Interrogation A Lá Gossip
Sitting on a black couch side by side with her boyfriend, Nya was rather anxious. The two lovebirds were invited to an interview at NGTV News by Gayle Gossip.
And they were about to go live in less than two minutes.
Jay noticed her uneasiness and put his hand on her thigh, making her turn towards him. "Don't worry, it's gonna go fine." He smiled.
She took a deep breath and opened her eyes while slowly nodding. He always knew how to calm her down, even if it was with only a small smile.
There was a black armchair opposite of them where Gayle was supposed to sit on, but she was nowhere to be seen.
Nya wouldn't have even come to this interview in the first place, but Jay was too ecstatic about it. What she didn't know was that he wanted them to attend so that everyone that still had prejudices against Nya would hopefully put them aside and see her the way he saw her. Some people were obviously still not over the love triangle that happened years ago.
Although Nya was used to the spotlight by now, she never actually found joy in it as much as the boys did.
"Are you two ready?" Gayle rushed on stage and sat down on her armchair, putting one leg over the other and straightening her moderation cards on her thighs.
Jay took one last look at Nya who nodded at him. "Yes." He answered for both of them.
Then a very deep, almost robotic voice started to count down. "Gonna go live in five, four, three, two..."
Gayle immediately turned towards the camera, a big smile on her face. "Hello, and welcome to the NGTV News! I'm your host, Gayle Gossip, and today we have two very special guests here with us. Everyone, here we have two of our dearest Ninja, Jay Walker and Nya Smith!"
The camera switched to them and they waved to it as a prerecorded clapping crowd cheered for them.
"Thank you so much for accepting our request, I'm sure a lot of people are excited to hear some news about their favs." Gayle turned towards them, smiling.
"We're glad we were invited, Gayle." Jay answered casually. Nya nodded.
Gayle took a look at her cards. "Today we'd like you to answer some questions from your fans if that's okay with you. We got plenty!" She cheered.
"Sure." Nya's smile was fake and she just wanted to disappear at that point.
"Awesome!" Gayle started. "Our first question is from (...): When did Jay start to plan his proposal?"
Nya slightly raised her eyebrows. The questions were personal...
Jay chuckled, slinging his arm around Nya's shoulders. "If it was for me, I would've thought about proposing the first few days we started dating back in the day." Nya giggled to herself. "But I was thinking about actually doing that when the guys and I were sent to the First Realm. I was like 'if I ever return to Ninjago, and Nya is still in one piece, I won't hesitate to ask anymore'. And that's exactly what I did." Jay looked at Nya who was just staring at him a little bit too dreamily.
A fake audience aww'ed.
"That really is adorable. The next question is from (...): How did Kai react when you told him you wanted to propose to his sister?" Gayle continued.
Jay laughed. "Oh my gosh, I remember it like it was yesterday." He smiled back at the thought. "It was after we had that party after Garmadon was defeated. When everyone," Jay looked at his girlfriend. "went to bed, I sneaked into his room, catching him hugging his box of hair gel..." Gayle looked at Nya questioningly to which the Water Ninja just shrugged. "Then I told him about my plan and he, of course, thought I was kidding and laughed." Jay turned towards the camera, glaring. "Thanks, Kai." Then he looked back at Gale, smiling. "Anyways, when I showed him the pendant, he choked on his own spit and it took him a while to realize I was serious."
"Sounds like my brother." Nya chuckled.
"Exactly." Jay smiled at her, with her still leaning against him. "After a lot of 'are you sure's and 'I'm gonna bash your skull in if you hurt her's, he finally decided to say yes. In fact, he volunteered to help me in finding out how to ask. And I'm very thankful for his help, but he just isn't the type of person to keep those kinds of secrets to himself, 'cause he just spilled the beans to Dareth and Cole, and man, was it awkward to explain it to them." He sighed. "And I can still remember Cole with his wonderful comparing skills." He smirked at the camera, knowing full well that the others were all watching them on live television.
Nya raised an eyebrow at him, not knowing what he was referring to. He noticed it, but ignored it, not wanting to get Cole fear for his life.
Gayle looked at her cards. "(...) asks: How often do you make out?"
The couple immediately blushed. "What kind of a question is that?" Nya laughed awkwardly.
"It's apparently what the citizens want to know." She told her excitedly. She was obviously curious herself now.
"Uhh," Nya quickly side-eyed Jay. "we usually don't like to have public PDA, so that's... yeah."
"And at home?" Gayle pushed further.
"We just make out when we're alone sometimes." Nya answered a bit too quickly, wanting to change the topic.
"What do the others say?" Gayle's excited tone made Nya glare at her internally.
Nya took a deep breath, trying to calm down. "We definitely don't kiss in front of them like that."
"Did anyone ever catch you?"
Jay, seeing his Yang about to throw a tantrum, and also getting a little annoyed of the interrogation himself, spoke up before Nya could. "Gayle, I think we should move on now. I bet we have a lot more questions." He said through gritted teeth with a forced smile, hoping the remaining questions weren't as private.
"Right." Gayle looked down at her cards again.
Nya gave Jay a thankful look which he returned with one of his goofy smiles.
"(...) asks: What does your hair smell like..?" She trailed off, a look of confusion on her face.
Almost immediately, Jay stuffed his nose into Nya's hair, making her yelp in surprise, and sniffed. Then he sat up straight again, his face emotionless. "Strawberry. Coconut. Absolutely delicious."
Nya slowly turned her head towards him, her expression blank. Then, she broke out in laughter. That also made Jay laugh along with her, which also caused Gayle to giggle slightly.
Between her laughter, Nya talked to him. "Bend down." He did that, allowing her access to sniff on his hair. After a few seconds, she drew her face out of his brown, almost ginger locks again. "Hmm, I'd say honey and..." She took another sniff. "Chocolate..." She fake glared at him. "You know Cole's gonna kill you for using his shampoo."
Jay pulled out his phone and took a good look at the time. "Hmm, I've lasted exactly eight days, three hours and twenty-three minutes until someone realized." He smiled at her sheepishly. "That's the most I've lasted so far."
Gayle nervously laughed, knowing what she was about to say would cause more attention to their interview. "How do you know that Cole's hair smells like chocolate?" She smiled innocently.
Both Nya and Jay stopped laughing immediately, looking at Gayle.
The tension in the room became thick in only a few seconds.
Nya forced a smile. "I live together with him. Just like every other Ninja." She specified. "And chocolate is something you can smell from far away. Only being in a room together with him, I can smell it." She answered through gritted teeth.
"Then why didn't you notice Jay's hair smelling like that?" Gayle raised an eyebrow.
"Because," She almost snapped at her. "his hair also smells like honey, and it kind of made the chocolate less dominant."
Jay himself started to really get annoyed at that point. He realized what was going on now, Gayle wanted to bring up old stuff to gain more views. Wow.
Noticing Nya clenching her fist on her side, Jay consciously, and very obviously, took her hand, intertwining their fingers. Feeling Nya's muscles soften, he slowly drew out a quiet sigh.
They didn't need any more drama.
Not after everything that's happened to them, to her specifically.
Figuring she couldn't dig any deeper right now, Gayle continued, still smiling innocently. "Let's see... (...) asks: Is there still something between Cole and Nya?" She smirked inwardly, knowing this was going to be her breaking point.
Nya possessively squeezed Jay's hand even more, using it as a stress toy by now. "No, Gale, there's nothing between me and Cole. That whole stupid love triangle was literally years ago. Both of the boys have forgiven me, and we've all moved on. Why can't the citizens move on as well?" She smiled wickedly. However, she felt as if she was close to breaking down because of the old love triangle once again.
"But you didn't answer the ques-"
"I did!" Nya snapped, but quickly kept her composure again. She cleared her throat. "As I said, there is nothing between me and him. I actually see him as a big brother, and he casually addresses me as his little sister, so it's a two-sided thing. Brother and sister. Nothing more." She finished.
"And how do you see this?" Gayle turned to Jay, asking him as if she didn't believe what Nya said, to which the Water Ninja narrowed her eyes at.
Jay narrowed his eyes at her as well while giving Nya a reassuring squeeze. "How do you think I see this?" He asked, avoiding the question.
He turned the tables around, making Gayle gulp.
The other Ninja, Pixal and Master Wu were all eating salty popcorn while watching that whole thing go down in amazement.
"Please answer my question, Gayle." Jay said absolutely sweetly and obviously fake as well.
Nya turned towards her Yin, her eyes widening in both shock and adoration. Jay was rarely behaving like that, but when he did, it didn't turn out well.
Gayle cleared her throat, quickly thinking of something. "You know, maybe you would... I don't know... think there might be... something... when they're... alone together?"
Jay let out an almost wicked, over exaggerated laugh before glaring at her. "Gayle," He chuckled. "I trust them. Both of them. One being my girlfriend, the other my best friend. Yes, we've made some mistakes in the past, but dwelling on them for years won't make them happen again. We know better than that."
Nya smiled triumphantly as he continued his little speech.
"And for the record," He began again, looking directly into the camera. "this goes to everyone thinking I 'could do better': This is our personal life. I chose for her to be my Yang, asked her, and proposed. And she. said. yes. I knew exactly what I was doing and didn't even think about not proposing, or withdrawing it for that matter. I don't care if I upset our fanbase, but those who dwell on the past and judge a person by only one mistake they've made, without even knowing the backstory, aren't any better. Everyone who still thinks Nya isn't worth it, shame on you. She's done so much for you, fighting for your well-being, only to be judged by one silly thing that happened many years ago. It's sad how a lot of people just don't even want to accept the fact that she's a ninja, to be honest. But you do you, people," He turned towards Gayle whose eyes were completely wide. "you do you."
After she heard a little beeping sound coming from her in-ears, Gayle realized she'd missed her cue on making a cut and announcing they'd continue after a short series of commercials.
Nya, not being able to hold her tears in anymore, quickly dug her head into Jay's back where no one would see her face, not even him.
So he pulled his arm out and turned his whole body towards her, shielding any vision of her with his body. He comforted her.
"It's okay, shh. We don't have to continue." He whispered, realizing they would have to go back live in about three minutes. And honestly, he didn't want to continue either.
Her sobs were quiet. "Really?" She asked when she finally felt like she was able to speak again.
He nodded, smiling comfortably. "Let's go home." He said softly, getting up from the couch and pulling her up as well.
The Master of Water grabbed her boyfriend's hand. With her other hand, she wiped away the remaining tears, now deadpanning at Gayle. "You're messed up." She commented.
Gayle's eyes widened as she realized they were heading away. "W-Wait, where are you going?"
"Home." Jay answered, not turning back. However, he was holding up his middle finger so that everyone on set could see it. Hearing some gasps, he put down his hand again, smiling devilishly.
"But what about the interview?" Gayle yelled after them.
"Interview yourself!" Nya yelled back before exiting the room together with Jay.
Gayle breathed out heavily, turning towards the cameramen. "You got that on tape, right?"
When three of the cameramen nodded, she smirked. "Ooh, this is gonna be some good-"
Her speech was interrupted by electricity crackling through all of the electronic things in the room, including the cameras as well as the lights.
"I hope that teaches you a lesson, Gayle. Never try to snoop around in someone else's personal life, no matter how famous they are!" She heard Nya yelling one last time.
