looked around and saw her roommates chatting and giggling. What were they still doing here? Didn't they have school to go to? "Are you guys ditching school?" Jazz asked.

Kelechi and Ronke stared at her for a while. "Today is Saturday," Kelechi answered.

"Really?!" Jazz was so excited she could barely contain herself as she hurriedly made her bed and moonwalked into the bathroom and after a while, moonwalked back out. She put on a crop top, ripped jeans and sneakers then threw on a jacket and ran out of the room with her phone.

Why would this stupid school only allow phones on weekends? She thought as she made her way downstairs.

Sure they were allowed to talk to their parents during weekdays with the matron's phone but she was still mad at them and so didn't want to talk to them yet. She would finally get to talk to her best friend, Aimee, today. She couldn't wait to tell her all about the school and everything that happened and also rant about the things and people she didn't like. After about two or three rings, Aimee picked the call.

"Oh my god Jazz!" she screamed.

"Aimee!!"

"I've missed you so much. I thought I'd never hear from you again, your phone has been switched off all week!"

"I've missed you more than you can imagine Aimee. I would've called, it's just that phones are only allowed on weekends and the signal here is terrible."

"Oh. So how are you and how is your new school?"

"Let me start off with I hate this school. I wonder what my parents were thinking bringing me here?"

"You know, I kinda agree with your parents on this one."

"Excuse me? Are you taking their side now?"

"Yes. I'm your best friend and I want the best for you. I think your parents made the right decision by taking you there. You really needed a reform and if your parents took you to that school then it's probably good for you. After all, your dad schooled there and look at him now. I'm sure in no time you'll get used to the place."

"Oh shut up Aimee. I can't believe you're saying this to me." Jazz was visibly getting upset.

"Jazz listen, you should just accept your parents' decision and see the change a change in environment is gonna have on you."

"I don't need to listen to any bullshit that you have to say."

"Oh come on."

"I thought you were my friend, Aimee."

"I am your friend, Jazz."

"I don't think so," Jazz said and ended the call. Aimee tried calling back but Jazz ignored her calls.

Jazz groaned as she walked on the grass not really knowing exactly where she was going. She bumped into someone and scowled at the person who held her so she wouldn't lose balance. "Careful, watch where you're going," A male voice said and Jazz looked up at the owner; the boy was tall and dark, with his dark brown hair in a neat haircut and an amused look on his face.

"Let go of me," Jazz said rudely and he laughed, carefully letting go of her.

"Is that the thanks I get for saving you from falling?" he asked.

"You're the one who bumped into me so saving me from falling is your apology."

He laughed again. "So is my apology accepted?" he asked.

"You have a good sense of humour."

"I know." He held out his hand. "I'm Mitchel."

"I didn't ask for your name."

"I just wanted to introduce myself."

"Good. Now that you have, I'll be on my way."

Mitchel followed her. "Can I walk with you?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Cause I wanna walk alone."

"Why do you wanna walk alone?"

"Cause I wanna walk alone. Geez don't you understand anything?!"

"I'm sorry, you don't have to be rude, I was just trying to be nice."

"I don't care."

"Fine, we can just walk in silence, you won't even know I'm here."

"Whatever."

They walked in silence to the entrance of the senior girls' hostel and Mitchel stopped.

"I'll see you some other time Jazz," He said

"How do you know my name?"

"Who doesn't? You're kind of like a celebrity now."

Jazz walked into the hostel without a word but turned around and saw Mitchel smiling at her.

He has a cute smile though, she thought.

And instead of smiling back she just scoffed and turned back around. Mitchel shook his head, laughing as he walked away.

"Did I just see you with Mitchel?" Kelechi asked as soon as Jazz entered the room.

"How did you see us?" Jazz asked back.

"Through the window."

"Yeah, I was with him."

"He's so fine right?" Kelechi asked, raising her brows and making a funny expression.

"Yeah, I guess. Look, I don't wanna talk about him now," Jazz said and fell on her bed.

"You don't like him?"

"No, he seems really nice but--"

"He's not your type?"

"Leave her alone na. Can't you see she's not in the mood," Ronke said.

"Thank you." Jazz sighed.

"Fine." Kelechi surrendered and went over to Jazz's bed. "I can see you're not in a good mood this morning. Tell me, what happened?"

"I just broke up with my bestie."

"Why?"

"She thinks my parents did the right thing bringing me here."

"Don't you think they did?"

"I do not."

"Well whatever you think is right or not, this is a pretty stupid reason to break up with your best friend whom you've been dying to talk to all week," Kelechi said.

"She's right," Ronke said as she fixed her hair and posed in front of the mirror.

"I don't care. I don't wanna be friends with someone who doesn't support me."

"But she does, and that's why she's happy your parents brought you here. I don't know if you know, but this is one of the best boarding schools in Lagos and I'm not just bragging. This school has produced a lot of responsible and successful people over the years, including your father who obviously doesn't regret attending this school," Kelechi said.

"Whatever. I don't wanna talk about this anymore," Jazz said and turned away.

"Whatever you say." Kelechi stood up from Jazz's bed.

"Alright guys, see you later," Ronke said as she headed for the door.

"Where are you going?" Kelechi asked.

"Just going to hang out with some of my classmates," Ronke replied.

"Aren't you going to wash your clothes today?"

"Amara and Fatima will help me with that," Ronke said and left.

"She has been acting strange lately or is it just me. She suddenly spends a lot of time with her classmates and leaves all her chores for those poor girls to do for her," Kelechi commented when Ronke left the room.

"Or maybe you're a little jealous. Just because you're best friends doesn't mean you have to be together all the time," Jazz said.

"I know, but it's just so strange how she's always going to hang out with them, I mean, they're not even her best friends."

"It's okay, she'll be back before you know it," Jazz assured her.

Several hours later and Ronke was still not back. Kelechi was getting worried and Jazz was just focused on her phone, laughing at some funny posts and videos.

"I hope Ronke is okay, she isn't back yet and she didn't come for lunch. She didn't even take her phone with her!" Kelechi said as she called Ronke and her phone rang on her bed.

"Chill, I'm sure she's okay," Jazz said, her eyes still glued to her phone.

"I saw senior Ronke this morning with senior Divine in the quad," Amarachi said.

"What?" Kelechi was surprised.

"I also saw her with senior Divine having lunch in the basket ball court," Fatima added.

"Why would she lie to me just to hang out with Divine, I thought she hated him?" Kelechi asked no one in particular.

"Turns out she doesn't." Jazz smirked.

Just then, Ronke came into the room humming a song and smiling to herself. The girls exchanged looks before staring back at her. "Hey guys, what's up?" She asked.
