Late Night Talks

Set after season 6, Skybound. Also, Day of the Departed already happened so they're living in the Airjitzu Temple currently.

Not being tired enough to sleep was one thing, but not being able to sleep due to constant ponytailed, floating djinn haunting you in your nightmares was another story.

He felt sorry. For everyone he's hurt and everything he's destroyed. But mostly sorry for Nya. The thought of her having died because of the fact that he wasn't able to resist his first wish was straining, really. His intention was to impress her, not to lead her to her doom. And what did he do? Lead her to her doom.

Having nightmares about what happened in the alternate timeline was something he's always kept secret from her. He simply was afraid of opening up to her about something as serious as that. Why would he? He was always the goofy one, no one would expect him to be serious about anything.

He also never told her about what happened when he was captured and imprisoned on Misfortune's Keep. Telling her and making her worry was the least he wanted.

Whenever he couldn't sleep, or was too afraid to have another nightmare about Scrap N' Tap or his girlfriend's death, he would quietly sneak outside and climb up the massive building. He'd sit on the roof and just stare into the sky, looking at the many stars that were shining pretty brightly. It was quiet, it was calming, it was everything he needed to feel at least a little bit better.

That night, it wasn't any different. He woke up, covered in sweat as well as tears, quietly trying to catch his breath. He dreamed about her dying in his arms... again.

He wanted to go up to his usual spot on the roof, but first, he needed to make sure Nya was still alive. That nothing actually happened.

So he quietly opened his door and walked up to her bedroom a few doors away from his. He pressed his ear against the door, trying to listen for any sounds. When he heard nothing, he carefully opened the door wide enough to fit his head through and took a peek inside. The lights were out, only the moon shone through the slightly open window. He looked towards the bed, giving a soundless sigh of relief when he saw her tucked in her bed, her head sticking out from the covers. She wasn't snoring, but seemed to be asleep based on no movement. Jay smiled, quickly pulling his head out and closing the door again.

She was safe again.

He then made his way outside, climbing the Airjitzu Temple once again, making sure to do it as quietly as possible while climbing up the windows of his friends. Explaining to them what he was doing at around four in the morning was something he obviously wanted to avoid.

After sitting down on the edge of the roof, he let his feet dangle down and leaned back, resting his weight on his hands while looking up at the stars.

He wasn't much of a person to know about astronomy, but he did learn a thing or two from his parents when they used to go stargazing when he was little. Those were happy memories.

Jay sighed, remembering why exactly he was on the roof again. He closed his eyes, telling himself over and over again that everything was over. That everything didn't exactly happen. But his mind did the thing where it just didn't want to obey. Instead, it sent him back to those memories of seeing Nya die in his arms.

It was very traumatizing, really. Seeing someone die in your presence is already sad enough, but them being the love of your life was clearly enough for him to handle.

Then his mind drifted to somewhere else. He asked to himself how Nya was coping with everything. They didn't really talk about it that much after a short conversation right after they were back in the past. And then he realized that she never actually spoke about what was going on in her mind either. What if she was handling it worse than he did? Sometimes, whenever she couldn't sleep, or had a nightmare, she would come to his room and they'd cuddle together until both fell asleep. He never pressed on her to tell what those nightmares were about, because he assumed it hurt to even talk about. After all, he didn't talk about anything either, who was he to judge?

"Can't sleep either?"

Jay's eyes widened as he straightened his back and looked behind him to see his girlfriend walking up to him, a little smile on her face. Then he saw that she was holding something in her hand, and as she came closer, he realized it was one of her blankets. Before he could ask, she explained.

"You know, it's cold out here." She looked down to him once she was standing right next to him.

Nya then wrapped the blue blanket around Jay's shoulders and made him hold the ends so that the blanket wouldn't fall down. Then she sat down next to him, looking at him. "Why are you up here, boy?"

Jay sighed. "Did I wake you up?" He tried to avoid the question.

Nya realized that, but still answered his question. "Nope, I wasn't asleep anyway. I did see someone open my door, though." She laughed slightly. "Now you answer my question."

He looked away, at the ground to be exact. "I couldn't sleep." He mumbled, avoiding eye contact.

Nya sighed, shuffling a bit closer to him. "Was it a nightmare?" She asked.

The Master of Lightning looked back at her with no emotions visible in his face. "How did you know?"

Now Nya avoided eye contact, instead looking straight ahead towards the moon. "You're not the only one."

"What?" Jay asked softly, giving her his full attention. "Are you okay?" His eyebrows creased in worry.

Nya shortly side-eyed him. "Yeah, I'm kinda used to it by now."

Jay hesitated. "D-Do you wanna talk about it?"

She sighed, turning towards him. "I'll talk about it if you're ready to talk too. I know there's something on your mind."

Jay nodded, ready to take the risk of speaking up as long as his girlfriend did.

Nya took a deep breath. "It was about when I... d-died." She let out quietly, almost a whisper. Feeling tears already forming in her eyes, she paused. Then, when she felt ready, she took another deep breath. "I can't stop to think about what it was to just... go."

Jay took her hand, letting one side of the blanket fall. He opened his mouth, but she kept talking. "Even if it was only for a few minutes maximum, I felt myself waking up in the Departed Realm. And the people there seemed so... disappointed." She ended, feeling a single tear dropping down her cheek.

Her boyfriend noticed it and felt himself break down any minute.

"You know, every realm has its sister realm." When Jay nodded, she continued. "By destroying the Departed Realm, I also destroyed its sister realm. That being Djinnjago."

Jay thought about what she just said. He'd never thought about it like that, but she was right.

"And I-... I don't know, I kinda think it's all my fault."

"Nya-"

"No, listen." She then turned towards her boyfriend, tears escaping her eyes. "Jay, if I hadn't destroyed Djinnjago, he wouldn't have destroyed Ninjago to recreate his own realm. I destroyed millions of homes, and millions of people- well, djinn." She drew her knees back to her chest and cried into them, making herself smaller. "I'm a h-horrible person."

"Nya," Jay shuffled closer to her and pulled her into a tight side hug, the blanket now around both of them. "You're not a horrible person. You did what you have to to save Ninjago, and also probably millions of people if the Preeminent were to take over more than Stixx. If anyone's horrible, that'd be me. I-I was selfish enough to wish for wealth, only to have him capture you and the others and force you to marry him and then you get killed and-" His rambling stopped when she wrapped her arms around him.

"Don't you dare take the blame. It wasn't your fault, because then again, if I hadn't treated you like trash back then, you wouldn't have tried to impress me." She said against his chest.

Jay was at a loss for words because she was right, although he didn't want to think that. So he tried to think of changing the topic a slight bit.

"If we think about it, it's all Clouse's fault." He said, still deep in thought. Then it clicked. "Yeah, it is his fault. I mean, he was the one to seek revenge and release... him." Even thinking about his name sent shivers down his spine.

Nya looked up from his chest, her eyes meeting his. She sniffed. "So you're blaming him for my sins?"

Jay smiled softly, wiping her tears away with one hand, his other one wrapped around her smaller body. "No, because what you did weren't sins, they were mistakes. Mistakes that could've happened to anyone." He stroked her cheek softly. "Besides, I've made a lot of mistakes too."

She sniffed again. "Like what?"

He chuckled. "Like thinking I could impress you with a mansion and some money."

That made his girlfriend laugh a little, which made his heart soften again. "I'm glad you've realized that." She then snuggled back into his chest, feeling him wrapping both of his arms around her as well as the blanket.

So now, only his head was poking out of the blanket. Nya's black hair was a little bit visible, but nothing more. Both warming up each other with their body heat, they looked like a human sized, molded potato.

Suddenly, she poked her head out as well, startling him when he saw her face inches away from his, their noses almost touching.

"We had a deal." She reminded him.

He sighed, looking her deep into her eyes. "I was just replaying your... you know... in my sleep. Again." He mumbled the last word to himself, hoping she wouldn't hear.

"Don't worry, I'm still here." Then she closed the little gap between their lips for a light kiss. "And I'm not planning to leave any time soon." She smiled.

Her smile caused him also to smile a little. Without one more word, she snuggled back under the blanket into his chest. He sighed, kissing her head and looking at the stars.

He was lucky that everything that had happened, technically never happened. Though the memories would hunt him for a longer while, he was sure about that. He also thought about the fact that he was, in fact, still adopted. He knew that by wishing for money to impress Nya, that djinn only opened his eyes, and didn't actually make him being adopted. Jay didn't know what to think about that, though.

They also still had to inform the others about what happened, and guaranteed, none of the two was looking forward to that. But it had to be done so that they could prevent anything like that to happen again.

And not telling his girlfriend about the whole truth was also tearing him down. But he couldn't tell her just yet, she would probably blame herself for what happened when he was captured on that flying ship.

He sighed, taking a look down. Jay could hear very faint snoring, and smiled when he saw her sleeping in his arms. He also saw a very little smile on her face, she wasn't having a nightmare again.

And so they stayed like that for the rest of the night. Jay looking at the stars and holding his girl, and Nya finding the peaceful sleep she couldn't have for a while now.
