CHAPTER 39
Jazz thought Miss Toke was going to take her to the staff room for questioning, but she was surprised when she led her outside. They had barely walked for ten seconds before Jazz asked, "Are we taking a walk or something?"
"Kind of. You need to clear your head so you can be in the right frame of mind to answer my questions."
"I'll only be in the right frame of mind if I can get some alcohol."
Miss Toke smiled. "Luckily for you, we don't have that around here."
"Too bad," Jazz scoffed.
"You know, Jazz, as your class teacher, I am responsible for all of you. So if you can't tell me the truth, we can't know who's wrong and who's right, and we won't be able to give Mrs Okoye a proper account of what happened to her daughter."
"Her daughter knows very well what happened to her so I don't get why you guys are bothering me so much. I already told you I didn't push the girl." Jazz was exasperated from answering the same questions over again.
"I believe you," Miss Toke said. "I just wanted to be sure I wasn't doing the wrong thing."
"I'm always right, duh."
Miss Toke chuckled and put her arm around Jazz's shoulders. "I will talk to Mrs William. She believes you too, but she's just trying to find a way to pacify Ella's mum."
"Whatever."
"You can go back to your dormitory now, you don't want to get in trouble with your dorm captain," Miss Toke told her as they headed towards the girls' block.
"Don't worry about that, we're on good terms." Jazz smiled.
Miss Toke seemed very pleased at the revelation. "I see you've made quite a number of friends here," she remarked.
Jazz shrugged. "Just a few."
"That's good nonetheless, I'm glad you're adjusting well."
"Wish I could be as happy as you are," Jazz deadpanned.
"I know you are," Miss Toke said, smiling. She went in the direction of the staff quarters as Jazz headed off to her dorm. Before Jazz could enter the building, someone gently pulled her from behind and led her away from the girls' block.
"Hey! What do you think you're doing?" Jazz almost yelled.
"I don't want to be seen around the female dorms otherwise I'll be in trouble," Mitchel replied.
"I mean, what do you think you're doing touching me?"
"I'm sorry." He instantly let go of her hand and stopped walking. "I was waiting for you to come back to your dorm so I could talk with you. Forgive me for my manner of approach."
"Screw you, I don't have time for this, and I certainly don't have time to talk to you. I have homework to do."
Jazz turned to walk away but Mitchel held her arm, stopping her from moving any further and causing her to glare at him until he let her go.
"We're having exams so we don't have any homework, Jazz."
"Whatever," Jazz scoffed, determined to walk out of the conversation. Mitchel was persistent, and he followed her until she paused a little distance from her dormitory. "Would you stop following me?"
"Would you hear me out, please?" He pleaded.
Jazz heaved an exasperated sigh and turned around to face him. "You really hurt me, you know."
"I'm know, and I'm sorry."
"Okay," Jazz said and continued walking.
"Okay? What does that mean?"
"It means, okay." Jazz shrugged and went into her dorm building. Mitchel didn't follow her this time. He would be severely punished if he was found anywhere near the female dorms without good reason. Jazz looked back and saw that he was still standing there, watching her. She smiled and shook her head as she went upstairs to her room. She knew very well that he was sorry, and she had forgiven him. She just didn't want to make it easy for him.
As she got to the landing at the top of the stairs, she was met by Zainab who looked a little worried. "Is everything alright? I saw you with Miss Toke," she said.
Smiling weakly, Jazz replied, "Everything's fine, Z, thanks."
"I'm sorry that you had to take the blame about what happened to Ella."
"Well, shit happens." Jazz excused herself before Zainab could say anything else and went straight to her room. Zainab could only stare after her with empathy.
As Jazz entered her room, she was met by Kelechi and Ronke changing out of their uniforms. At the sound of the door banging shut, they whipped their heads up to stare at Jazz who stomped to her bed. Exchanging knowing looks, they followed Jazz and mimicked her actions as she sat down.
"What did Miss Toke say?" Ronke inquired and Kelechi nudged her. "What?" She retorted, "Ought we to know?"
"She didn't say much," Jazz said, "just that she and Mrs William believe me, but they are having a hard time convincing Ella's mum."
"That girl sure is a bitch for putting herself in harm's way just to frame you," Ronke spat.
"She can maim herself for all I care," Jazz scoffed and proceded to take off her uniform.
"By the way, before you guys came in, Somto came here looking for Jazz," Amarachi who had been quiet the whole time, informed them.
"Why?" Kelechi asked.
Amarachi shrugged. "I don't know, she probably wanted to know what transpired between her and Ella, just like everyone else."
"I can't believe this. This kind of thing has never happened in this school before," Kelechi noted.
"Can we just go and study for our exam and stop talking about this?" Ronke said and they left for the library together.

"I'm not going to ask you about what happened between you and Ella because I know you're telling the truth. Ella is such a dirty liar," Princess said to Jazz as they studied in the library.
"Gee thanks," Jazz responded, wondering why she was always stuck with Princess and Abu. Kelechi and Ronke had sat together but she decided to sit alone. Unfortunately for her, her seatmates came into the library and decided to sit with her. She had contemplated changing seats, but the library was crowded - something that wasn't new during exams - and there was no way she could sit alone, so she chose to just sit where she was.
"When you're in the library, you shouldn't talk, and if you must talk, then you should lower your voice," Abu said to them, his voice was a whisper but it had a warning undertone. He was seriously studying his Literature note because he knew that if he didn't study hard, there was every possibility of him failing the exam. Literature was his worst subject, and it was not just because he hated reading.
"You're talking, aren't you?" Princess retorted, eyeing him coyly.
"But I'm not talking as loudly as you are," Abu whispered back. Just then, the librarian, a short, plump, and fair skinned young lady walked behind them and stopped.
"I knew I was hearing voices from around here. Abu, if you don't know how to use the library then you might as well read in your room," she said, and with one final warning glare, continued walking round the library in search of students who only visited the library just to appear serious when they were mostly there for gisting or snacking.
"Don't talk to me again!" Abu whispered to Princess.
"I wasn't," she smiled, before returning her attention back to her books. When it was 4pm, which was the closing time of the library, the librarian requested the students to leave so she could lock up and rest for the day. Their pleas for her to leave the library open for another hour or half an hour fell on deaf ears as she encouraged them to go and study in their classes or rooms.
Jazz wasted no time in hurrying out of the library so she could avoid contact with other people, and therefore, avoid more stupid questions from them. It wasn't that she didn't know what to say to them, she just was exasperated from all the talking, and repeating the same things over again. She was done with it. However, her efforts to avoid people were futile as someone grabbed her hand just as she stepped out of the school building.
"What the hell, Mitchel?" Jazz screamed, as the person pulled her to the side of the building where no one could see them - unless they were looking for something that was not lost. Jazz's anger was replaced with surprise when she realised that the person who grabbed her was none other than Somto. I mean, the two had nothing to do with each other, and the only relationship they had was that they were in the same dorm and the same class. "What do you want now?" Jazz hissed, preparing her mind to walk away if Somto asked her another stupid question.
Somto looked this way and that way to make sure no one was eavesdropping on them, then said, "I want to talk to you about Ella."
