Chapter 13

Jemma
I didn't really think I'd ever even have an emotional attachment to my sister. Yes, she meant a lot to me in my first dimension, but I didn't even know about her until early this morning.
But in that moment, it was like a door unlocked, and memories of my childhood filled my thoughts in waves. Of open fields, catching frogs with pigtail braids and grass stained jeans; of swimming in green lakes and fishing and running.
And here I thought my life was dull and boring, with nothing leading me anywhere. That the only thing I was good at was existing.
As I look at Charlotte, all of these emotions flow into me in such a rush it almost pushes me to the ground.
I step over the bodies of possibly deceased people, ignoring the blood staining my sneakers. I'm a few feet away when I stop.
"D-do you know who I am?" I ask quietly.
She chuckles, "Yeah, I know who you are." Her voice sound just like the memory of mom's, soft and reassuring.
"Oh, thank God." I say, hugging her. Her head fit perfectly under my chin. "If you didn't, it would be pretty awkward trying to explain that were related."
"Jemma?" She asks, choking on tears.
"Yeah?" I ask.
She sniffs, "I went back. It took two years to figure out how to work the teleportation power, but I went back home, Jemma. But you weren't there. Mom and dad weren't, either. There's a graveyard in our town. There's six Harrfor graves there. Two for our grandparents, two for our parents, and two for us. Jemmalyn Harrfor and Charlotte Harrfor. I just remember thinking, we didn't die. You, me, mom, dad; we didn't die. I'm still here. And you are. Oh my God Jemma I've missed you." She says.
"I've missed you, too." I say, running my fingers through her curly hair.
"Um, sorry to ruin the moment, but are we going to address the elephant in the alley?" Laye says.
"Yeah, what are these things?" Elle says, lifting one of their limp hands, before letting it fall.
"They're Perinnians. They're demons disguised as people. That's what their village is named after. They're quite annoying little buggers. There's a barrier around their village, though, so they can't leave but people can." Charlotte explains.
"Oh. Explains why they wanted to eat my brains." Laye says.
Elle look puzzled, and shakes her head, "So wait, you just killed the whole village with a snap of your fingers?"
Charlotte shrugs. "It's a basic technique, really. Perinnians regenerate, anyways."
"Oh, okay. That totally excuses the fact you killed all of them with a snap of your fingers. Sure. Sure!" Laye says, throwing her arms up.
Charlotte smirks, "I could probably reach you how, if you'd like."
Laye looks as though she'd seen an angel, "Please."
I shake my head. "You aren't tainting my little sister. I just got her back." I say.
"Uh, she's the one who offered." Laye says, shrugging.
"Guys, wait, didn't you just say they regenerate? We should probably leave, then." Elle says.
"I guess." Laye says, walking out into the street. "Let's get a move on, doggie."
"Laye, you're stupid." Elle says, wiping blood off her shoes in a patch of dead grass.
"Shut up." Laye says, swinging her arms around.

We walk down the street, back to the apartment complex.
"I've never been here before." Charlotte says, looking at the building. "Has it been built recently?" She asks.
"Not that I know of. Maybe you just haven't traveled the whole world." Laye says.
"Impossible. I've ventured every mile of this place." Charlotte says, as Elle opens the front door.
"Well maybe it's just," Charlotte starts, but stares off into the distance. When I look in the direction she was looking in, I found Charlie and her staring at each other.
"Why, hello girls." Charlie says, eyes still glued on Charlotte. "Welcome back. How was your day?"
"It was- interesting, at best." Elle says.
"Oh, well I'm sorry to hear that." He says.
"Look, Charlie, I know you're staring at Charlotte, so might as well explain,"
The boy Malachi walks into the room, hands shoved in the pockets of his jeans. His whistling comes to a stop when he sees us.
"Hey."
"Uh, hi." Elle says.
His gaze finds Charlotte, and his eyebrow raises.
"Isn't that,"
"Yeah, that's Charlotte, the apparent criminal." I say. "She's my sister."
"Oh. Um, I should probably call authorities,"
"No!" Elle yells, startling everyone. She turns pink, "Sorry, but no, don't do that. She's harmless. Well, sort of."
Charlotte blushes, and gives a short wave.
"Okay.. I swear, every time I come down here and you guys are here it gets weirder and weirder." He says, running his hand through his brunette curls.
"Yeah, we're pretty fricking weird." Laye says. "So you should probably leave. We spread weirdness on like a contagious skin disease."
"Okay, then."
Elle mouthed something that looked like sorry, and Malachi leaves with a wave.
"Well then, I wouldn't want to waste your girls' time, I'm just going to go to the back, if you need me, don't." He says; rushing to the back of the room. It reminds me of the first time I logged into Jaylemm. I said that exact thing to Noah.
Charlotte jumps over the counter, and catches him by the collar of his shirt.
"Hello, Charles. Or would you like to be called your formal name, Prince Noah?" She says, fist still gripped onto the fabric of his shirt.
"Charlotte! What on Earth are you doing?" Elle yells.
Charlie exhales, and opens his eyes. "Fine, Charlotte. What do you want from me?" He asks, not seeming to be mad, but defeated.
"First of all, change back. Seeing you as an old man is kind of disturbing." She says.
I look and Charlotte, then at Charlie, then back at Charlotte "What's going on here? Change back? What are you,"
Before I could finish, Charlie's bones start bending, forming into something else. I look away, feeling suddenly nauseous. Elle does the same, while Laye tries to look closer.
"Ah. It's been awhile." A voice says. I slowly turn around, and there, where Charlie just stood, stands Noah.
