Negligence
"JUST DIE ALREADY, UGH!"
Her eyes shot open, her hand curling into a fist. She quickly flew out of her bed as she grabbed her spear out of its holster on the wall. Adrenaline coursed through her veins as she almost burst through her bedroom door and sprinted towards the source of the yelling which happened to be the gaming room of the monastery.
The door being already open, Nya ran inside, immediately going into her fighting stance. The noises of the clicking of a controller and low, concentrated huffing and frustrated grunting brought the girl back to her senses as she realized her boyfriend was sitting on the huge couch all by himself, wearing his headset and playing a game of whatever the heck that was, she didn't know.
"Is everything okay?" She asked, putting her spear into its holster on her back.
Jay either didn't hear her, or he ignored her due to the fact that he did not respond. Frustrated, she stepped closer to him and sat down next to him, her legs crisscrossed. She looked at the TV screen to see that he was playing one of the shooter games they had in the monastery.
Nya was highly against games that contained this much violence, but in the end, all of the boys except for Zane agreed on buying them. They reasoned they were already used to violence, being ninja, and this wouldn't affect them at all.
And ever since those games entered the monastery, the boys played them at any spare minute they could. And it was more than frustrating.
She tapped on his shoulder, trying to gain his attention. "Jay?"
"Not now." He answered coldly as he wiggled a bit away so that the tapping would stop. His eyes never left the screen.
She glared at him before taking another look at the screen. "Jay, you shouldn't be-"
"I said not now!" Jay repeated a little bit harsher.
"I want to talk to you. Could you please pause the game?" She asked, her anger growing impatient.
He groaned. "It's a multiplayer game, I can't just pause it. Now go."
She rolled her eyes, annoyed. "Then listen to me while you're playing. Can you do that?"
Jay didn't spare her a look, but only nodded slightly.
She sighed. "Look, now that you woke me up from my nap that I was actually enjoying, thank you very much, I did some thinking."
"Ugh."
Nya glared at him, feeling her blood boil. "What?"
"Nothing!"
She narrowed her eyes at him before she sighed. "Jay, we haven't really been on a date in a while."
"Okay?"
The Master of Water felt like she was talking to a wall at this point. "So I wanna go on a date with you. We can go to a nice restaurant, or do something fun together, or-"
"Can't you see I'm busy?" He interrupted her.
"What?" Nya couldn't believe her ears.
What happened to the man who would do anything to go out with his girl?
He sighed. "Nya, I'm in the middle of a game. Come back in an hour or so."
Nya looked at him in disbelief, opening her mouth. Yet nothing came out, she was shocked to silence. So she got off of the couch and left the room.
Maybe in an hour, then.
~ an hour later ~
Nya looked at the clock to see that an hour has already passed. Sighing, she put her phone back on her nightstand and stood up from her bed, stretching. Then she walked out of her room again and headed for the gaming room.
Once Nya walked inside, she was immediately greeted by a gory TV screen to which she closed her eyes shut, not wanting to see that.
She walked up to the couch and stopped in front of the screen, facing him while crossing her arms in front of her chest.
"Would you mind?!" Jay asked, annoyed, as he turned his head from side to side to look at the screen. Nya was doing the same though, so he wasn't able to look at anything but her. He groaned, looking at her face. "What?!"
"Jay, you told me to come back in an hour. Now I'm here. Can we do something together now?" She asked sternly.
He held up the controller for her to see. "We can play together." He suggested, making her roll her eyes.
"You know I don't like to play violent video games. Besides," She sighed. "you've been glued to those games ever since they became a part of your game's collection. And that was three weeks ago. You haven't done anything with me since." Nya told him with glassy eyes.
"So? I've always told you you can play with me. It's not my fault if you can't stand blood."
The Master of Water quickly turned back around to take another look at the gory TV screen before facing him again. "You're literally playing games where you shoot people, Jay. And no, I can stand blood pretty well, you know that, but I simply refuse if I have a choice. These games are addictive, and you're the best example to look at."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Jay narrowed his eyes at her, annoyed.
She rolled her eyes. "You know exactly what I mean. Can't you just take a break? At least for a few hours to just do something with me? I miss hanging out-"
"Ask your brother or something, I have a boss to kill." He sat up straight again, ready for another round of his game.
Nya clenched her fist. "Kai's out with the others, Jay. We're the only ones here. And last time I checked, Kai wasn't the dude I call my boyfriend."
Groaning, Jay put the controller on the couch before getting up. He moved over to Nya and turned her around to put his hand on the small of her back. His other hand held her upper arm. Nya's eyes widened once she realized he was heading her towards the door. Once there, he gently pushed her out of the room and held the inner handle of the door.
"You have other friends too, hang out with them until I'm done beating the boss's a**." Then he shut the door into her face.
Nya was taken aback by her boyfriend's behavior as she tried her best to not turn into a crying mess. It wasn't worth it anyway. Huffing, she turned on her heel and walked away.
~ four hours later ~
"Come on! Why can't you just die?!" Jay yelled at the screen. He straightened his back again to go in full-on concentrated mode to defeat his virtual enemy.
The screen started to glitch. "What?" Jay wondered, losing his focus at once. Looking down next to the huge TV, he realized there was smoke coming out of the game's console.
Taking another look at the screen, it completely went black after a few seconds. Jay's eyes widened as he realized the smoking only increased in its magnitude.
Without thinking again, he grabbed the console and yeeted it out of the open window.
He watched it hitting some ledges before disappearing from his view. Sighing, he ran a hand through his auburn locks. "The others are gonna kill me." He nervously laughed.
Then he creased his eyebrows, wondering what time it was. So he went up to the couch and grabbed his phone, tapping the screen to be met with a lock screen of him and Nya together in their digi suits. It was taken shortly after they had exited Prime Empire.
07:49 pm.
Letting out a long breath, Jay decided to leave his room and socialize with his friends.
After he walked out, he heard some talking coming from the living room, so he went there to see the other boys sitting around the table, playing Uno.
Lloyd looked up at him, seeing him standing in the doorway. "Decided to leave the game for once, eh?"
"Yeah." Jay laughed nervously, scratching the back of his neck. He decided on not telling them about the missing console yet. "Why didn't y'all tell me you were back?"
"You're pretty much unavailable while playing video games lately, we didn't even wanna try." Cole answered honestly, putting another card on the pile of cards in the middle of the table.
"M'kay, I'll go check on Nya." Jay walked out, ignoring whatever Kai said afterwards.
Walking up to her bedroom door, Jay knocked and waited patiently until his patience wore out, leaving him knocking again. "Nya?" He asked.
After getting no response whatsoever, Jay frowned. "Nya, I'm coming in now." He informed, slowly opening the door.
He peeked inside, raising an eyebrow when he couldn't see her in her room. He looked around, the ocean blue cased phone on the nightstand catching his eye. Thinking she was probably just in the bathroom, Jay walked out of her room again to walk to the bathroom in the monastery.
"Nya?" He asked before he realized the bathroom was unoccupied.
Suddenly getting very anxious, Jay walked around the whole monastery, including the base, to not find his girlfriend anywhere. On high alert, he sprinted back towards the living room to burst through the open door.
"Have you guys seen her?" He asked out of breath.
All of the four boys slowly turned to look at him, unamused. "She's out with Skylor." Cole answered coldly.
Jay raised an eyebrow. "How do you know?"
"She told us before she met up with her." Lloyd answered.
"How come she didn't tell me?" Jay asked, confused.
"We didn't know you didn't know. But considering how you ignore everything around you while playing video games, I can't blame her." Zane answered, putting an Uno reverse card on the pile, making Kai next to him groan in frustration.
The memories then came flooding through Jay's brain as he remembered how he had treated her earlier, the guilt and remorse rising at once.
"D-Do you know where she went?" Jay nervously asked, fiddling with his thumbs.
"No." All four boys said at once.
"And do you know when she'll come back?" Jay asked again, looking at them as his lip trembled slightly.
"No." They answered together again, too focused on their game of Uno to even look at the Blue Ninja.
Sighing, Jay retreated back to his room. Flopping down on his mattress face first, he regretted everything he had told his girlfriend. He regretted his tone, he regretted his negligence, he regretted the fact that he had basically kicked her out of the room. Everything. But what he regretted the most was the fact that he wasn't even able to realize all this without the console being broken. He should have, but he didn't.
And he knew how much Nya was a person who wouldn't admit her feelings on her own. So the fact that she came to him and told him she wanted to spend time with him, to go on a date, for god's sake, and him still refusing, was what broke him the most. And it must've broken her even worse, now that he realized.
And now she gave up on trying again and apparently followed his advice on hanging out with someone else other than him.
The urge of punching himself in the face was tempting, really.
His body stiffened once he realized that his girlfriend could be anywhere right now. What if she was in danger? What if she was doing something she felt uncomfortable with? What if she was captured by Nadakhan again who- Alright, that was a bit too unrealistic. Or was it? He didn't know.
But none of the others apparently had an idea of where she was and when she would return.
Jay took out his phone and opened his contacts, searching for her name until he realized her phone was in her room. She must have forgotten it at home.
He sighed, letting his feet dangle down from the side of his bed as he put his elbows on his knees.
Nya was smart, she would come back to him. Unless his behavior managed to scare her away.
Jay accepted the fact that he would have to wait until she returned, though. But that wouldn't stop him from freaking out from the inside.
So he stood up and went to the kitchen. There, he quickly made himself a cappuccino to calm his nerves, grabbed himself a small blanket from the couch and headed out to the courtyard where he sat down on the stairs, his vision locked onto the huge gates of the monastery.
*Montage of Jay sitting with a straight back, leaning his head against a pole, pacing around, keep looking at the time on his phone, and repeating the whole process over and over again*
Many hours passed, and Jay was still out in the courtyard, waiting for Nya to arrive. He was wrapped in the blanket as he was resting his head against the pole, feeling his eyes getting heavier once again. He shakily pulled out his phone and looked at the time, his eyes widening once he read '04:33 am'. It was dark outside, and he could hear some crickets going crazy somewhere out there.
Jay started to overthink again, wondering why she was still out there early in the morning, and what she was doing. Was she avoiding him? Was she having too much fun without him that she realized she didn't need him to be happy?
Some sounds in the distance brought him back to his senses as he shot his head up, and he felt relief washing over him once he caught her quietly opening and closing the gates again, stepping inside.
Jay jumped up, the blanket flying off of his shoulders. He sprinted towards her and caught her by surprise when he wrapped his arms around her tightly.
"I've missed you so much! Where have you been?! It's four in the morning, Nya!"
Nya's eyes were still wide from the 'welcome home' hug. She loosely wrapped her arms around his back and tapped his back, wanting him to let go already.
Jay let go of the hug, watching her look around for something in her purse.
"I was at Sky's. We kinda lost track of time." She said as she moved towards the front door, still looking into her purse.
Jay watched her walk away from him, feeling his heart ache. "I'm so sorry."
Nya stopped in her tracks, however not turning around to look at him.
His head hung down, his gaze locked onto a small rock in front of him. "I'm sorry for everything I've done earlier today- or yesterday, actually. I shouldn't have treated you like that, and I've realized it too late." His lip trembled, his voice breaking. He shut his eyes tightly, not wanting to let his tears flow out.
Nya turned around as she slowly put her purse on the ground. Seeing him in that state, she moved over to him and grabbed one of his hands. "It's fine. You love playing video games, I can't blame you."
He then looked at her, a single tear escaping his eye. "But I love you more. Way more than that."
She smiled sweetly. "I know you do." She reached up to his face with her other hand and wiped the tear away from his cheek.
Jay quickly grabbed her hand as it was almost away from his cheek and brought it up to his lips, giving it a kiss. "C-Can I make it up to you by taking you out on a d-date this evening?" He asked nervously.
Nya got on her tippy toes and captured his lips with hers for a few seconds before pulling away slightly. She smiled dreamily. "I'd love to go out with you." She then yawned. "But first I gotta get some sleep now, I'm so tired."
Her boyfriend laughed cutely as he scooped her up in his arms and carried her inside.
