Chapter 1 ~ Water Towers and Beach Days

"PEEEAAARRRRRLLLLL!!!!" (Y/n) squealed and grinned, rushing up to the rather tall gem and engulfing her legs in a hug. (Y/n) wasn't very taller for her age, just reaching Pearl's knees with the poofy parts of her hair. She wasn't expected to grow very fast nor be as tall in the end either, it ran in her genes.

"(Y/n)! Hello again! Good morning!" Pearl greeted the child, squatting down to her height.

"Is mom and dad back from their mission?" the child hoped.

"Sorry sweetie but they aren't, they should be back soon though." Pearl replied reassuringly. (Y/n) nodded.

"They are strong, they will be fine!" (Y/n) said as Pearl reached up to her gem and extracted multiple ribbons. (Y/n)'s eyes lit up in delight as she began to bounce up and down.

"YAY RIBBONS!" the girl cheered, quickly sitting down in front of Pearl, cross legged, waiting patiently as the Gem sat behind her, legs on either side of the child as she began to tie the (H/c) locks into small piggy tails, finishing her work with the strands of fabric. (Y/n) turned around once done. "Am I pretty?" She asked.

"Very." Pearl smiled as she stood up to her grand height, offering a hand to the girl. Once (Y/n) was on her feet, Pearl made her way to the kitchen, preparing a breakfast for the child.

"Pearl, why don't you eat?" (Y/n) asked for the millionth time.

"I don't like it, it makes me uncomfortable." Pearl explained as she handed a quickly made bowl of cereal. (Y/n) thanked her before beginning to eat, watching with interest as Pearl tidied up the counter top.

"I'm BAAAACCCKKK" Amethyst called out from the front door, kicking it open and nudging it shut behind her with her butt. In her hands was a plastic bag and in the other was a donut.

"AMMMEEEEE!" (Y/n) mimicked with enthusiasm as the purple gem made her way towards the two.

"Hey (Y/n), is Steven and Connie still with Garnet?" her attention was turned towards Pearl who was now sitting at the counter top next to (Y/n).

"Mhmm." Pearl hummed, "They should be back soon though." Amethyst nodded as she eyed the ribbons in the girl's hair.

"I like your ribbons." She complimented.

"Thanks, Pearl gave them to me." (Y/n) grinned, eyeing the plastic bag Amethyst had brought in. "What's in the bag?"

Amethyst grinned and pulled out two boxes. "Pizza, for when the others get back." She placed the boxes to the side as (Y/n) frowned in thought.

"Is something wrong?" Pearl asked worriedly.

"I don't know... I'm getting a weird... I think...oh wait no, Dad is just going to the store right now." (Y/n) looked up and smiled.

"Is he now? And is Connie with him?" Pearl asked as (Y/n) concentrated on her thoughts.

"Yes and so is Garnet..." she paused, thinking, "Oh! We are all going to have a beach day! They went to buy some sunscreen." (Y/n) said excitedly.

"Tap inta Peri why dontcha? I'm curious to see if she and Lapis are coming to." Amethyst said. Pearl frowned in disapproval.

"Amethyst, (Y/n) shouldn't be using her gift for such things-"

"They are coming." (Y/n) cut in, pointing to the warp pad that began to glow. With seconds, the small green figure of Peridot and the taller, blue on of Lapis appeared.

"(Yyyyyyyy///////nnnnnnnn)!!!" Peridot yelled, running over and tackling the girl in a hug. (Y/n) jumped off the stool and hugged Peridot back, the two matching in height perfectly.

"PEERRRIIIDDOOOTTTT! You're here!" (Y/n) cheered. "Hi Lapis!" (Y/n) added just as excitedly, looking towards the blue gem.

"Hello (Y/n)." she replied smiling.

"We are going to have a BEACH DAY!" (Y/n) smiled as Peridot nodded.

"We can't get ANYTHING passed you huh?" she grinned. (Y/n) giggled.

To the average eye, (Y/n) looked just like a regular human girl, probably looking a bit younger than she actually was but "normal" was the way to describe her. To the trained eye however, you could instantly see that she was anything BUT "normal". While it was true that (Y/n) was human, she was also part gem, ¼ to be precise, which came from her father, Steven Universe.

It was also a big shock when there wasn't a single gem on (Y/n)'s body. The Crystal Gems were baffled that such trait had disappeared from the girl and were quite worried with what the "1/4 Gem" part meant for the girl.

It wasn't for a few years later that (Y/n) learned how to tap into an unusual power no gem had ever had before. Peridot called it a "coincidence of fortunate events" but the thing everyone else agreed upon was that it was a miracle. The power (Y/n) had, involved psychic abilities such as reading minds and detecting truths or lies. Another one of the powers was that she could talk to a person named "Rose."

(Y/n) never mentioned this to the Crystal Gems or her parents however, she kept the mystery woman as her secret friend as requested, who would talk to her whenever she pleased. The woman was a pretty lady in (Y/n)'s opinion, thick, pink curly locks that cascaded down her back as a white and pink highlighted dress coated her thicker body, in the middle of her navel was a gold star outline with a giant pink Rose Quartz gem in the middle, much like her father's.

(Y/n) knew who this person was the moment she first saw her in her dreams, Rose Quartz was her grandmother. (Y/n) had heard many storied and seen many holographic scenes from Pearl to now exactly who Rose was.

She knew the entire story too, being interested in the history of Gems, Pearl had decided to teach her all that she knew in her thousands of years of living. Today was the supposed day where Pearl was going to teach (Y/n) how to read the ancient gem language.

(Y/n) separated the hug with Peridot before concentrating on her father. "Dad, mom and Garnet are home!" she cheered as the three figures entered on time into the room. "HIIII GUYS!" she yelled, launching herself at Steven.

It had been 20 years since any real danger such as the cluster had occurred and ten years changed the appearance of the once small boy quite a lot. Now, he stood just a little under Pearl with Connie by his side.

Steven caught (Y/n) before lifting her up. "You're getting heavy." He teased as Connie pet (Y/n)'s head.

"Hi mom! How was the mission?" she asked.

"It was great honey, you should have seen the corrupted gem's face when it was cornered by Garnet." Garnet revealed a bubble with a red hue to it, inside was a small, floating, indigo gem that was in the shape of a rectangle.

"It was a little harder than expected but we got there in the end." Garnet replied, offering the bubble to (Y/n). (Y/n) concentrated on the gem.

"It seems sad-" She said, wiggling out of Steven's arms. "because it tried to hurt you guys who were its friends... before corruption...but it's happy now that it's in a safe place...It says thank you." (Y/n) tapped the bubble before sending it off to the Burning Room.

"Is that new? Talking to corrupted and poofed gems? Or am I just behind?" Peridot asked.

"No it's something I discovered when Garnet took me to the Burning Room for the first time... Oh! And Pearl taught me how to do this!" (Y/n) concentrate on herself as a small popping sound echoed in the house, staring at her wrist was a pretty little bracelet that disappeared once more after showing Peridot. "I can only do it to small things though since I'm not completely a gem." She explained.

"Still super cool!" Peridot insisted as she phased out of her usual body suit attire and phased into a swimsuit. "I learned how to recently too!" (Y/n) eyed the swim suit, eyes widening.

"That's right! Beach day!" (Y/n) cheered, rushing up the stairs to the small loft that held her bed. It used to be Steven's room but after a bit of practise, he managed to control his room in the temple door and shared that with Connie.

She began to dig through her wardrobe in search for her swimsuit before rushing into the bathroom to change. The gems patiently waited for the child as she hurried to get ready, Connie and Steven gathering up beach towels and umbrellas in advanced as Pearl rummaged around in a cupboard for the strongest sunscreen there was.

Once (Y/n) had changed, she exited the bathroom to find that all but Pearl had left. "(Y/n)!" she smiled brightly, beckoning the child towards her, "The others are waiting for you, put this sunscreen on and then we can head down for our Beach Day!" she cheered as (Y/n) grasped a hold of the sunscreen bottle.

"Are you going to join us for Beach Day?" (Y/n) hoped as she spread the white cream, covering her arms and legs.

"Me?" Pearl asked. "Oh no... I find the sand rather...unsettling." Pearl shook her head.

"Oh w-what?" (Y/n) asked in surprise. "Please Pearl!" the little ribbons bounced as (Y/n) moved her head to pout.

"Oh...alright." Pearl gave in as (Y/n) offered her the sun cream.

"Here!" (Y/n) smiled at Pearl who laughed and placed the bottle away before helping to remove the extra dollops that weren't mixed into her skin effectively. "Are you gonna change into beach clothes?" she asked as Pearl rubbed her cheeks.

"After I finish sun proofing you." Pearl explained, rubbing in the excess on her nose. "There we go! You ready?" she asked as a bright light filled the room, blinding (Y/n) for a second.

"It's always cool when you just phase into different clothes! I wish I could do that!" (Y/n) sighed.

"Practice is all you need."  The tall gem replied, grasping (Y/n)'s hand tightly as they exited the temple.

"GUYS! GUYS! GUYS!" (Y/n) cheered, pulling Pearl along and running to join the others.

"Howdy." Garnet said to Pearl, nodding her head.

"I thought you weren't joining us?" Peridot questioned.

"Well...I changed my mind." Pearl defended as (Y/n) jumped onto Peridot, pinning her to the ground.

"Gah! Oh! Hi!" Peridot grinned as she pushed herself off of the soft sand.

"Let's go in the water!" (Y/n) giggled, "We can find sea shells and I can give some to dad and mom!" Peridot only frowned in confusion.

"What's a sea shell again?"

"The carcass of dead microorganisms combined into an aesthetically pleasing giant version of the carcass." Lapis replied in a matter of fact tone.

"It was like you two switched personalities there for a sec." Steven pointed out.

"Oh no! I can handle one Peridot...another one isn't gonna work with me." Amethyst shook her head in dislike before smiling apologetically towards the blue gem. "No offense Lapis."

"None taken." Her signature lazy smile was returned to the shorter of the two before she directed her attention towards her roommate and what Steven and Connie dubbed, her "niece". "If there's anything I know more about than Peridot, it's the ocean and things that exist between the waves...I'll join you, it'll be...fun."

"Woah hold up, if you're going with Dorito-"

"I said not to call me that." Peridot cut Amethyst off.

"Fine, if you're going with PERI, then I'm coming to." The purple gem decided, transforming her body into a small boat. "Hop in (Y/n)!" (Y/n) grinned as she rushed over to her own personal boat as Amethyst placed herself in the water.

"Which way first?" Garnet piped up.

"Why don't we all just go looking for shells?" Pearl suggested, hands pressed together lightly.

"What a great idea!" Connie agreed, pulling Steven up from the blanket they sat at. (Y/n)'s eyed widened in delight as everyone made their way over to where she an Amethyst were placed.

Before long, everyone was on their hands and knees, including (Y/n), as they searched for anything that would appeal to the child. The water was refreshing against her skin and the small waves splattered around, causing her to get wet if it wasn't Amethyst spraying her.

"Ha! Got you!" (Y/n) yelled as she cupped the water within her hands, throwing it towards Peridot who shrieked in surprise, her gravity defying hairdo had somewhat split and stuck up everywhere with little droplets of water falling every so often.

"That's it!" she yelled as Amethyst dumped a bucket load of water on top of the green gem, snorting in laughter. Peridot cupped her hands together and dragged them under the water before lifting them out quickly, spraying everyone but her target.

"Who did that?" Garnet asked, displeased and somewhat upset.

"Umm." Peridot gulped, nervously looking guiltily at the water that surrounded her waist. Seconds later, a loud scream could be heard as garnet summoned her heavy gauntlets, smacking them right in front of Peridot, causing an entire wave to crash upon her poor head.

Pearl and Steven laughed as Peridot submerged, spitting whatever ended up in her mouth. "Sha bang." Garnet winked, fingers forming a gun and pointing towards Peridot.

"Gah! The water is soo...salty!"

"Like Pearl?" Amethyst teased, nudging the said gem in the hip jokingly. (Y/n) giggled in understanding as everyone else joined in, a heavy teal hue forming a sort of blush on the cheeks of Pearl.

"Do you need water for that burn?" Lapis snorted at her own lame joke before pretending to shoot Pearl.

"That was corny but I'll give it credit." Connie insisted as a pellet of water splatted Pearl on the nose. Before long, a thick stream of water came pelting down on the poor gem who took refuge under the waves, only to be brought back up to the surface as the area she was in elevated. Lapis smiled as she raises a hand up, causing the water tower to go higher into the air, Pearl wiggling about in a desperate attempt to get down.

"I wanna go up! Please Lapis?" (Y/n) giggled as Lapis shrugged, controlling the water around everyone to shoot up into the air and join Pearl.

"We are very high up..." Connie said, looking over the edge of the water tower that captured her legs.

"Drop us!" Amethyst begged.

"It wouldn't be wise to do that... the contact our bodies will make with the ocean will hurt and I sure don't want to feel the PAAAIIIINNN AAAAGGHHHHHH!" Peridot was cut off as the body of water holding her disappeared before her eyes, allowing her too fall back towards the earth with a cringe worthy splat.

"KEEP YOUR ARMS AND LEGS BESIDE YOUR BODY!" Amethyst advised as the small figure of Peridot resurfaced.

"NEXT TIME TELL ME IN ADVANCE!" she spat as Steven laughed. Lapis looked at her friend before smirking.

"What's so funny?" she grinned evilly before allowing Steven to meet the same fate as Peridot, crashing into the water with a painful slap.

"LAPIS!" Steven pouted as Peridot popped her head up out of the water unexpectedly.

"Hi Steven...I warned you it would hurt." She groaned as Connie began to yell.

"CANNON BOMB!" was the only warning the two bellow had heard before hastily making way for the woman to land, causing a mighty splash to form. "That was exhilarating." Connie noted before looking up into the sky. "Woah...that's how high we were? They look so small!"

"Yes, because they are far away." Peridot explained.

"I know that..." Connie mumbled, looking at Peridot questioningly.

"Oh please let me down nicely Lapis..." Pearl pleaded, looking nervously towards the unavoidable pain.

"The only one getting down safety is going to be me." Lapis snickered as she quickly moved her hand.

"See ya." Garnet shrugged at the seemingly unexpected movement. The water disappeared before her eyes as her body became stiff as a board. She made contact with the water with the smallest splash before raising a thumb up to signal she gave the experience a "Garnet Approval" as (Y/n) described.

"How did she- of course...future vision." Lapis reminded herself before carelessly tossing Pearl and Amethyst out of their water towers, watching in amusement as Amethyst spread her body out welcomingly towards the pain as Pearl curled herself up into a ball, screaming anything but profanities the whole way down.

(Y/n) didn't see them make contact with the water but she assumed that the biggest splat and smack that echoed for miles, belonged to Amethyst while the shallow "plop" sound belonged to Pearl. She turned her attention towards Lapis before grinning.

"Ready?" Lapis asked gently, raising her hand up in preparation for the eventual removal of water.

(Y/n) saluted her, "Aye aye! See ya on the other side!" she giggled.

"On the count of three." Lapis said as (Y/n) looked at her, determination filling her mind at the expected sudden drop." "THREE!" Lapis grinned as she removed the water, forgetting the first two numbers she had planned to say. But (Y/n) knew it was to be expected, Tapping into Lapis' mind was just too easy and to show off the fact that she was prepared, she pulled herself out of the water tower as it was removed, jumping up into the air and doing a small backflip before creating a perfect dive into the blue waters.

As Lapis flew down to join the others, all stinging with pain, (Y/n) folded her arms and grinned, "Mind powers." She reminded the gem, laughing when Lapis realised what she meant.

"Well I can't get anything past you then huh?" She grinned as (Y/n) nodded

"Again!" she pleaded.

"No way!" Peridot yelled, "There is NO WAY I'm doing that Aggaaiiinnnnnnn!" Lapis laughed as Peridot shot out of the water, landing with another painful splat.

"I could do that again and it would still be funny." Lapis teased as Peridot pouted. (Y/n) giggled as a gentle wave picked the group up. The water calmly pushed the small family towards the shoreline as Lapis continued to bicker with Peridot, some sort of teasing between the two about being thrown into the water was all (Y/n) heard before allowing her mind to be filled with another voice.

This voice was a woman's voice, and that woman was someone that none of the Crystal Gems expected (Y/n) to be able to communicate with. The voice was a kind and caring melody that rang delightfully inside her ears. (Y/n) smiled to herself knowingly before greeting the sound mentally like a familiar friend.

"Hi Rose."

"Hello (Y/n), having fun?"

"Yes, we had a beach day!" (Y/n) giggled to herself as her feet made contact with sand. She wiggled her toes, listening, listening to the request Rose Quartz was in desire of. She stopped. Frozen in spot as her family gathered around her, talking and questioning her peculiar behaviour.

"(Y/n)?" Steven asked cautiously.

"Are you sure?"

"They must know, I am in need of a favour from them"

"They'll think I'm weird."

"They won't, they will believe you, trust me." (Y/n) didn't chose to respond to her grandmother's wish and subconsciously nodded her head slowly, blinking reality back into her eyes.

"(Y/n)?" Garnet's collected voice soothed.

"Yes." (Y/n) said confidently, eyeing each person present. "I have something I need to tell you...more or less I have been asked to tell you this." Connie raised a brow as Peridot folded her arms.

"Well?" The green gem curiously asked. (Y/n) drew a deep breath.

"Ever since I can remember, I have been able to talk to...Rose Quartz."
