Chapter 14
Charlotte
She's not doing so hot. Even after Char informed her of level three, she hasn't moved from her spot. This was my fault. If only I could've stopped time for all three of them. I hold my hand up, but instantly put it down. It's no use. Even if I did try to, she would just ignore me.
I watch as she finally transforms into her Unknown self. Vines wrap around her right arm and leg, and her dress opens up at her waist. Her tears turn red, but instead of screaming and freaking out like last time, she smiles and wipes them off.
The vines on her arm sharpen into blades, and with a lift of a finger, she shreds a wall, and slowly exits the building. I hesitate to stay, since it's a sisterly instinct of mine to comfort her.
The screen reappears again, "Okay, we're ready- oh. What happened?!" she yells.
For a moment, I thought she was talking to me. But that was crazy, because people can't see me. I turn around to see a Laye and Elle look-alike shrug.
"Sorry, we don't know, miss." they say in unison.
"Oh, crap." Char says, scratching her pixie-cut haired head.
"What is it, miss?" the Laye look-alike asks.
"Well, let me think. The most dangerous thing in existence has just escaped our captivity!" she yells, "How did she even escape in the first place!"
I look in the corner, where there was a tiny book cabinet. I walk over to it, and walk inside. I fit nicely in it, surprisingly.
"You've made it worse. You could've beat her if you had her alone, and didn't take Laye and Elle's lives." I whisper, and go back into space. Just as I expected, the workers opened the cabinet door to see who said those words. I look straight into their eyes, but they don't see me.
"What? Who are you? Where are you?!" Char yells.
"Well, I guess you could say that I have a very similar name to that of yourself. But I cannot tell any more answers about myself." I say.
"Why not? I could have you arrested immediately!" Char yells, beginning to have an irritated tone in her voice.
"You cannot arrest someone who doesn't even exist." I reply.
"You exist. You wouldn't be able to talk to me if you didn't." she says.
"You want to bet?" I ask.
She gasps, as if she was shocked I was talking so rudely talking to her. "That is no way to talk to me!" she says.
"Technically, it's your fault I don't have a physical body. So I can talk to you any way I want." I say.
"Nonsense! I haven't done anything to anyone in my whole life!" she says.
"Maybe so, but you still have the future. You can do some pretty bad things with those hands." I say.
"You are a very rude girl." she says.
"And you're a killer. I think they work hand-in-hand." I say.
"Hmph. What's the point of talking to me when you're only going to make witty remarks?" she asks.
I leave the building before she could answer. I made my way toward Jemma, which was simple to find. She was at the death board.
The death board is pretty much what you would think it is. A list of people who have died. I look over her shoulder, and don't see the names. I guess the government decided not to put them on.
"Hello again. It's been a few days." she says.
"I see you can speak to me without me having to stop time now." I reply.
"It came as an instinct." she says. I look closer, and she wears the key necklaces of her dead friends.
She turns around, and looks me directly in the eye. It's almost like looking in a mirror, how her red eyes glow, and the t shape folds along it. They were just like mine.
"Is your name Darlene?" she asks.
I smile, "No."
"Fern?"
"No."
"Angela?"
"No."
She pauses for a moment. "Charlotte."
I freeze up a little bit, afraid of my own name, I presume. "Yeah, you got it." I say, walking up to a tree branch of the birch tree we were talking by.
"Do you have a name for your power?" she asks.
"Time control. It's pretty boring, huh? Well, like yours, I'm the only one who possesses it. So I decided I'll just go with that. I can walk on air, time travel, stop time, and go into a time portal, which makes my visible self exit, but I can still see everything. You can see me, even though I'm in the portal, so it must be an Unknown thing." I say. "Your turn, tell me about yours."
"Well, I can sprout any kind of plant I want, but my special is vines. They're the easiest to control, and I can make the blades at the end of them as dull or sharp as I want." she says, sprouting a fairly large flower from under her feet, making her able to look me in the eye, but then goes back to the ground.
"You know, it's kind of ironic." I say,
"What is?" she asks.
"That you named your group Dyed Sky. It's a holiday for me, you know." I say.
"How so?" she asks.
"Well, the day I was shot and killed, in the same moment, the Dyed Sky came to take us selected two to Unknown, where we would be illegally sent here. Actually, you were the one who was supposed to die, so you would end up with my power, but things didn't really go as Char had planned." I say.
"I'm sorry, I can't follow the Char part." I say.
"It's kind of a little hard to explain, so I'll put it simply. Soon, Char will force me to go back to the past, and order me to kill you when we were swinging at the park. You are stronger than me, so I kill myself instead." I say.
"Hm. Then how are you still alive?" she asks.
I smile, "Even I don't know that."
"Is this place a planet, like Earth?" she asks.
"No, it isn't." I answer.
"Are we human?" she asks.
"Not anymore. Technically, we never have been, though." I say.
"Does Mom still exist?" she asks.
"Time keeps repeating on Earth since we have died, starting from when you were born. Who knows how many times I've actually killed myself in parallel universes." I say.
"Wow, that's a lot to take in at once." she says.
I smile slightly, but then frown, "What happens next?"
"I don't know. I can't just log out anymore. Wait! If I can't log out, then what life was I living on Earth?!" she asks.
"It was a fake. To be completely truthful, that was probably just your imagination as you were being transported here. As for when you logged off while in the world, I have not a single clue." I say.
"I guess that's good enough answer for me." she says.
I was about to change the subject, but when I looked down from the tree, she was sleeping.
