CHAPTER 16

"What are you doing here?" Ronke asked just as Ella was about to search the wastebasket.

Ella and her crew froze on seeing Ronke enter the room, they didn't expect to see her there because just few minutes ago, she was eating in the cafeteria and they didn't think that she would leave for anything.

"I said what are you doing here?" She asked again, increasing her voice.

"I was just looking for something..." Ella trailed off when her eyes met Ronke's glare.

"You have never been to this room before so how come you are looking for something of yours here?" Ronke folded her arms.

"I must have mistaken this room for Somto's room, no wonder I couldn't find my pen."

Ronke raised her brow. "You were seriously looking for a pen during lunchtime? You could've just asked her for it."

"She told me to go to her room and get it and I really wanted to copy the notes I missed during the first and second periods so—"

"I don't need your flimsy explanations, just get out." Ronke stepped aside from the door, gesturing for them to leave.

Titi and Grace slowly walked out but Ella purposely toppled the wastebasket on her way out, littering the floor with its contents. She gasped and used her leg to search the trash while pretending to use the leg to push it towards the wastebasket. She narrowed her eyes when she realized that there was no single bottle of beer in the trash. Looking up, she was met with a deadpan stare from Ronke and irritated looks from her friends.

She chuckled. "Hehe, I didn't mean to, it was an accident. I mean, I almost fell—"

"Just. Get. Out," Ronke spat and Ella left with her friends.

"I can't believe there were no bottles in the wastebasket. Where could they have hidden them?" Ella asked her confused friends when they had gone to their room.

"I don't know but I still don't understand why you had to play with their trash," Titi said, her face scrunched.

"I was trying to find the evidence. The two of you were supposed to distract her while I was doing that and not let her stare at me like I'm deranged! And you, Gracey, you were supposed to be on the lookout. How could you let her come into the room and catch us redhanded? What if she decides to report us to matron," Ella complained and her friends frowned at her.

"Hold on Ells, the door was closed so how on earth did you expect me to know when someone was coming?"

"You have ears, don't you?"

"I am not a dog, please."

"Whatever. The mission was thwarted and we came back empty handed. But that doesn't mean I'll give up so easily. I still have to get back at Jazz for being all lovey dovey with Mitchel on Saturday."

"Why don't you just forget about Mitchel and find some other guy that will actually like you back. That boy clearly doesn't seem interested at all," Titi said and Ella shot her a hard glare.

"Don't ever say that again. How can you ask me to forget about someone I've been in love with for three years!"

"Fine, keep on loving him but don't say I didn't tell you when he falls in love with Jazz or someone else other than you."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"No offence, but, Mitchel doesn't like you at all. He even seems more interested in Jazz by the looks of it so please do yourself a favour and stop wasting your precious time on him."

"He is only interested in her because she's throwing herself all over him. If I can just shower him with more love then he will see how much I love him and eventually love me back," Ella said and grinned to herself.

"Girl, you are love struck. I have nothing more to say to you," Titi finally said and raised her hands in surrender.

"Just you wait and see. When Mitchel finally confesses his love for me, I will be the one with the last laugh."

"If you are done daydreaming, can we please go and have our lunch before the break is over," Grace said and they left for the cafeteria.

"You mean Ella actually came to our room to look for the bottles of beer?" Kelechi asked as Ronke returned to the cafeteria.

"Yes," Ronke replied.

"How did you even know they were going there?"

Ronke shrugged. "I was just feeling suspicious about what Ella said and had a feeling they were going to go there as there was no one in the room. They had no idea that we had already disposed of the bottles in the wastebin outside." Ronke chuckled.

"What are you girls talking about?" Abu asked.

"Nothing that concerns you," Ronke retorted.

"Calm down na, we're not fighting."

"Just mind your business."

"Don't mind her, you know she doesn't like it when people meddle," Kelechi said to Abu.

"It's okay, I know that Ronke has her own wahala," Abu said and Ronke just rolled her eyes, not wanting to exchange words with him.

During sports, Jazz and her female classmates gathered at the football field ready to practise for their upcoming match. Their class teacher, Miss Toke, addressed them as usual before they began the practice match.

"Alright girls, I need you to put your all into today's practice because your match is drawing near. I have seen those girls practising and they mean business. You don't want them to beat you, do you?" The girls shook their heads.

"Good. So far you girls have been doing very well and practising very hard, I believe you will win this match." They cheered.

"Here, Miss Toke," Kelechi said as she handed Miss Toke her bag.

Taking the bag from Kelechi, she said, "Thank you dear. Now go and take your place on your team."

"Jazz, since you don't know how to play football and are not even willing to play, please do not distract or fight with those that are playing," Miss Toke said to Jazz who was sitting on the bench along with some other girls, drinking a bottle of water.

"Whatever, it's not like I wanna get involved with whatever it is you're doing," She said and put the bottle down, folding her arms and crossing her legs.

"Today I will be picking our team's goalkeeper for the match between Kelechi and Zainab. Both of you are very good so I will be watching you closely as you keep for your teams in this practice. Also, I want you all to bear in mind that this is just a practice match so I don't want any fighting or else," Miss Toke warned and they nodded their heads in comprehension.

Before they started playing, Miss Toke opened her bag to get her phone and was shocked when she couldn't find it. She put her hand in every corner of the bag and even emptied its contents on the bench next to her but still couldn't find it. "Kelechi!" She called and everyone stopped what they were doing to look at her.

"Did you find a phone on my desk when I asked you to go and get my bag?" Miss Toke asked.

"No ma, I didn't see any phone," Kelechi replied meekly.

"Then where could my phone be? I kept it in my bag before leaving the teachers' office."

"I'm sure if you search the teachers' office you'll find it, maybe you left it somewhere and just forgot," Kelechi suggested.

"All right, I will go and check. Although I'm very sure that I kept it in my bag," Miss Toke said and went to the teachers' office to search for her phone.

"What are you looking for?" Miss Linda asked.

"My phone, it went missing."

"What? When?"

"Today! Just few minutes ago."

"Let me help you look for it." Miss Linda started searching under the desks.

The other teachers also joined in the search and still didn't find the missing phone.

"There is no way my phone could've disappeared just like that," Miss Toke said to herself as she continued searching desperately for her phone.

The news soon got to Mrs Williams who called for an assembly to announce that a teacher's phone had been stolen, asking anyone who knew about it or knew who was behind it to speak up. The students kept quiet as no one seemed to know how the phone got missing.

"Fine then. Since no one wants to say anything, I guess we'll just have to search everyone until we find the phone and if we do, the culprit will be severely punished. So you better talk now or face dire consequences when you are caught," Mrs Williams announced and when no one said anything, she dismissed the assembly.

Immediately after the assembly, the search began. Female teachers searched the female dorms while male teachers searched the male dorms. Each room was searched and even the wardrobes and bags were searched.

When it got to Jazz's room turn, they were asked to stand aside while a teacher frisked them and another searched the room thoroughly but making sure to not mess it up. She searched Jazz, Ronke, Amarachi and Fatima's bags and when she got to Kelechi's bag, she found the phone inside.
