An Unexpected Call (Part 1)

Set after season 14, Seabound.

It had been about a year since her departure.

It had been for about a year since Master Wu started blaming himself for losing one of his best students.

It had been for about a year since Zane and Pixal started playing the therapists of the team, although they themselves needed help.

It had been for about a year since Lloyd started blaming himself for losing one of his best teammates. But mostly his big sister.

It had been for about a year since Cole started to lose his smile, and his appetite. He couldn't bear to even look at a piece of cake because it would remind him of the many times she had joked about his diet choices.

It had been for about a year since Kai started to become mute. He rarely talked to any of his friends. He would visit his parents a lot, just to not feel as empty inside. He was the one to promise his little sister to protect her at all costs, yet he was also the one to watch her leave.

It had been for about a year since Jay started to shut himself out. His door and windows were constantly locked, and it was a rare sight of him leaving his room. It was also rare for him to let any source of light into his room, he didn't want to accidentally look at himself in the mirror pieces that were lying everywhere. The mirrors he had broken a long time ago. He was mute, and he wouldn't talk to anyone but Mr Cuddlywomp, and even that was rare. He kept blaming himself for everything. The thought of him not being good enough for her to stay with him was bugging him 24/7.

But then one day, Jay was torn away from his thoughts by the ringing of his phone.

He was lying in bed with his plushie flush close against his chest. His eyebrows creased together. He could still exactly remember when he had shut his phone off after receiving too many unbearable messages from friends, family, and the press. Everything was about his loss, which he wasn't ready to accept.

Yet now his phone was ringing as loudly as ever. And it wouldn't stop, on top of that. It couldn't be his mind playing tricks on him either because it would most definitely not play 'The Weekend Whip' at a time like that.

But then Jay remembered that his phone, just like every other Ninja's, had an automatic warning system for emergencies. No matter if one of their phones was on silent mode, turned off, or the battery was dead, the police commissioner could always reach out to them. It had been suggested by... her.

And back then, it was a great idea for crime fighting. However, right now, it was definitely not what Jay wanted to have.

The social interaction.

Yet he was still a ninja. And he had responsibilities to take care of. But then again, what kind of a good ninja would let his teammate just go like that? And worst of all; that teammate was his love.

But she would always want him to keep fighting. His mind drifted off to a memory from before this whole thing with Kalmaar began.

Flashback.

The two were cuddling in his room, watching a romance movie that was randomly playing on TV.

Nya looked at the screen intently as she felt Jay's arms around her form, holding her almost protectively. She frowned. "He just... gave up?! What kind of person would give up?!" She referred to the man in the movie.

"Nya, he just lost the love of his life. I can understand why he wouldn't want to go on without her." He squeezed her tighter, not wanting to imagine having to go through that again.

Nya sighed. "But he's a police officer! What if there's an emergency in which he's needed?" Then she turned towards her boyfriend. "Jay, if anything ever were to happen to me-"

"Don't say that!" He interrupted her, pouting.

"Still, if anything ever were to happen to me, I want you to promise me to go on, okay? Stay strong and keep fighting." She almost pleaded.

"But Nya, nothing will happen to you! Stop assuming that!" He could feel his heart break that she was even thinking about things like her not making it.

"Just promise me."

He sighed. "Fine, but nothing will happen to you!"

"Say it."

"I promise."

End of flashback.

Jay was pulled back into reality as his phone was still ringing. He sighed, realizing he had to answer.

What if there was an emergency? What if he was needed?

So he rolled off of his bed and walked up to one of his desk drawers. He lazily opened the drawer and immediately spotted his phone that was inside, lying on its screen. The blue phone case had seemed to have lost the color in the dark as he reached into the drawer.

Picking his phone up, he looked at the screen to see that his phone was on 68% battery. The phone screen showed that the commissioner was calling, just like Jay had expected.

He sighed before he clicked 'accept' and held the phone up to his ear. He was not planning on saying anything before he could judge if it was important for him to speak or not.

"Jay? Jay, are you there? Jay!" He heard the voice of the commissioner saying frantically.

"Yes?" He answered, his voice emotionless.

"Oh, thank god!" The commissioner sounded relieved over the phone. "Jay, I need you to come to the police station as soon as possible!"

"Why would I?"

The commissioner on the other end sighed. "I cannot tell you over the phone, Jay. Please just come to the station. I've tried to contact the other Ninja as well, but you're the only one that's picked up the phone. Now come!" Then he hung up.

Jay frowned as he looked at the black phone screen in his hand. Then he sighed, deciding to go look at whatever the commissioner had to show him.

He walked up to his closet and took a look inside. Grabbing his jacket, he decided to wear a pair of blue jeans and a blue jacket over a plain white t-shirt instead of his gi.

Putting his phone into his back pocket, Jay walked up to the door until he felt like the window was a better idea.

As he opened the curtains, the harsh sunlight made its way to sting him in the eyes. He blinked rapidly for a few times until his eyes could get used to the change of lighting.

He pulled out his phone to look at the time, it showing it was 09:11 in the morning. He sighed, putting his phone away again. Then he opened his window and practically flew out.

He sprinted down the millions of steps (don't know what they're called), and gave a sigh of relief once he stepped on the last one down the mountain.

For the first time in a long while, Jay could smell the summer breeze this closely. Using his lightning powers, he sprinted faster than any normal human being and in only a few minutes, he was at the borderline of Ninjago City.

He saw many people on the streets. Some were holding shopping bags whereas others were in suits and ties, probably either coming from or going to work. He sighed. Everything was back to normal in Ninjago. Everything was going as usual, no one seemed to be bothered by any losses.

He put his hands into the pockets of his jacket and speed-walked over to the police station, his head hung low.

As he was walking, he could hear some citizens gasping and saying his name, probably even pointing at him, but no one had the guts to come over and talk to him.

It was better this way anyway.

Once Jay was standing right in front of the police station, he looked up to read the sign on the building to make sure this was the right place even though he knew exactly that it was.

He pushed open the glass doors and walked up to the receptionist. Once the male receptionist looked up from his computer, Jay opened his mouth. "I've been called here." He stated coldly.

The man behind the desk nodded hysterically. "Yes, the commissioner is waiting for you in his office." He said, almost as if he was about to freak out.

Jay nodded and quickly walked around the desk to the other side. He walked up to a corridor and knocked on the door that said 'commissioner's office'.

He could hear some shuffling from the other side before the door was yanked open, revealing the police commissioner who seemed to be out of breath.

"Come in!" He said, stepping to the side to let Jay inside.

Jay walked inside, and looked around to see that nothing had changed about the office. He sat down on one of the two chairs on the opposite side of the desk and watched as the commissioner sat down on his own chair.

"Jay, about one hour ago, my team was called to the beach because an old couple said they witnessed something crazy. Even though it sounded weird, I decided to send some officers over there to check if everything's alright."

"Why are you telling me this?" Jay asked, uninterested.

"Listen!" The commissioner said hysterically. "Once my men went down there, they immediately called me and told me that there's a person lying on the ground, probably flushed out of the water by the waves."

"Okay? Why didn't the couple call an ambulance?" Jay leaned back in his seat and put his hands back into his pockets.

The commissioner ignored his question and continued to tell his story. "They seemed shocked over the walkie-talkies and couldn't get right sentences out of their mouths, so I told them to describe the person."

Jay raised an eyebrow, but let the man behind the desk continue.

Said man took a deep breath and looked intently at the Ninja. "Female, black hair, rather short, a mole on the right cheek-"

Jay could feel his blood boil. "Is this a joke?! Tell me, are you kidding me?!" He raised his voice. "Is it funny to talk about her now?!"

"Jay, calm down!" The commissioner warned. "I didn't believe it at first either, but once she was brought here, I'm positive it's her."

The Blue Ninja froze on the spot, his eyes completely wide. "That can't be possible." He said, mostly to himself.

The commissioner sighed. "She's awake, but here's the thing-"

"Is she here?" Jay interrupted.

"Yes, but-"

"In what room is she?!" The Lightning Ninja stood up from his seat and looked at the commissioner pleadingly.

He sighed again. "Room 202, but Jay-"

Jay immediately stormed out of the office and sprinted down the corridor. His eyes kept flicking from door to door, reading the tags right next to them.

'197', '198', '199', '200', '201', '202'.

Jay stopped and stared at the words '202'. This was it; she was supposed to be behind that door.

But was it even possible? If so, how? It had been almost an entire year!

But also almost an entire year in which Jay felt nothing but emptiness inside. With her gone, he lost every spark that made his day shine. She had made that spark possible.

Jay could already feel the tears in his eyes form before he even saw her. If it was even her. Maybe a look-alike? But she was one of a kind, she was special. No one could even remotely look like her.

But standing there like an idiot was also nerve taking. For so many months, he had craved to see her beautiful face, to hold her in his arms, to hear her stunning voice. He needed that, and now... he got it back?

Jay placed his hand on the doorknob and took a deep breath before he twisted it and slowly opened the door, not wanting to open his eyes yet.

"Thank you."

Jay opened his eyes at once and felt his throat tighten. The person sitting on one of the chairs in the room looked... just like her. She was wrapped in a brown blanket, and an officer had just handed her a cup of tea.

She was heading the other way, so Jay couldn't see her face, but the voice on its own was... hers. She sounded just like her. And the black ponytail he could see was just what he had missed to see in real life.

He stepped inside and closed the door, not directing his gaze away from her. His mouth was slightly open, yet his voice was long gone.

The police officer seemed to notice the Blue Ninja's presence, based on the relieved look he gave him. The girl seemed to have noticed the officer being distracted, so she put the cup down on the desk and slowly turned around.

Jay let out a small whimper as he saw her face.

It was her.

He slowly walked up to her while inspecting every detail of her face he had missed. Her round face, her mole on her right cheek which she used to think was ugly until he had managed to convince her it was absolutely beautiful, her long, natural eyelashes, her bangs that were now wet but usually flowing with every move she had made.

But most importantly, her eyes. Those chocolate brown eyes that he had always longed for, whether it'd be before or after her departure. Her eyes were holding the same spark they always had whenever she looked at him.

His heart certainly left his chest at that point.

She watched him curiously as he walked closer, step by step.

"Nya?" He asked, his voice almost breaking.

The girl frowned, but before she could say anything, he threw his arms around her and caught her off guard as he enveloped her in a tight hug.

Once Jay noticed she wasn't hugging him back, he realized that something was wrong. He let go of her and looked down at her.

She seemed to walk a few steps away from him. "I'm sorry, do I know you?"

*nervous laughter*
