Chapter 15
Laye
He gave us all a week to make our decision in whether we want to join the court or not. He checks on us hourly, asking if we've made up our mind or not. It's been a week.
I'm gunna kill him.
Charlotte sleeps in Jemma's bed with her, and Serenity sleeps on the couch. She's using her vacation days to be here instead of work.
Jemma has been leaving with her sister every day, and then comes back in the late afternoon. I followed her the third day, and found out they were going to a field to catch up on lost time and train with long swords. After that day I didn't follow them anymore.
Back at home I practiced fencing in middle school, but I hated it. Long swords were too heavy and took too much effort. Charlotte had given her a longclaw to start off with, which I thought was a dumb thing to do, since longclaws are even bigger than long swords. But surprisingly Jemma was very good at using it. I wonder if she took some lessons in her home world.
I sit now in the barstool at the breakfast bar, staring down into my bowl of cereal.
"That must be some pretty beautiful cereal for you to stare into it for ten minutes." Serenity says, sitting in the stool next to mine.
"Shut up." I mumble.
"I'm going to sound like an aunt here, but please do stop with the constant mumbling." She says, biting into an apple.
"You're right. You do sound like an aunt." I say, dumping my cereal in the trash before walking away.
"Hey." Serenity says, taking hold of my forearm. I yank free.
"Leave me alone, Serenity." I say, looking into her dark eyes.
"You can't possibly blame me for leaving you?" She says.
"I don't really know what to feel, so how about you leave me alone and go back to working in an office in the government?" I say.
"Believe me or don't, but I still love you, Laye." She says, "its not my fault I was brought here."
"I bet you didn't even try to come home. Everyone thought you killed yourself. I thought it was my fault.." I say.
"No! You could never be at fault for something like that. Anyways, I don't see you trying to get back home." She says. I push passed her, and then past Elle to get to my room. I lock the door behind me, and jump onto my bed. Falling asleep in Jaylemm used to take you back to the real world, but now instead of logging off, you just sleep.
I wake up to the sound of yelling, and I wipe the trail of drool off of my face with the back of my hand. I unlock my door and quickly head to the living room.
A girl stands in the middle of the living room with her back to me. She had brown curly hair that went a little further past her shoulder blades. She had dark skin with a curvy body.
"Who the heck are you?" I ask, and she turns around. Her eyes widen as she looks at me.
"You literally do have that pale of skin with your mortal body." She says.
I give a puzzled look, "Jemma? Oh, yeah. I totally forgot about the whole mortal body thing. Wait," I grab hold of my hair, which had changed from being jaw length to shoulder length.
"You're an idiot." She says.
"I get that a lot, shockingly enough." I say. "Wait, where's Elle?"
"She ran to the bathroom to look at herself. I think she's a little shocked." She says.
I walk to the bathroom, and inside stood Elle. She was at least a head and a half taller than me, and her curly red hair went all the way down to her hips.
"Holy bejeezus you're tall." I say.
"That's what you say? Well I guess so, but you're kind of a shortie." She says.
"I'm only five three." I say, "Jemma's only a few inches taller." She had dark blue eyes and long eyelashes. Her face was speckled with freckles. Despite her red hair, she had a tan.
We walk back into the living room, where Jemma stood with a mirror in her hands.
"I did miss my hourglass figure," Jemma says.
"Easy for you to say, I'm a stick." Elle says.
"Meh, I'm a little under average." I say.
"You're not below average!" Serenity says, sitting on the kitchenette barstool next to Charlotte. Blood rushes to my cheeks, and she flushes.
"FEMALES!" Charlotte yells, throwing her hands up, "I HATE THEM!"
"You are a female, moron." I say, and Jemma elbows me.
"Yeah, well I'm going for a walk to the store. We're all out of chocolate." Serenity says, taking hold of the doorknob.
"Probably because you ate it all!" Charlotte says, as Serenity opens the door. She gasps, and takes a step back from the door.
"Is it Noah," Jemma starts, but a man walks in, with muscles protected with armor and a sheathed sword attached to his weapons belt.
The man steps inside, and Serenity backs up until she falls over backwards.
He looks at her with anger and seriousness, "Serenity. There's been an emergency. We've called you several times, but your communication port was deactivated." He says.
"Buck," Serenity and Elle say at once. I look over at her, where she stood with the scanner in hand.
"Buck," Serenity continues, "I can explain everything, just give me a minute." She says.
He looks around, before his gaze landing on Charlotte. He quickly draws his sword, running forward. In a second, I was in front of her, holding onto the forearm of his dominant hand. I twist it, but the armor prevented me from snapping the bone.
He looks down at me, and with a grunt of annoyance he hits me on the top of the head with the hilt of his sword.
Everything goes blank.
