Not A Mistake

It was a cold winter evening, even some thick blankets couldn't help but keep her cold. With the heaters being out, and Zane still desperately trying to fix them for three hours now, Nya made herself comfy in her bed.

There weren't any villains magically appearing recently, so training was reduced a bit. That was probably why she wasn't showing any signs of tiredness yet.

She herself didn't know what to do. The others were probably already asleep, she assumed. Everyone but Zane. However, she just couldn't sleep.

So she had made herself some popcorn, pressed the play button on one of her favorite Disney movies 'Brave' on her flatscreen TV in her room and just started to enjoy herself in the mess that was her blankets around her... everywhere, actually.

She inwardly congratulated herself on convincing Wu to let her install a TV in her room because come on, that was the best idea she could've had!

Around halfway through the movie, she couldn't help but feel something was off. But she was too invested in the movie and shrugged it off as her subconscious mind telling her weird, untrue things again. It did happen quite often, really, so it wasn't anything she listened to that much.

Right at the part where Merida was trying to hide her bear-y mother, Nya paused. Toilet break. She moved her way out of her room towards the bathroom, the female bathroom. Something she also cheered herself for for suggesting it.

On her way back however, she heard some weird noises. Noises which couldn't have been counted as her subconscious anymore, that was for sure. She quietly followed the dull noises towards one of the bedroom doors. It was the door of the one and only Blue Ninja, her Yin. Before knocking, she wanted to listen to the noises more closely and try to figure out what they were. She put her ear flush against the door and just listened. After a short while of complete silence, she could hear a faint sob.

Her worries increased, but she tried her best to not show it in her face. She knocked twice and waited, but no one answered. The sobbing also came to a halt. He must've heard the knock and gone in full-on quiet mode. After she heard no response whatsoever, she decided to follow a different strategy, the open strategy. "It's me, can I come in?" She asked sweetly.

Then she heard some shuffling from the other side and in a matter of seconds, the door opened to reveal a rather okay looking boy.

"Come in, Milady." He stepped to the side and swayed his arm in the direction of his room, allowing her to come in which she gladly did. After she walked in, he closed the door. "What's up?" He asked... cheerfully?

She looked at her surroundings. His room was all in all very clean, although the underwear on his room plant wasn't something she wanted to see. Her gaze landed on his bed. It was very messy, his bedsheets and blanket all over the place. Mr Cuddlywomp was on the edge of his bed, almost falling down as it seemed.

"Oh, nothing... I just wanted to come and say hi." She paused. "So... hi!" She waved her hand awkwardly in his direction.

Jay did the same gesture, though he couldn't hide his suspiciousness. "Heeeeeey, so why are you here?" He asked again, definitely not believing her earlier statement.

She sighed defeatedly. "Are you okay?" She asked, unable to hide her worries.

He raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, why wouldn't I be?"

Nya stepped closer to him, taking his hands in the process. "When I was on my way back from the bathroom, I heard someone crying... and those sounds were coming from your room."

Jay sighed. "I'm fine, don't worry." He told her sweetly.

She didn't buy that.

So she let go of one of his hands, stepped a little bit closer, and started to go through his messy locks with her fingers, inspecting them while untangling and re-tangling them. "You know you can talk to me if there's something bothering you." She murmured softly, still playing with his hair.

The Blue Ninja had to admit that he absolutely loved it when she played with his hair, it gave him a good feeling. So he let her caress his hair for as long as she wanted to, enjoying it. Though there was something on his mind, indeed.

"Why, do you think, did my biological parents leave me?" He asked quietly after a while of silence.

Nya suddenly stopped playing with his hair and focused on his face. The question was so unexpected for her so that she had to process it a little. "Where did that come from?" She asked back, a little bit shocked.

Nya knew Jay loved Ed and Edna a lot, even still after he found out he was adopted. However, he never went to confront them because he didn't want to change his relationship with his parents. He insisted on not talking to them about it, himself. And Nya respected that. They both were the only ones knowing he was adopted, or at least no one knew they knew. And the topic of his biological parents was long forgotten, they talked about it once and left it right afterwards.

"I dreamed about meeting them-" Jay started but stopped himself, trying to think about a right way of continuing. "We were all in Cliff's mansion. Me, Cliff, and my biological mother. But when I wanted to ask them why they left me, they turned around but they didn't have any faces and everything around me became darker and suddenly I was handcuffed to a pole and watched them do something and-" Jay stopped his aimless rambling when Nya pulled him into a tight hug.

She didn't say anything to let him cool down. His Yang wanted to keep him calm and prevent him from breaking down, though it seemed too close to happen.

When she felt her shoulder becoming wet, she realized it was too late for that. She shushed him sweetly, letting him let everything out. The Master of Water held him close while comforting him by caressing his hair a little more with her hand.

After a little while, Jay pulled away, sniffing. "I just wanna have a reason, you know."

She wiped away his remaining tears. "I know. But it's not good for you to make assumptions without having any leads. And the way I know you, those assumptions are probably bad reasons." She sighed.

He looked down. "But Nya, why else would they leave me? I mean, the excuse of 'I couldn't take care of a child' wouldn't work, they had everything for taking care of me. Let's just face it, I was made by mistake and they just wanted to get rid of me."

"Jason Walker," Nya cupped his face, slightly turning it down to make him look at her. By addressing him by his full name, Jay knew it was going to be serious. "I want you to let go of that thought. I don't want to hear that coming out of that mouth ever again because you're definitely not a mistake. By assuming that, you're only pulling yourself down."

He looked into her chocolate brown eyes, seeing a little bit of hurt in them. But he let her continue.

"Jay, I don't know what must be going on inside of your head because I've never been adopted. And I don't think I'll ever be able to completely understand it. But what I can relate to is that I was also left by my parents. For so many years I thought it was my fault, or Kai's, or both of ours. I was never given the reason, only the fact. And that's what broke me the most." She took a deep breath, a tear about to escape her eye. "And after more than a decade, I finally found out about the reason, and was also able to reunite with them. I realized they left me and my brother to protect us. Yes, it still hurts to know I didn't grow up with them. And no matter how good of a reason it was, it still won't justify what they did. But I forgave them and now I genuinely want to spend some time with them. Though I'm grown now and we all have our own lives." She sighed, looking away shortly. "What I'm trying to say is that you really shouldn't think about any negative aspects unless you know why, and in this case, you don't. Please don't make the same mistake I've done for years."

That's when she broke down. She felt horrible that she was the one that needed to be comforted now, but on the other side, she was proud of herself. She definitely wasn't the type of person to open up about anything, and her childhood was a very sensitive topic for her and she rarely talked about it.

Jay, while holding her, was just as proud of her. And also thankful. He smiled, letting his own tears fall down.

Both of their lives had been messed up by so many people for so many times that their little moment did nothing but good for both of them.

"May I ask you something?" Nya asked after she regained her self control and pulled away from the hug.

"Of course." He genuinely answered.

She took a deep breath, hoping the question wasn't too hurtful. "What do you think about Ed and Edna?" She looked into his eyes.

Jay smiled sweetly. "They will always play an important role in my life. They will always be the ones I call my parents, and I doubt that'll ever change."

And he genuinely meant it.

Nya's eyes glistened in happiness. "I'm glad to hear that." She turned around after hearing a faint sound.

Noticing Mr Cuddlywomp now lying on the floor on his belly, she went up to him and picked him up. She brushed away a little bit of dust from his face and walked back to Jay.

"Look, even Mr Cuddlywomp is happy to hear that." She stuffed the plushie into his face.

Laughing, Jay pulled away a bit, seeing his girlfriend also laughing quietly. His stomach growled a bit, which was actually pretty loud.

"You hungry?" Nya asked him.

Jay looked down to his stomach, raising an eyebrow. "Apparently. Wanna go to the kitchen to get a snack?" He smiled sheepishly at her, knowing he was going to make pancakes anyway.

"Sure."

He took her hand, leading both of them out of his room. On their way to the kitchen, he noticed she was still holding onto his blue plushie. "Why are you still holding him?" He whispered, not wanting to wake the others up.

Nya looked down to her chest to see Mr Cuddlywomp pressed against it. "I don't know." She whispered back.

Once they entered the kitchen, their eyes widened. In fact, their eyes locked with five other pairs of eyes. Cole, Lloyd and Kai were sitting at the dining table, Zane was just flipping a slice of pancake and Pixal was holding a plate out to him.

"Uhh..." Kai started, breaking the silent staring contest. "Morning?"

"What are you all doing?" Nya asked.

"And, more importantly, why didn't you tell us you were making pancakes?! I'm starving!" Jay added.

Lloyd swallowed his bite. "We didn't wanna wake you two up. But apparently you were already awake, huh."

"Do you want some?" Zane asked, pointing at a plate full of stacked pancakes.

Jay's mouth started watering. "You bet!" He exclaimed like a little child while sitting down on the table, also dragging Nya with him.

Instead of spending some time alone in the kitchen, the two lovebirds now shared their alone time with the others.
