Allergies - Flumptober Day #2 - INK
***All right, all! For Flumptober Day #2, the prompt is just that the oneshot be from an AU. I considered several of my current/future AU's for this, but finally settled for a oneshot from the "I Never Knew" series.
~ SPOILER ALERT ~ If you HAVEN'T read "I Never Knew" or "That One Girl" and intend to read those books, this oneshot has some serious spoilers for both books in it. That being said, here's your backstory:
Nya plans to run away from the team after her brother's wedding (Kailor). Because of an accident in "That One Girl", the whole team knows her plans. She left them all without notice for a few days, just to clear her head. When she met up with the team again, Kai grounded her for a month. She never talks about running away anymore, and though Kai still suspects she plans on leaving, he's now willing to leave her under the supervision of others. That's why she's at the monastery right now...
And she and Jay have been broken up for almost three months now.
Just so you know, this occurs at the same time as the epilogue of "That One Girl" <3***
***(Nya's POV)***
I stir my soup on the monastery stove, inhaling the delicious scent of mixed vegetables. It's been a long while since I've had anything other than Kai's cooking – well, except for when Skylor sneaks me noodles from her restaurant, but those are getting old. It feels nice to finally have variation in my diet.
Why have I missed out on the world of delicious food? Because I got myself grounded. For a month.
In hindsight, it probably wasn't the best idea to decide to run away for a few days to clear my head. I just needed a chance to cool down – I felt betrayed by nearly everyone I knew, and Jay wasn't helping things by pressuring me to accept his feelings toward me. I needed space.
Of course, I had to come back – I promised Jay I wouldn't leave for real until I graduated high school and got through Kai and Skylor's wedding. But when Kai found me, he essentially put me on lockdown. I don't blame him – he just doesn't understand why I have to go.
No one knows for sure that I plan on leaving now. It's a well-kept secret of mine – well, unless Skylor reads my mind and figures it out. I've kind of been avoiding her lately, though. It stinks, but I have to do it.
Kai essentially told me he's locking me up here at the monastery the night he and Skylor go on their honeymoon, just to make sure I can't get away. And he hired Cole to babysit me the entire time. He said he would've hired Jay, but Jay already follows me around everywhere. No need to pay him.
I guess I'll be leaving after the honeymoon. Unless I can get past Cole and Jay...
No, I can't do that to Kai. I can't just leave while he's gone. He'd never forgive me for that.
But then, if he really knew me, he wouldn't forgive me for a lot of things.
"Nya!" Jay yells from somewhere inside the monastery.
Oh, boy. What now? It's not like I don't care about him, but he's been obsessing over me lately. I think the problem is that I care about him too much, and I don't like seeing him this infatuated with one thing – one person. I don't want him to fall so hard that he loses himself.
"There you are," he exclaims, coming up behind me in the kitchen. "I have a surprise for you."
I frown. "A surprise, huh?" I don't like the sound of this.
"Mm-hmm." He sets a box down next to me and places his hands on my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder. "You wanna open it?"
His breath on my cheek makes me inhale sharply, and I pull away from his touch. "Jay...um...remember that we have boundaries?"
He messes with a lock of my hair. "Boundaries are boring, though."
The rebellious, roguish look in his eye makes my stomach tight. This isn't the Jay I fell for – the sweet, silly, romantic Jay. Actually, scratch that – the romance is still there.
It's just coming out in full-on bad boy form.
I take a step back from him. "Jay, why don't you open the box? Since you seem so excited about the surprise and all."
He doesn't retreat, instead caressing my cheek. "It can wait."
I shake my head, breathless as I back away. "Jay, what's up with you?" My tone is cautious, guarded.
"What do you mean?" he asks teasingly.
I suddenly realize I'm cornered, and he's advancing quickly.
"What the heck do you think you're doing?" I demand, my breathing ragged. I raise my hands up in defense, but they come to splay across his chest.
His chest is...harder than I remembered, and I can feel the rapid beating of his heart.
"'What am I doing'? I'm trying a new tactic," he says, his voice smooth and...surprisingly, charming. Jay's always been adorable, but never charming.
My heart flips, and I can't keep my gaze from flicking to his lips, just for a moment. "What..." I clear my throat. There seems to be something stuck in it. "What do you mean by 'tactic'?"
"A new tactic for getting back together with you," he elaborates, running his hands over my shoulders and down my arms. When he reaches my elbows, he uses his hold on me to pull me closer.
It doesn't take much effort on his part. I'm entranced by that mysterious, playful...heart-stopping look in his eyes.
"Jay," I whisper, trying to clear my head. "L-let me go." I realize my hands have gravitated from his chest to loop around his neck.
"Why?" he asks softly, inclining his head so he's a breath away from my lips.
"We're broken up." My eyes flutter closed, and I gasp in pleasure as he runs one finger over my cheekbone.
"I don't think you want to stay broken up with me."
"This isn't about – " I try to gain my bearings as he moves his finger to trace down to the tip of my nose and over the cleft above my lip. It comes to rest right over my mouth.
"What were you saying?" he murmurs, inching his face a little closer, tilting my chin up with his free hand.
"I – it – " I'm unable to lift my gaze from his eyes, which results in a totally inability to form words. I look like a fool.
"I'm waiting." His lips touch just the tip of my nose.
My grip around his neck tightens as I feel nerves swirling through me. "Jay, this isn't you."
"It could be, if it makes you happy." He looks down at my mouth, and I know exactly what his next target is.
"I...I..." Can't think. Can't think!
"Hey, Sis, are you – " Skylor stops mid-sentence.
Jay takes a huge, guilty step back, his cheeks bright red.
"I'm, uh, right here," I cough, trying not to sound like...well, like a girl who was about to be kissed by Jay Walker.
Skylor gives me a knowing look. "Whatcha up to?"
"Oh, nothing." I'm just about to go die of embarrassment, that's all. "I, uh, was making some soup." I rush over to the stove, quickly turning off the burner for the bubbling pot.
"Okay. I just wanted to let you know that Kai and I are headed out, all right?"
Ah, yes. Leaving for their spa appointment. None of the guys are supposed to know about it, but I'm so ratting Kai out as soon as he's gone.
"Don't get into any trouble while we're gone, okay?" She wiggles her eyebrows.
It's a good think I'm the master of water, because my cheeks are on fire.
"There won't be any trouble," I reassure her. "Have a nice day." Mine was just ruined.
"Uh-huh." She gives me an amused smile before sauntering away.
I hastily tear into the package Jay brought me, not wanting a repeat of what almost just happened.
Oh, who am I kidding? All I want is a repeat of that. But this time, I don't want my brother's fiancée or anyone else ending the moment before Jay can kiss me.
But we're sticking with opening a package. Packages are safe.
I run my finger under the tape, peeling it off and opening either cardboard flap. I pull out the plastic packaging inside to find –
I blanch. "You got me epinephrine injectors? Like, for allergies?" Why the heck would he buy me those as a gift?! I already have an auto-injector. I never need it, since I already take medicine to help lessen the effects of my perfume allergy.
"They don't have any epinephrine in them," Jay rushes to explain. "Those are just for practice."
I raise an eyebrow. "And...why do I need practice injectors?"
"So the guys and I can practice giving epinephrine to you, just in case of an emergency. Surprise!" He gives me a hopeful yet sheepish look. Bad boy Jay has all but disappeared.
I scowl. "Jay – "
"Now before you start arguing, think about how awesome this is, Nya. If you ever start to go into anaphylaxis, all of us will know what to do."
I plant a hand on my hip. "None of you wear perfume. I'm not going to go into anaphylaxis around you."
"What if we face somebody who wears a lot of fragrance in battle?" Jay challenges.
"Okay, first of all, I can inject my own epinephrine. Second, I take medicine to keep my allergy symptoms to a minimum. The worst reaction I've had recently was just me breaking out in hives." Skylor went wedding dress shopping a few weeks ago, and Kai temporarily un-grounded me so I could go with her. However, one lady there was wearing a lot of perfume – like, it was unholy, the amount of perfume she had on – and I broke out in a rash. Needless to say, that trip ended early.
"You could still have a life-threatening reaction!" Jay complains.
"Look, I know how to inject my own epinephrine, and so does Kai. Thanks for your concern, Jay, but I'll be fine. I am not Kai's helpless little sister whom you guys are all honor-bound to care for."
"Please?" he begs. "If you won't do it for yourself, do it for me. I've already memorized a bunch of articles off the Internet on what to do in case of an allergic reaction, and this is what it all comes down to."
"Jay – "
"Please?" He pulls me into a tight hug, using a tone of voice I've never been able to resist. "Just put my mind to rest and help me teach the guys what to do. I know you don't like people doting on you, but this could be really important."
I sigh.
Bad boy Jay may be oddly attractive, but this Jay...this is the one I really care about.
"Fine," I moan. "Fine. But I'm only letting you or maybe Cole practice, okay? You have no idea how embarrassing this is." Kai will make fun of me for it if he ever figures out.
"Aww, really?" Jay hugs me tighter. "You're the best."
I wiggle out of his arms to keep the emotions coursing through me in check.
Jay goes on. "Now, I've already set up a schedule for allergy drills, so we'll always be ready at the drop of a hat to – "
"Wait. Allergy drills?"
"Yeah. You know, like fire drills! You won't really having an allergic reaction when we host said drills, but the guys need to be ready for anything, and – "
"I'm so done." I shake my head. "You can have my soup. I'm going for a walk." And let out a butt-ton of embarrassment while I'm at it.
With that, I set the practice injectors on the kitchen table and rush outside before Jay goes nuts and decides to swath me in bubble wrap.
***And this oneshot leads right into the (newly!) current book in the AU, "Wrong Place, Wrong Time" <3***
