Chapter 7
I stare at the written words, eyes wide. I drop the book, and it hits the floor with a loud thud. Noah runs in, and asks something, but I didn't quite hear. My mind felt fuzzy, like I was going to pass out again. I flick myself in the head, and everything is clear again.
"What happened? Jemma?" Noah asks, snapping in my face.
"Uh, yeah?" I ask.
"You dropped your stupid book. I thought you collapsed or something. Don't do that." he says. "What's in that book of yours, anyway? That you dropped it on the ground?"
"Um, nothing. It's fine. Go back to whatever you were watching. Uh, football! Um, go, whatever team is better!" I say.
"You make no sense sometimes." he says.
"Yeah, you know me, Miss Weirdo! Shoo!" I say, laying down, reaching on the floor for my helmet.
"What? Your already going back in? I thought you were going to sleep first!" he says.
"Changed my mind!" I say.
Noah grabs the headset before I could, and pulls it away.
"You're going to die at this rate!" he says, fighting against my raging fist.
"Give it back! I need to get back! You don't understand! I have a higher chance of being killed here than being in there!" I yell.
"How?! That doesn't make any sense, Jemma!" he yells.
I fall on my knees. I don't have enough energy to keep fighting.
"Please. I know you don't understand, but you have to give me my helmet back. I feel like my friends in there could be killed." I say.
"But isn't it just a game?" he asks.
"I have this gut feeling. And I'm going to go with it." I say, holding back tears.
He hands it down to me. "Be back in a day, or I'll unplug it." he says.
"Fine. But if it's a second before twenty- four hours, I'll kill you." I say, plugging the system back in.
"Bye." he says.
"Bye."
I log back into the game, standing in front of the door. Laye was eating something in the kitchen, and Elle was cleaning dishes.
I run outside, not bothering to say hello to them or anything. I run out the doors, down the cobblestone path. I run a shortcut through an alley, and turned a curb. Standing there as always was the building of secrets. I run inside, and Char sat on a chair, as if waiting for me to barge in.
"Hello." she says, smiling. The kind of smile where it's obviously told it's forced.
"Tell me what's going on. My world and this world are to separate things. Leave it alone!" I yell.
"Actually, they're very alike. You see, you're illegal both here, and there. Neither world wants you." she says.
"What?! That makes no sense! I grew up there!" I yell.
"Sh, stop yelling. you could be disturbing the agents in their meeting." she says, pointing at a door.
I storm over there, my sneakers smashing the tile flooring. I have a familiar sensation. It was a feeling of terrified and furious. My power, the one that no one else possessed. This time, I could see it though. Vines wrapping around the victorian door handles, pulling the door open. I could see the agents, dressed in fancy black suits, most likely talking about me.
"There she is!" one of them screams.
"We're not going to make it!" another yells.
I was ready. My feet couldn't touch the ground. I couldn't feel my air on my shoulders. Gravity no longer existed. I was going to drop it. The building. I had large rose bushes underneath, ready to impale. But something from behind sent a shiver up my spine. I whip around, ready to face whatever it was.
It was a small girl. She was wearing a cream colored dress, and had the darkest of red eyes. There was a cross symbol inside each one. Her teeth were no longer sharp as knives, as they had been the previous time.
I suddenly felt my hair fall back to my shoulders, and the building was back on its foundation. I look around me, and I was back in the room I first came into. The doors were shut, enclosing all sound the agents were making.
There was no sign of the little girl anywhere, just Char, sitting in a chair, as if waiting for me to return.
"Hello." she says.
I walk away.
Apparently she hadn't expected that, so she stood up, but sat back down, a confused expression on her face.
No one had remembered when I went ballistic on them. I don't know if this is a good or bad thing, but somehow I got it in my mind that that small, little girl was trying to help me.
Walking back the long way home, I see Laye and Elle running up to me. I couldn't quite see them, I just knew they were there.
"Do you know?" I ask.
"Know what?" Elle and Laye ask, nervously.
That's what I figured they would ask. They are just like the rest of the people here. Liars.
"You saw what happened on the tv, didn't you? Don't lie, I know you did." I say.
"Yeah, we did." Elle says.
"Sorry." Laye adds.
"No one else remembers anything. Char was confused because she thought I came in and went out. I have no idea what's going on." I say, scratching the back of my head.
"You know just as much as we do." Elle says.
"This makes no sense. I just want to play the game. Is that too much to ask? I paid three hundred dollars for the headset, just to be told I can't be here. Does that make any sense to you guys?" I ask.
"That's what we're fighting for. Let's ignore the government for now, but if something serious happens, we can get involved." Laye says.
"Yeah, that should be easier. We don't play our card until they play theirs." Elle says.
I don't know what was so riled up in me when they said that. What I felt like was a jerk, for thinking that they were against me. But now, if I had the choice to go back, I would never had agreed. Maybe, they would- never mind.
