Chapter 21
Ro walks slightly slower than us. The sky is pitch black now, but Ro brought a flashlight, explaining that he was "prepared for anything". He shines it inanimate objects, thinking they're monsters or something, but then quickly shines back on the path.
"Have you ever been out this late?" I ask him.
"No, not really. Heck, I don't even shut the lights off before I go to bed." he says.
"What a wuss." Luna says. I roll my eyes, and continue walking.
"Hey, I heard you talking to that one lady yesterday. You said there was also a boy from Earth that came here. How do you know?" she asks.
"I have no idea, honestly. I just, knew. And that was it. I haven't even met the kid yet, but I know everything about him. Well, almost everything." I answer.
"That's way weird." she says, kicking at a pebble. I just realized this was the slowest journey to the building I have ever gone.
I pause for a minute, causing Ro to run into me. "What's up?" Luna asks.
"I just remembered something." I say, hitting myself in the forehead.
"What is it?" she asks.
I take a long breath out. "The government building has been destroyed." I say.
"Seriously?!" Luna yells.
I cringe, "Yeah..."
She sighs, "That would've been nice to know beforehand."
"There has to be an HQ for them somewhere." Ro starts, "They aren't just going to let the ruler live in a random spot, free for the public to see. We have really strict rules when it comes to him."
"There's a ruler for this place?" I ask, "This is my first time learning about this."
"Yeah. No one knows anything about him, though." Aly says, then pauses. "Hey, do you know the reason the building was destroyed?"
"Well, yes and no. My sister destroyed it. She's eleven or twelve, somewhere in that range. I don't know her reasoning to do so, though. She's mysterious." I say.
Aly stops to think for a second, "Could it be that she doesn't like someone in there?"
"Well, I know her and Char don't get along too well. But I don't think she would so so far as to-"
"Revenge." a voice says.
I turn around, to see Charlotte standing there. A blurry figure stands next to her.
"What's that?" I ask, pointing towards it.
"That's my sister." Aly says.
"Why can't I see her clearly?" I ask.
"She is completely dead. Unlike your sister, who took her last breath in Unknown. That made it so she could actually live in this world." Aly says.
"True. But like your sister, I follow you two around, like a guardian angel, kinda." Luna says.
"Now that we have that all settled out, let's talk about why you destroyed the building." Aly says. I didn't fully understand, but I didn't want to interrupt.
"Well, it's a pretty long story." Charlotte says, smiling.
"We've got time. There's still three hours left until sunrise." Aly says, looking at a watch that appeared on her wrist.
"Well, okay. For starters, my name is Charlotte." she started.
It took awhile for her to finish speaking. She explained everything from the beginning. How she and I came here, how I thought it was a game, and everything down until she left me from the window. By the end of the story, Aly, Ro; who kept surprisingly quiet, and Luna were all crying and hugging me. I didn't shed a single tear.
"Uh, thanks." I say, awkwardly.
Aly looks me in the eyes, tears rolling down her cheeks. "How come you don't cry? At first, I took you as a role model. I mean, you're cool. You're pretty, you're strong, brave, everything I'm not." she whispers. "Why don't you cry about this? No one wouldn't be able to cry if their best friends died." she asks.
I look down at my shoes, where the vines wrap a little tighter around my leg. "How come Ro doesn't die in your presence?" I ask, changing the subject. Her expression looked hurt.
"I don't know. I don't know anything. Stop asking." she says, wiping tears off of her face. The rest of the walk to the remains was silent.
I walk on top of splinters of wood, looking for anything living. It was strange that no townsfolk wanted in on the buzz around here. I mean, if the white house in America or the castle in the United Kingdom was blown up, everybody and everything would be in complete chaos. But here, everything was calm.
"Don't worry, Jemma. This world was created to be calm and happy. When something disturbing happens, everyone kind of ignores it." Charlotte says, and I nod.
Aly looks up from the ground. "Hey, kid." she says, looking at Charlotte.
"Yes?" she asks.
"You need a lift? You're barefoot, and there's tons of things that could cut you." she says.
"Oh? Psh." she says, stepping on the sky.
"What the heck?" she says, raising an eyebrow. Charlotte smiles, like she enjoyed her confusion.
"Life isn't always as it seems, sweetheart." my sister says, turning around, investigating further.
"I'm just assuming your whole family is crazy at this point." Aly says, rolling her eyes. She's not too far from correct.
A few minutes pass with no sign of anything. We were about to say screw it and go home, when a faint beeping was heard in the distance.
"Wait. What's that?" I ask.
"I don't hear anything." Ro says.
"Me neither." the Luna figure says.
The beeping continued as we walked towards a room that was still intact.
"You left this room intact. Why?" I ask.
"I didn't leave any room intact. I destroyed the whole thing. This makes no sense." Charlotte says. We walk inside the empty room. There was another door on the opposite side, but it led nowhere. The beeping got louder as I walked toward the south side wall.
"Huh, It gets louder over here." I say. Charlotte comes over, and listens. Her eyes grow wide, and a bottle appears in her hand.
"Everyone, quickly, over here!" she yells, popping the cork off. Aly, Luna, and Ro run over. She splashes us with the contents, and we appear awhile away from the ruins.
That day, I watched as my little sister's skin boiled off her bones. It was a grenade that killed her in the first place. It was attached to the ceiling of the room we were in.
I don't think Aly likes me anymore. I didn't cry, whatever that means.
