Chapter 16

I open my eyes. Everything is black and white, like an old film. I look around, seeing a couch, an empty coffee cup, and a dim lamp in the corner.
"Hello? Can anyone hear me?" I ask.
"Yes. Um, this is really hard to explain," a voice like Charlotte's says, "I can let you see what happened in the past when dad dies, but I'll have to narrate it." I decided it was Charlotte.
"Okay, then." I say.
"Okay. Let's start from the beginning. When we were little, our parents weren't very strict. The only strict rule we really had was our curfew, which was exactly nine thirty. Any later, and they would start to worry."
Little me and little Charlotte run outside, though the digital clock in the kitchen read nine twenty-three. Seven minutes until curfew.
"We grew up in the middle of nowhere, Idaho. Even though it had great farmland, it was coyote rich, so no one kept agriculture. That's also why no one goes outside past sunset." she says.
We run around in the fading sun, giggling and skipping around. The sun eventually sets into night, and glowing eyes start surrounding us.
"As you can imagine, the coyotes came out. Looking back, it's a little strange that they attacked, since they usually are more afraid of you than you are of them." Charlotte says, as I cover my eyes.
"Our dad didn't know what to think. He was sad, grateful, and angry all at once. That caused him mental issues, and eventually, he had two personalities. Anger, and happiness." she says.
I watch as our dad comes home in his angry self, and abuses us. It was completely terrifying.
"We eventually locked ourselves in our room, afraid of the "monster". You could tell on his face that he wanted to change, but he couldn't." Charlotte says, her voice cracking.
"What happened to him, then?" I ask, even though I'm pretty sure I knew the answer.
She pauses for a moment, and her voice croaks a little before she spoke. "He took his own life."
Everything stops for a second. I twirl around to see if anything was happening, but it wasn't. For a moment. Then, everything was normal again.
"Mom was devastated. No one knew what happened or why though, which was strange, since it's fairly obvious now."
I noticed something now. Mom's face was all blurred out, so I couldn't see what she really looked like. Odd.
I wake up laying on the couch. Charlotte stood back facing me. She was just standing there, in mid air, almost peaceful. It was strange.
I sit up, and cross my legs across the couch. Charlotte turns around, smiling.
"Life can be so strange sometimes, can't it?" She asks, and I nod in agreement. Her smile fades into her resting face, and she opens a window. It opens with a creak, and she jumps out, letting herself fall, but she stops halfway there. she stands, letting her white dress fall back down her legs, due to gravity.
"I won't be back for awhile, okay? Will you be fine without me?" she asks.
"Yeah." I say, looking around as she disappears.
Tears roll down my cheeks, and at first, I was confused on why. They stung my eyes, but at the same time, they felt nice. I felt normal again, as I wiped them off and looked at their clear color. I fall on my knees, crying and watching the dress that Laye spent my first whole night here working on reappear. The vines on my arm and leg don't, but I guess that's fine.
The feeling I felt then was sadness. Pure, ignorant, sadness. But even though I'm still alive and perfectly fine, I still yearn to cry about it.
