Day 6: Fever

"Will you, Jay Walker, Master of Lightning and hero of Ninjago, take Nya Smith to be your lawfully-wedded wife?"

"I do."

"And will you, Nya Smith, Master of Water and hero of Ninjago, take Jay Walker to be your lawfully-wedded husband?"

"I-"

A loud cough sent shockwaves through the Water Ninja's body as she was brought out of her deep, intoxicating slumber. She ripped her eyes open and looked down at the source of her disturbance.

Her boyfriend, who was currently trying to survive his cough attack, looked like he was about to die, basically. His face had already turned red, and his coughs sounded worse and worse after every cough.

Nya yawned and rolled off of him. "Go drink something, man," she mumbled, settling back into the comfortable sheets and trying to continue her dream.

It took her a moment to get back into it, but once she did, she blended out every other noise and smiled.

"And will you, Nya Smith, Master of-"

Jay's cough rung in her ears again, making her frown. Then she relaxed again.

"And will you, Nya Smith, Master of Water-"

"Nya," Jay heaved, clutching her shoulder. "Water."

Said girl groaned quietly and shook his hand off.

In a matter of merely two seconds, his hand was back on her shoulder, gripping it for dear life. "Nya!"

Sighing, Nya gave up and rolled back over to look at him. Once she did, she sat up straight and immediately looked at her bedside table, suddenly feeling awake and alert. There was an empty glass on it which she grabbed and filled with water she quickly summoned.

Then she handed it to him and he drank it all vigorously. His gulps were the only sound coming from their shared bedroom until he removed the emptied glass from his wet lips and handed her the glass back again.

Another scratchy cough raked through his body.

"Sheesh." Nya jerked her face away from his. She turned back around once he was done and lightly placed her open palm on his forehead.

He was burning up.

"You poor thing," she said, genuinely feeling bad for her boyfriend. It was the third time his fever had risen in the past few weeks, and it was getting more and more concerning.

They had gone to the doctor's each time Jay would feel unwell, but every time the doctor would say that it was only passive and not so serious. Nya was beginning to question the older doctor's professionalism but was not one to voice her thoughts unless she was completely certain that was the case.

So they had returned with antibiotics they were prescribed and dealt with the colds and sicknesses all by themselves.

"I think we should go to the hospital," Nya suggested as she watched her boyfriend suppress another bad cough.

Jay immediately shook his head which made him more nauseous than stoic. "No, it's not that serious. I just need to-" A loud sneeze interrupted him.

Nya sighed, knowing he would say that already. "Well, then we should at least visit a different doctor. One that could actually help you instead of thinking about money first."

She wasn't one hundred percent sure about that, but Nya had a sneaky suspicion that Jay's doctor had some larger financial gains from having him as a patient, which might be the reason as to why he would want him to visit more often.

In a sick and twisted way, it made sense.

"No," Jay disagreed. He slowly lied down and gripped the blanket tightly, pulling it up to his chest. "It'll just go away if I lie down."

Nya blinked. Yeah, that was not going to work. At all.

She turned her head to her bedside table and grabbed her phone to look at the time. It was ten past five in the morning; still too early to be up. They had some sunrise training, though, which began at six.

The Water Ninja was sure that the Lightning Ninja would not be able to participate in that so she let him lie in bed while she got up and began to get dressed.

Jay's hooded eyes followed her around the room. "What are you doing?" he asked, sniffing.

"Getting dressed to make you something to eat."

He sniffed again, this time a bit fiercer to try and unclog his clogged nose. "You don't need to do that, Nya."

Nya shot him a short glance before continuing to put on her left sock. "You want some soup or some French fries?"

His eyes lit up.

"You know you'll get the soup regardless of your answer."

His eyes got dull again.

"You're no fun," he grumbled, showing her his scrunched up face to express his disappointment in her antics.

Nya shrugged. "You aren't either, and that's the problem."

After she got dressed in her gi (knowing it would be a waste of time to wear something comfortable only to change in less than fifty minutes again), Nya left the bedroom and made her way over to the monastery's kitchen.

In there, she found her brother leaning over the sink, with his head underneath the flowing faucet. He was drinking some water, as it seemed, and Nya had no intention of asking what was wrong with him when they had fresh, cold water bottles in the fridge.

Without saying a word, Nya pulled out a pot and began to prepare Jay's soup. She decided to make some chicken noodle soup since she knew that he wasn't a big fan of pumpkin soup or broccoli soup. Although he loved cooked broccoli.

Nya, being the Master of Water, didn't need to wait for Kai to get his head out of the sink to retrieve some water for the soup so she just did her own thing while he was doing his own.

A few seconds passed before she heard the faucet turning off. "Nya?" Her brother's voice followed soon after.

Nya threw a glance at him and found him staring back at her, a confused expression on his face. His scarred brow lifted itself, creating slight creases in his tanned forehead.

"Why are you up so early?"

"Jay's got a fever," she answered curtly, "so I'm making him some soup."

"Soup?" Kai asked, walking up to her as she was stirring the pot on the burning stovetop. "What kind of soup?"

"Chicken noodle."

"Mmm," her brother hummed, quickly picking up on the fresh scent that invaded both of his nostrils. He put his chin on his sister's left shoulder and looked into the pot. "Can I have some?"

Nya playfully jerked that shoulder up, causing his chin to collide against it. "No, you know you can't eat something before sunrise training, none of us can — Wu's rules."

"Forget Wu's rules," Kai said, taking another sniff of the soup. "Can I please have some soup, my favorite sister in the whole wide world?" he asked her again, giving her doe eyes this time. He knew she wouldn't be able to say no to those.

Nya blinked.

"No."

Damn.

"Please!"

The two stared at each other for a while before Nya sighed, giving in. "Fine."

"Yes!" Kai hissed, letting go of her to sit down against the kitchen island.

It didn't take long for the soup to finish. Once it did, Nya put some of it into a bowl and served it to Kai before she filled another bowl with it that she then brought to her and Jay's shared bedroom.

Even from the outside, she could hear his gut-wrenching coughs.

"I'm back," she announced softly as she walked inside and stopped near Jay's side of the bed.

He was still lying in the same position she had left him in. His eyes slowly opened and focused on her, a small smile gracing his nude, dry lips.

"Come on," Nya mumbled as she placed her hand under his body and helped him in sitting up. When his upper body was now in a sitting position, Nya also sat down and handed him the bowl.

Jay gave her an unimpressed look as he eyed the bowl. Nya rolled her eyes, knowing what he was thinking.

"No, I will not feed you."

"Then I will not eat it," Jay said, his pettiness getting the better of him.

Since his voice was raw and scratchy, Nya sighed and scooped up a spoonful before bringing it up to his lips.

Jay smiled, liking the fact that he won a mini-tiny-baby-argument. It was a rare occurrence for him to win anything when it came to her, so he enjoyed every bit of it.

"Why did the chicken cross the road?" he asked eventually, earning an uninterested hum from his Yang.

He ignored her lack of enthusiasm and chuckled.

"To get to the other side."

"Jay," Nya warned, glaring at him.

"But he didn't make it," he continued, blatantly ignoring her.

Nya pursed her lips to keep whatever she was about to do to herself. Was she going to warn him again? Was she going to laugh? Cry? Run out of the room?

"Because I'm eating him right now."

It was not funny. Not in the slightest.

Which caused her to burst out in loud laughter, making him smile triumphantly.
