CHAPTER 4

"You finally decided to put on your uniform," Ronke said as Jazz stepped out in the school uniform; White shirt, a red tie, burgundy blazer with the school logo imprinted on it, gray vest and matching skirt.

"Hmm, it doesn't look bad on you," Kelechi commented.

"Nothing looks bad on me," Jazz said as they went to class.

After the assembly, Ella walked up to Jazz with a smirk.

"Now you look like a student of this school, very good. But you will also have to get rid of the heels," She said.

"I would like to get rid of your teeth with my heels," Jazz said, folding up the sleeves of her blazer.

"You think I'm scared of you?" Ella said and walked away rather too quickly.

"She's definitely scared of you." Kelechi laughed.

They entered their classroom and it was even more noisy than it usually was. Apparently, the boys were talking about a football match they watched the previous night and were being too loud. Several girls rolled their eyes at them while some just went on with what they were doing.

Abu was the only boy who wasn't talking football, he was with a group of girls, cracking jokes and making funny gestures, making them laugh.

Kelechi tried to calm the boys down and even pleaded with them to reduce their voices but they just carried on.

"That's it! I'm going to call a teacher," She said as she headed for the door.

"Wait, if you report them to a teacher you're going to look like a snitch," Princess said, stopping her.

"So what do you want me to do? If a teacher comes in now, I'm going to be punished cause I'm the class rep and I'm supposed to keep the class in order."

"It's better you wait for a teacher to come then you can tell them who the noisemakers are."

"Even Samuel is making noise with them, I wonder what kind of an assistant he is," Kelechi said as she sat down.

"I got this," Jazz said as she climbed the top of a desk and screamed. Her voice drowned the noise, it was even loud enough for the whole school to hear, some people had to cover their ears.

"Hey you!" She yelled, pointing at the group of boys who were the source of the noise. "Could you please discuss your soccer game a little more quietly?! If you don't keep it down then I'm gonna have to make you!"

"Oh my god Jazz please come down," Kelechi pleaded but Jazz ignored her.

The class was suddenly quiet as everyone stared at Jazz. A teacher then entered the class, a look of worry on his face.

"What is going on here? Is everything okay?" He asked, searching their faces.

"Everything is fine sir," Kelechi replied.

His worried expression soon turned to one of surprise when he saw Jazz who was still on the desk. "And what are you doing up there?" He asked.

"I was just tryna keep the class in order." Jazz smiled as she came down.

"Everybody go to your seats," He ordered and they all hurried to their seats.

"Good morning sir," They greeted.

"So since I entered your class, it's now you're greeting me," He said.

He kept his textbook and Bible on the teacher's desk and wrote the date and subject on the board: Christian Religious Studies.

Abubarkar along with some other Muslims picked up their notebooks and Qurans and left the class.

"Where are they going?" Jazz asked Princess.

"They're going to have their IRS class in another classroom," Princess replied.

Mr Emmanuel wrote the topic on the board: The Resurrection of Christ. He called out a Bible verse and everyone opened their Bibles except Jazz who was just looking around.

"Hello there, uh..." Mr Emmanuel gestured to Jazz.

"Jazz," She finished for him.

"Yes, Jazz. Don't you have a Bible?"

"No."

"It's alright, you can share with someone for the meantime. Just make sure you go to the bookshop later and request for a Bible, tell them to give you the Revised Standard Version cause that's what we'll be using in this class okay."

"Yeah sure."

"Come on, let's share," Princess said, moving her desk closer to Jazz's.

"Thanks," Jazz mumbled.

"It's time for extracurricular activities," Kelechi announced to Jazz as some students started leaving the class.

Jazz groaned. "I'm not interested."

"Is there anything you're ever interested in Jazz? Come on, there's a lot of clubs you can choose to join. We have the Rotaract club, the press and debating society, science club, French club, maths club, dance club, home economics club, music club or you could join my club, the theatre club."

"I don't wanna join a club."

"You have to because it's compulsory for every student to be a member of a club."

"Fine. I guess I'll just join your club." Jazz finally agreed.

Kelechi clapped her hands excitedly. "Yay."

"You really want to join the theatre club?" Princess asked.

"Yeah whatever."

"That's good, but why act when you can debate on important topics? You should join the press club," Princess said.

"I'll pass," Jazz said as she and Kelechi left the class. They met Ronke and another girl in the hallway.

"Hey Kel, hey Jazz," Ronke greeted.

"Hey Ronke, hey Zainab," Kelechi also greeted.

"What's up?" Zainab replied.

"Jazz, this is Zainab, the head girl, and Zainab, I'm sure you know who Jazz is by now," Ronke introduced and chuckled.

"Hello Jazz," Zainab greeted.

"Hi," Jazz replied.

"We were going to your class now. Jazz, would you like to join the science club? It's not only very fun but also very educative and you get to learn a lot of cool things," Ronke said.

"We were just on our way to the theatre club, I don't want to be late so Mr Dominic can see my draft script," Kelechi said, showing them the script in her hand.

"Oh, okay. See you later then," Ronke said as she left with Zainab.

"Let's go," Kelechi said, leading the way.

"What are you doing here?" Ella asked when Jazz and Kelechi arrived at the club.

"Oh you know, I'm just here to play hockey," Jazz replied with a smile.

Ella scoffed. "Do what you want, I don't even care."

A young man walked to the middle of the room and demanded everyone's attention as he addressed them. He asked for their suggestions for a play they would perform at the school's Christmas party. Only Kelechi and Ella raised their hands and after going through the scripts they gave him, he finally agreed on Kelechi's.

"It's not fair, he picked her script over mine although mine is great," Ella whined.

"He obviously picked hers cause it's better," A girl who was standing next to her said.

"Mind your business, she wasn't talking to you," Titilayo snapped at the girl and Ella smirked.

They were all given their roles in the play and rehearsed for a while before the bell rang and the drama coordinator dismissed them.

"I'm so happy he chose my script and I get to be the director of the play," Kelechi said as she and Jazz went back to the dorm.

"I'm so happy I didn't get a part in the stupid play," Jazz said.

"You straight up refused to take part in anything and don't call my play stupid," Kelechi said.

The morning bell rang and all the girls groaned as they slowly got out of bed. Jazz, on the other hand, didn't even move. Kelechi sighed and went over to her bed, rocking her. Jazz got up sleepily and lazily got ready for school. Kelechi and Ronke literally had to drag her to class.

"I'm sick of this school," Jazz whined.

"You haven't even spent a week here and you're already sick of it. Please endure cause you have two more terms to be here, that is, if you get yourself into trouble," Kelechi joked.

"Easy for you to say Kel, you love school," Ronke said and Jazz looked at Kelechi surprisedly.

"I never knew people who love school existed," Jazz said and Ronke laughed.

"Alright, now that you've had your fun let's go to class," Kelechi said and they went to their classes.

By noon the bell rang for sports activities and the students went to their dorms to change into their sports wears. Kelechi and Ronke led Jazz to the football field where some other girls in their class were. The boys were usually the ones playing on the field but since the girls had a match to prepare for, they left the field for them and went to do some other activities.

"I don't know if you've noticed, but I'm not a fan of sports." Jazz scoffed.

"You have to participate in an activity during sports, it's compulsory," Kelechi said, stretching.

"Man, is everything compulsory in this school?" Jazz asked.

"If you don't like football there are other things you can participate in. There's basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, skipping ropes and we also have board games like scramble, ludo, snakes and ladders, chess and draughts. Sports time is so fun," Ronke said excitedly.

"But we have to be here to practice cause we have a match against SS2 next month and we can't let our juniors beat us," Kelechi added.

"Whatever," Jazz said.

"Do you know how to play football?" Ronke asked her.

"I guess."

"I'm just asking cause you look so delicate, I don't think we should add you to the team, you may break," Ronke joked and Kelechi nudged her playfully.

A pretty young lady in a tank top, leggings and trainers walked up to the girls with a football in her hand.

"Everyone, Miss Toke is here," A girl announced and all the girls kept quiet.

"Who is she?" Jazz asked.

"Our class teacher and the best teacher in this school. She's so cool," Kelechi replied.

Miss Toke spoke to them and joked with them and also motivated them to be focused on winning the match. She requested for those who knew how to play and then put them in two teams for their practice. The rest of the girls just sat on the benches. Jazz, Ella, Titi and Grace were on the same team while Kelechi, Ronke and Zainab were on the same team.

"Oh no Ronke, Jazz is on the same team with those mean girls," Kelechi said.

"Relax, Jazz is capable of protecting herself," Ronke assured her.

"Girls, over here," Miss Toke called them.

They went out to the field and Princess showed up in a referee's uniform. "You guys said I shouldn't play cause I'm fat, so if I can't play at least I can referee," She said, smiling, and blew her whistle. "Heads or tail?" She asked with a coin in her hand.

Jazz and Ella replied simultaneously. "Heads."

"Who said you could answer for us?" Ella snapped.

"I'm the team leader here so don't ask me pointless questions," Jazz snapped back.

"And who made you the leader?"

"Me."

Ella scoffed. "I'm the best player on this team so I have to be the leader."

"I may not be the best player but I'm an amazing leader."

"Can you two please stop fighting or else I'll remove you from the team!" Miss Toke warned and they kept quiet.

The goal keepers went to their various posts while the rest of the players assumed their positions. Jazz's team was on the losing side with the other team three goals ahead. Princess blew the whistle for half time and they went to have some water and glucose.

"What are you doing? You don't even know how to play football, you're making us lose," Ella said to Jazz.

"If you're so good at it why don't you make us win?" Jazz retorted.

"That is not the point here."

"I don't care what the point is," Jazz said and walked away.

"Who does she think she is? I'll show her," Ella said to her friends and they nodded in approval.
