Chapter 17

Laye
I wake up on a dirt floor with my wrists and ankles binded with handcuffs. I look around, the walls were made with brick, and one of them were blocked with metal bars. I'm in prison. Great.
In the cell across from me sat Elle, who had her wrists cuffed and she had a dark blue bruise around her eye. She lie unconscious. My memory settled back, and a huge headache came with it.
I cry out in pain, and I carefully touch the roof of my head. There was a patch of hair that was all matted down. I draw my hand back, and it was crimson with blood.
"Laye?" A voice says. I look over to Elle, who still sat asleep.
"No, you moron. It's Serenity, not your conscious. I'm in the cell next to Elle's."
"What do you want?" I ask, though the way it sounded it was more of a statement.
"Are you okay?" She asks. She seemed genuinely interested.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Pretty sure I only have a minor concussion. I'm lucky I didn't lose all my blood in the process." I say.
"Stop being sarcastic. I'm trying here." She says, and I hear her sigh.
"Yeah, summoning that giant muscle man on everyone is really helpful to us getting back together." I say.
"I didn't summon him! He came to check in on me because I discarded my communication port." She says.
"Oh, so you're bisexual now. Does he know that you're a criminal?" I ask.
"LAYEANNE! I AM NOT ROMANTICALLY ATTRACTED TO MEN!" She yells. I hold my breath, completely caught off guard. Serenity has almost never yelled at me directly. "If I were to have called him, I wouldn't be in prison right now. Be reasonable." She says. No one talks for about five minutes, which I guess was okay since my head was pounding like a drum.
"Well, this is awkward." A different voice says. It sounded like a guy.
"Who are you?" I ask.
"Um, I'm Malachi." He says.
"Malachi? Like the one from the apartment?" I ask.
"Yup." He says.
"Malachi, the one that's always working, fighting, flirting with Elle, training, and being a nuisance?" I ask.
I hear him scoff. "I don't flirt with her."
"Bullshit." I let the word out slowly.
I hear him sigh. "Sure, whatever. Yes, it's that Malachi." He says.
"Oh! How ya doing, buddy?" I ask.
"I've been better." He says.
"Cool. Where are you?" I ask.
"I'm in the cell across from your girlfriend." He says.
"Oh, don't be a jerk. You know fairly well that we aren't dating." I say.
"Bullshit." He says, mimicking the way I said it.
"Well whatcha doing here? Does Elle know you spend your nights in prison?" I ask.
"It's not my fault I'm in here. I was walking back into the complex when suddenly I was bombarded with people in guard attire. They asked a bunch of questions, and they figured I lived with you guys. They didn't listen when I argued otherwise." He says.
"Oh, guess it's a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time." Serenity says.
"It's her fault that guy was sent to our apartment anyway." I say.
"Oh knock it off will you!" Serenity says.
"Shut up, you two. Somebody's coming." Malachi whispers. I scurry into the corner of the cell, and act unconscious.
I hear the sound footsteps, followed by doors opening. A guard in a gold and white uniform slides the key into its slot, and opens my door.
"Get up." He says. His voice was deep and he had a beard cut a few inches short.
"What's going on?" I ask.
"You're on trail. Get. Up." He says.
"On trail? For what?" I ask, slowly trying to stand.
"Don't be an idiot. You know what you did." He says, moving onto Elle's cell. I walk out the door, and in the Hall was a woman with the same uniform as the other man. She had lots of freckles and her hair was in a brown ponytail, she almost didn't seem threatening at all. Except for the smug grin on her face that looked almost murderous. In her hands were two chains, connecting to Malachi and Serenity's handcuffs. Malachi stood with his head on the floor; and Serenity looked oddly bored.
The man that took me out of my cell unlocks Elle's cell, and grunts.
"Get up." He says. She doesn't move.
"Get up." He says. The woman looks to peak into her cell.
"Maybe she's dead." She says. I suck in a breath. She must of heard because she let out a little chuckle.
"Be real, Justice. Buck couldn't kill a person. He's too much of a coward."
The man says.
"Fair point, Far." The guard Justice says. Far nudges Elle's head with what looked like a police's baton. She doesn't move. He whacks her in the side of the face, and she slumps over on her side.
"Stop!" I yell, pushing through into her cell.
"Get back out in the hall." He says. There's a groaning noise, and Elle moves her hand across the dirt.
"Elle!" I say, crouching down to help her upright.
"What.. OW!" She screams, gripping her side. Her hand comes back scarlet with blood, just like my head.
"What did you do to her?" I yell at him. My head pounds even more, and I fight down the urge to yelp.
He shrugs. "From what I've heard she's got a black eye, a stab wound to the hip, and a minor fracture in her hand." He says, "Now both of you, get up."
"Come on, Elle." I say softly, "we're on trail. Can you stand?" I ask.
"Probably not. But it looks like I'll have to." She says, grabbing onto my hand as I help her up. She pants through her teeth, and cringes.
Justice walks ahead of us, holding onto Serenity and Malachi. Far walks behind us, a rifle in hand. This is one of those rare moments I wished I knew less about swords and more about guns.
"Where's Jemma?" I ask.
"Jemma? The older Charlotte? I think her execution date was set a few hours ago. When are they going to do it?" He asks I assume Justice.
"A day from now. I hear they're even considering doing it at the same time as her younger sister." She says, "They'd probably find a way to escape and get back to their home world. The freaks. I wonder how much humanity is even in them. Nonetheless, I bet King Noah would be pleased to have such criminals exterminated." Justice says, humming. Serenity chuckles.
In a second, Justice had a knife in her hand, pinning Serenity against the wall, holding the blade only millimeters away from Serenity's throat. Serenity smiles.
"What's so funny, traitor?" She says.
Serenity looks her dead in the eyes, "Its funny how ridiculously dumb you government people are." She lifts her leg up to her hand and pulls a knife from the heel of her shoe, and throws Justice's hand away. Justice pulls out her Calvary sword, pointing it at Serenity.
"You have a bad stance." Serenity says, ducking below her sword. Justice slices through the air, barely missing Serenity. Serenity gets behind her, one arm with the knife around her neck and one arm gripping her dominant arm. Justice yells out in frustration.
"Come on, Justice! It's basic swordplay!" She says, popping the sword out of the other girls hand. She stands motionless, and Serenity motions for her to come over. Justice obeys.
"Gimme your weapons' belt." She says. Justice unclips it, throwing it into Serenity's hand. She looks over and Far, who stood in shock.
"You too." She says, and he does so.
A moment later we're walking down the hallway, Justice and Far handcuffed to the cells, a rifle in Serenity's hand, and four six inch daggers sheathed against my thighs.
