CHAPTER 23

Jazz and Kelechi assisted Ronke to her class as they held onto her hands so she wouldn't fall. Ronke thought that it was silly for them to help her walk since she's already recovered but it was two against one. When they got to the front of the classroom, Ronke thanked them for their help.

"Thank you so much, I don't know what I would've done without you two, really," She said as she hugged them.

"Don't mention," Kelechi replied sweetly but Jazz said, "You don't need to tell me how helpless you'd be if you didn't have me in your life." Kelechi and Ronke chuckled.

Divine spotted them from inside the class and came out to meet them. "Hello Jazz, Kelechi. Hey babe," he said and tried to hug Ronke but she turned away, avoiding contact with him. "What's wrong?" He asked.

"You, that's what's wrong," Ronke spat.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean that I don't want to hug you since you clearly don't care about me anymore."

"Wha- what are you saying babe? Of course I care about you."

"Really, then why didn't you come to check up on me while I was injured and in the sick bay? All my friends and classmates came to see me, but you never even showed up at least once."

"I did come to see you babe, but I only stayed outside and watched from the window to see if you were okay."

Jazz raised a brow questioningly and was about to say something before Kelechi stopped her while Ronke furrowed her brows. "What? That doesn't make any sense, am I some kind of atomic bomb that you can't come near me."

"No, it's not that. I just didn't want anyone to see us together and find out about our relationship."

"What's the big deal, you could've just pretended that we're friends."

"That's the problem, I can't pretend to be just friends with you, I find it hard to do so and that's why I try to stay away from you when people are around." He clutched her hands. "You know I love you babe," he added and Ronke blushed while Jazz made a disgusted face.

"I know you do and I love you too, but you just need to show me that you love me, that's all I want."

"I know, I'm sorry babe. I'll make it up to you, I promise." And that seemed to pacify Ronke as she smiled and nodded. "So, how's your ankle?"

"It's fine now, but these two wouldn't hear it. They insisted on helping me walk to class today."

Divine glanced at Jazz and Kelechi who glared back at him and he quickly looked away. "They must really care about you," he said.

"A lot," Ronke added.

"I guess now that you're not mad at me anymore, you'll let me hug you?" Divine said.

Ronke turned away from his outstretched arms. "Not here, someone may see us."

"Let's go in then," Divine said and took Ronke by the hand.

"No, I still want to talk to my friends a bit." Ronke freed her hand.

"Okay," he said and went into the classroom.

"Why did you accept his excuse of an excuse and forgive him?" Jazz asked immediately Divine was out of earshot.

"He didn't give an excuse, he just gave a reason why he couldn't come in to see me, at least he tried to make sure I was okay. And why wouldn't I forgive him, you know I like him," Ronke replied.

"And that's why you were too blind to see that his excuse was useless and still chose to forgive him."

"His reason was valid okay, I know how he gets when he's around me so I can't blame him for not being able to act as if we're just friends."

"Still, I think it's a dumb excuse for not visiting your girlfriend when she's hurt. I don't like him." Jazz folded her arms.

"Come on, Jazz, don't judge him before you actually get to know him, he's a really nice guy," Ronke said and turned to Kelechi. "Kel."

"Don't look at me, you know I never liked him. And I have to agree with Jazz, the excuse that he gave for not coming to see you is pathetic," Kelechi said and turned her face.

"I don't want to dwell on that, it's in the past now. See you guys later." Ronke went into the class and immediately, Divine went over to give her a hug before settling himself on her desk. Kelechi sighed.

"I don't know what she sees in him anyway," She said.

"Me too, but I guess, love is blind and that's why she can't see through his obvious lie."

"The way Mitchel can't see through your obvious deceit?"

Jazz shot Kelechi a glare, making her flinch a little. "What?"

"I mean, you're deceiving Mitchel into thinking you like him and he likes you so much that he can't see it, even if everyone else can," Kelechi explained.

"Please, stop. I don't wanna talk about that." Jazz groaned.

"Seriously, don't you think you've played with the boy's emotions long enough. You know, I feel really bad for him and how he's going to feel when he finds out about this. I think you should end this charade, Jazz. It's enough," Kelechi said.

"No it's not cause it'll only be enough when I say it's enough to be enough," Jazz replied.

"Okay, but make sure you end this before he finds out himself cause it won't be good if he does."

"Ugh, you're such a mom," Jazz joked as she and Kelechi went to their class.

"Jazz! Just the girl we were talking about!" Abu said as soon as Jazz walked to her seat.

"You didn't have to tell her that we were talking about her," Princess whispered to him.

"Stop whispering, she already knows we were talking about her," Abu said and Princess shook her head with an amused smile on her lips.

"So what were you saying about me, oh my lovely neighbours?" Jazz asked sweetly as she sat on her desk which was in between Abu's and Princess'.

"Nothing bad." Abu chuckled. "I don't do gossip unlike some people," he said and glanced at Princess.

"Very funny Abu," Princess responded dryly.

"Anyway, we were talking about how awesome you were on the field," Abu said.

"Aww thank you guys." Jazz pretended to blush, making Abu and Princess laugh.

"But seriously though, you claimed you didn't know how to play football but then you went ahead and scored our winning goal!" Princess chirped excitedly.

Jazz proudly flicked her hair. "I have to admit, I was pretty awesome," she said with a smirk.

"What is so awesome about what you did on Tuesday? All you did was score one goal, it's not a big deal." Ella scoffed from behind Jazz.

"But it's more awesome than sitting and doing nothing," Jazz replied without looking back.

"Come on, Ella, Jazz really tried oh. For an oyinbo to play football in this our hot weather, do you think it's easy, and you're saying it's not a big deal," Abu said to Ella who folded her arms.

"I know she tried, I'm just tired of everyone singing her praises because of just that one goal that she scored," Ella replied.

"You're not tired darling, you're jealous," Jazz stated. This time, she turned to face Ella. "And understandably so," she added before turning back.

"You can say whatever you want to say but that doesn't change the fact that you're not awesome," Ella quipped.

"If I think I'm awesome and everyone thinks I'm awesome, then what does your opinion matter." Jazz turned her head a little so that she was not fully facing Ella.

Ella's comeback was disrupted when the assembly bell rang and Jazz swiftly got down from her desk. "Come on guys, let's go," she said to Abu and Princess who stared surprisedly at her.

"Since when did you go to assembly without first being told how important it is for you to go?" Abu asked jokingly and Jazz shrugged. "I guess I just kinda realized it's important I attend the assembly every school day," she replied.

"That's an impressive change, usually we're the ones who force you to go to assembly and sometimes drag you when you're too busy fixing your already perfect hair and touching up your perfectly-applied makeup," Kelechi said from her seat and Jazz just chuckled as they left the class together.

"You know what, I've never met anyone who loves acting as much as he does. I'm surprised he chose a different career path than acting," Jazz said to Kelechi and Ronke while Amarachi listened as she folded hers and Fatima's clothes that had just dried. Jazz was telling them about how her rehearsal with Mitchel was going and how excited the boy always was when he was acting or teaching someone to act.

"Yeah, I wonder what made him decide to want to become a doctor when he obviously loves acting. He has played a part in every school play ever since I came here,"  Kelechi added.

"Maybe he just loves saving people's lives." Jazz shrugged.

"Or maybe he's being forced to become a doctor, you know how parents can be," Ronke said and they all turned to look at her. "What? I'm just saying."

"Well, that doesn't matter anyway. What he chooses to do with his life is entirely his business."

"Of course it doesn't matter, because it's not about you. If it was, then I'm sure you'd go on for ages," Kelechi said to Jazz who made a face at her.

"You people should leave Jazz alone, if she only wants to talk about herself then let her. After all, who doesn't like talking about themselves," Amarachi chipped in jokingly.

"Thank you!" Jazz spread her arms out to Amarachi and giggled before falling on her bed.

"You seem so much friendlier now," Kelechi commented.

Jazz frowned. "I don't remember being tagged as an unfriendly monster."

"I didn't say you were." Kelechi laughed. "What I'm saying is that you're less bossy and more cooperative."

Jazz pretended to muse. "Isn't that a good thing?"

"It is." Kelechi smiled.

Someone knocked on the door and the girls stared at it and exchanged glances before Jazz yelled, "Come in!"

The door opened and a petite, timid girl slowly entered the room looking worried. "Amara," she said quietly and nearly out of breath.

Jazz, Kelechi and Ronke stared at her because she wasn't familiar to them but it seemed Amarachi knew her because she went over to the girl, held her hands and asked, "What's wrong, why do you look so upset?"

"It's Fatima," the girl replied.

"What? What happened to her?"

"I don't know, but Mrs William has called you to her office. Obviously, something is not okay, I could sense it when she spoke to me."

On hearing this, Amarachi instantly left the room, ignoring her roommates' calls and questions. They wondered what the girl had said to make her rush out of the room that way but before they could question the girl, she also left the room in a hurry, following Amarachi as she sped down the stairs, and in a couple of seconds, sped out of the dorm. Amarachi wondered what could be wrong with her best friend that was so urgent for her to be called to the principal's office.
