Chapter 25

Elle
I open my eyes, and I'm in my parents' mansion. I re-teleport to my college dorm, which smelled of fruit. My phone sat on my bedside table, where I quickly pick it up and dial Willa's number. Someone picks up at the third ring.
"Hey Elle." Willa says.
"Oh my god! Hi Willa! What are you doing?" I ask, my heart racing.
"I'm at work, weirdo. Aren't you supposed to be in class?"
"I skipped. Where are the twins?" I ask.
"They're at the sitter's." She pauses, and I hear voices in the background. "My lunch period is almost over Elle, what do you need?"
"Oh; nothing. I was just checking in. Seeing how you were doing. Where's Joe?" I ask.
"Josephine? Probably at school. Like you should be." She says. "Look, I've gotta go. I'll talk to you later."
"Okay, love you." I say, but she had already hung up.
I call Joe, but it goes straight to voicemail. The clock reads one o'clock. Two hours. I run out of the school, and got in my car. I drive to her school as it hit three o'clock. I got out of the car, into the school. The bell rings, and students flood the halls. I look around for her white blonde hair, pushing around students. And there she stood, talking with a group of girls around her locker. She spots me, and cocks an eyebrow.
"Elle? What are you doing here?" She asks.
"Joe! You wanna go get a milkshake with me?" I ask, as the group of friends around her give me weird looks. I'm a head taller than all of them.
"I actually have plans, so I can't." She says, closing her locker.
"I drove two hours up here to hang out with my little sister, so that's going to happen." I say.
"No, it's not." A boy walks up behind her with a big winter jacket.
"Joe, I've got your order in." He says, before looking at me.
"Shut up, Derick!" She says.
"What order? Is this your boyfriend? What's going on?" That's when I notice the dark circles around her reddened eyes, messily covered up by foundation a shade lighter than her skin.
"Josephine Martin!" I bring my voice down, "are you high? In school?"
"No, I am not." She says, breaking eye contact.
"I don't believe you for a second! I can't believe you would do that! Do you know how badly in trouble you could get? And what about your health? You could-"
"Elle, you need to leave. Now." She says, eyes welling with tears.
I left.
