Chapter 27

Charlotte
Falling, falling. There's a figure next to me, falling just the same. The green of the treetops below inch closer and closer. I feel myself scream, as I regain full consciousness.
"Malachi! Wake up!" I scream, but he still falls as graceful as a sack of potatoes. Shit, shit, shit. Okay. I focus my thoughts on summoning him to wake up, and three seconds later, I'm hanging on a tree branch, one hand holding the branch, the other keeping a screaming Malachi from falling an extra twelve feet to his death.
"Holy crap! I thought I was dead! I literally just watched my whole life flash before my eyes! I remember where I misplaced my favorite watch!" He yells.
"That's great. But if you could grab onto something before the branch breaks, that'd be great too." I say, breathing quickly. He pulls himself onto a different branch, and I pull myself up.
"That was insane. Is that, like, a normal thing? I know you guys are a little different, but I didn't know how different. How did you do that, anyways? Wait! Where is everyone?" He asks.
"I know this is your first time teleporting, but even Laye doesn't ask this many stupid questions. How is Elle into you? I thought she was supposed to be the smart one." I say, leaning against the tree. I was unusually tired.
"Rude. Well where are we?" He asks.
"The forest of Anita. I used to come here to de-stress."
"I think I know what you mean. It seems very relaxing here. Funny I've never been to this part of Jaylemm." He says.
"Wh- are you an idiot? We- ugh, never mind. Just, shut up for a second." I say, taking deep breaths.
"Are you okay?" He asks.
"Yeah, I'll be good. You seem pretty okay for someone who almost died," and that's when the pieces fit together: my loss of energy, how he wouldn't wake up right away, and finally: how teleporting through dimensions can be deadly for the normal person. And I had totally forgot.
"Holy sh-butts!" I yell.
"Hey; watch your language missy." He says, chuckling.
I knew I had- abilities. I had them since I was sent to Jaylemm, I just didn't know the extent of them. I could make people feel different emotions, wake them up, and on occasion make them do things under my control. Make them a human puppet. I usually didn't, though. I usually only use my abilities on inanimate objects, and even then it drains a lot of energy.
But bringing someone back from the dead?
I sigh outwardly, trying to even out my breathing.
"Seriously though, are you alright kid? You look pretty pale." He asks.
"Uh, yeah. I'm fine. Here, grab my hand." I say, reaching down to him. He takes it, and I focus my thoughts on the ground.
I scream in pain as we hit the ground. "Uh, I don't think you should do that anymore." Malachi says, leaning me against the tree. Blood starts gushing out of his nose.
"You're bleeding." I say, through gasps of air.
"Oh, yeah, I can tell." He says, plugging his nose.
"We- we need to leave here. Jemma and the others- we need to find them." I say, holding my stomach, feeling the fast rhythm of my breathing.
"Charlotte, you're crying." He says while switching hands, and wiping the blood on his jeans.
I wipe across my cheek, a streak of crimson blood coming off onto my hand.
"Huh." I say, holding my hand in view of the sunlight. The blood glimmers.
Sleep. Endless sleep.
