006
It had been a week since Taehyung had begun his infiltration mission. So far he had gotten suspicions about a few people, some were wrong, some were right while others were simply... puzzling.
The days were getting longer and the nights shorter, much to Taehyung's dismay since he preferred the darkness of a cold night over the humid and warm summers anytime.
However, as the new season rolled in, Taehyung made it a goal to complete his mission by the end of this academic year itself. He didn't want to be stuck in that school for any longer and most of all, he wanted to rescue his best friend as soon as possible.
Typically, the korean academic year for state schools ended around mid-February. However, since Daejung High was a private and prestigious school which mostly aligned with international school calendars, its academic year ended around the end of July and begun again in mid-September, contrary to the other korean schools which usually began in March.
So, Taehyung had approximately 2 months to find every information required to find the place where Jimin was being imprisoned and to come up with a proper plan to save him.
2 months might seem like a lot but it was actually very little time for an undercover mission. Some of these missions could extend over a year at times, considering that gaining information was always a harder task than it appeared like.
A breeze of fresh air blew against Taehyung's face as he returned home from yet another day's work. He normally loved the wind but right now, with the long strands of hair from his wig flying around and landing on his lipstick clad mouth, he couldn't help but despise it.
He cursed internally as he walked on, the breeze that was warmer than usual irritating him. He could feel the summer's heat already and he hated it. He hated that he would have to keep wearing those horrible disguises that clung to him and made him feel like he was constantly living in an oven.
Upon arriving at his place, he frowned on seeing the ruckus in front of his house. "What is going on here?" He demanded, scanning all the people in workers' uniforms and their machines around the house. Having momentarily forgotten that he was still in disguise, he nearly cringed when he heard the annoying high-pitched voice produced by the voice changer.
"We're here under orders to evacuate the place for reconstruction," replied one of the men. He held a some pages - which looked a lot like a sort of contract - in his hand.
"What? Why? This is my place and I never gave such orders," Taehyung said, utterly confused.
"Are you the owner of this house?"
"No but-"
"Well those are orders from the owner, himself. We can't go against them," claimed the man, interrupting Taehyung's words. He presented the builder's contract to Taehyung, a document which clearly stated that the house was to be taken down that same Wednesday to be reconstructed in such and such ways.
Taehyung stared with wide eyes for a moment, baffled, with absolutely no idea what to do. Wasn't the agency the one who bought him this house? Why were they having it destroyed all of a sudden?
"Uhh excuse me- wait a second, I'll just... I'll just make a call," he said before quickly grabbing his phone and turning away to call Yoongi.
He walked a further distance from the men so that he could turn off the voice changer. He waited for the elder to pick up anxiously. The moment he did, Taehyung fired, "what the hell is going on, Yoongi?!"
"What? What's going on?" Yoongi asked with a calm demeanour, contrasting to the inner turmoil Taehyung was having.
"What do you mean what's going on?! Kim Taeyeon is apparently homeless now, that's what's going on!" Taehyung hollered, completely exasperated.
(A/N: not me inserting 2 SNSD references in a single sentence lmao)
"What the hell are you talking about? Why would an idol with a net worth of over 10 million dollars and a yearly income of at least 1 billion won be homeless?" Yoongi inquired, sounding very obviously confused.
"I'm not talking about idol Kim Taeyeon, I am talking about agent Kim Taeyeon!" Taehyung replied, visibly annoyed.
"Oh? We have an agent Kim Taeyeon??" Yoongi asked. Taehyung could almost picture his wide eyes, tilted head and 'o' shaped mouth and he swore, if Yoongi had been in front of him, he would not have hesitated to decapitate him.
"Me, Yoongi, I am talking about me," Taehyung stated through gritted teeth.
He was met with silence for a few seconds. Then, "oh? Ohh!!" At that moment, the young disguised agent almost threw his phone to the other side of the street.
"Yeah, what about you? Why are you homeless?" The older asked nonchalantly. Taehyung had to keep in his frustration to not snap at him.
"Well, yeah you tell me. Why the hell is there a bunch of construction workers in front of the house I was allocated?!"
"What?!"
"I swear to God, Yoongi, I hear you say 'what' one more time and I'll rip your fucking voice box out!"
"Hey, chill. I'm genuinely confused right now. What the fuck are you being so aggressive for?" The hacker asked, hearing a groan from Taehyung.
The latter then took a deep breath before explaining the situation as calmly as he possibly could - which, for the record, was anything but calm.
Yoongi's reaction was for sure priceless on hearing what was happening. He spat out his drink, staggered out of his massage chair and ran to the lab with his shoes placed in the wrong feet. And he who thought he was going to have a nice afternoon off work for once!
There was silence for a while, only the sound of Yoongi's keyboard being heard on the other line. Then a sigh followed. "I'm afraid there's not much I can do," Yoongi said.
"What do you mean by that?" Taehyung asked in a panicked tone.
"Listen, this mission had to be set up quickly and finding a house at the last minute is not an easy task. I accepted whichever house I got in the area although they said it was being rented for a short time only. I thought you would be done with the mission by then," Yoongi explained.
"How could you think I would be done in a week?!" Taehyung was clearly exasperated. Who could blame him though? He was in a crisis, after all.
"Well, I didn't think the term 'short time only' referred to a week! I thought it was at least 3 months or something! Who the hell rents a house for a week only?!" Yoongi reasoned.
But it was not like Taehyung was in the mood to hear anything other than a solution. "Yoongi, I don't care about all that. I just wanna know where the fuck am I supposed to live now? Can't the agency provide another house real quick?" He demanded.
"V, this mission was carried out under Namjoon's plans and orders alone. We don't have the approval of the higher-ups at all. They're completely unwilling to support it in any way. You know how they are when it comes to captured agents. Jimin's rescue is on us and us alone. There's nothing much I can do in terms of getting you a house on the spot," Yoongi sighed heavily.
Usually, it was the higher authorities who paid for housing and came up with solutions in case of impromptu. Since they also had a pretty huge influence, it was typically easy for them to get anything in no time at all. But right now, the agents working on this mission were not allowed to use the agency's name, so that made things twice as hard for them.
"So what are we going to do then?" Taehyung asked.
"Hoseok is already looking for another house or apartment in the area. Just try asking those dudes to give you some time to pack and leave. We'll find something in the meantime," Yoongi replied.
"Can't I just come back to the agency?" sighed the brunette.
"V, you know it's way too far. You'll have to travel for 2 hours morning and afternoon to get to the school, now with your disguise and all, you'll have to wake up at like 4 a.m. everyday!"
Taehyung uttered out another heavy sigh. "Yeah, you're right. I'll try buying some more time," he said before cutting the call to go and negotiate with the builders.
He didn't forget to take out an earpiece from his handbag and wear it so that Yoongi and Hoseok could have an idea of what was going on and how much time they had.
"Okay, I understand but I'll just need some time to pack up," Taehyung said after turning on his voice changer.
"Yeah, cool, you have 20 minutes. Max thirty," replied a man with a monotonous gravelly voice.
Taehyung's eyes widened. "No, uh, I'll- I'll need more time!" He exclaimed.
"What do you want? Forty minutes? We've got work to do, can't give ya more than thirty mins," the man answered as he scratched his round protruding belly.
"I'll need at least a day or two. I can't pack everything in thirty minutes!" Taehyung protested. He absolutely hated how high pitched the sound was as he raised his voice.
The man laughed. "Good joke. Now pack and leave quickly before we throw your stuff out," he deadpanned, completely serious.
An argument evolved quickly between both parties, resulting in the young agent slowly losing his patience at the lack of understanding. He was also rather helpless. He knew that these people had a job to accomplish but all he could think of was saving his best friend.
It wasn't long before the loud screech of a motorcycle was heard. Taehyung winced at the sound, feeling like his eardrums were physically hurting.
He turned around to find a familiar motorcyclist. He almost scowled. He was already annoyed as it is and didn't need another trouble to spring up.
"Hey ma'am, all good?" asked Jungkook while looking around curiously.
"Yeah, we're just having a small discussion," Taehyung replied vaguely, internally praying that the boy would just leave already.
His prayers were apparently ignored when Jungkook decided to ask, "about what exactly?"
"Nothing that concerns you," Taehyung stated rather bluntly. His answer could have come off as rude but he couldn't care any less in that moment. He was stressed beyond comprehension.
"Oh," Jungkook said. "Umm maybe I could... help though?"
"No."
A throat being cleared brought Taehyung's attention back to the workmen. "So, I'll be asking you nicely a last time, please leave or we will have to drag you out," said the man.
"Huh?? What?!" Jungkook exclaimed and Taehyung mentally facepalmed. Here you go, free drama.
"It's nothing, you should get going," Taehyung tried to assure but apparently, the prospect of his professor being possibly homeless concerned Jungkook way more than it should have because the next thing the boy was doing was offering Taehyung a place to live.
The agent refused firmly but the younger would not budge. "Just listen to me," he insisted.
Taehyung brought him to the side, away from the builders and spoke, "listen, Jeon, I really think you should go and let us discuss this among adults."
"Hey! I'm 19!" He protested, receiving a pointed look from Taehyung. "Uh well...I'll be 19 in September," he rectified. "But, still! 18 is pretty big too!"
When Taehyung only let out a frustrated sigh, Jungkook went on, "you can just stay at my place until you find somewhere else to live."
"I can't, Jeon."
Inside his earpiece, Taehyung heard Yoongi and Hoseok's voices urging him to accept the offer, asking him what he was doing, why wasn't he accepting and telling him that he had no other option.
Taehyung wished he could just rip off the device.
"But why? You clearly need help and I'm offering it. Do you want to just live on the streets or something?" Jungkook tried convincing him.
"He's right, V! Just listen to him!"
"Please, Jeon, I barely know you. I don't even know if I can trust you, you can't expect me to just go live with you like that!" Taehyung exclaimed, completely ignoring Hoseok.
"I- I know I'm not easy to trust, but please give me a chance. I genuinely mean no harm. If you want, I can even help you to look up apartments and houses around here while you'll be staying at my house. It'll only be temporary anyway," the raven-haired boy calmly explained, his voice soft. His tone reminded Taehyung of that evening where Jungkook had comforted that young boy, and in that moment, he almost caved in.
"V, you don't have any better options right now!"
"I..." Taehyung thought for a second but sighed, "I'm sorry, I really can't." He turned on his heels and walked back to the builders to presumably try negotiating again.
In his ears, a pair of voices kept resonating. They were scolding him and kept reminding him of the reality of his situation.
"V, what do you think you're doing?"
"Just listen to us, goddammit!"
"Go back and tell him you agree!"
"You're going to be homeless! We really can't provide you with a house right now!"
Getting annoyed, Taehyung subtly brought a hand up to his ear and turned off the device. He was back in front of the house, Jungkook tailing after him. He began another attempt at getting a few more days before leaving when his phone began ringing.
Excusing himself, the agent walked away and turned off his voice changer. "What do you want again?!" He shouted in a whisper.
"V, accept Jeon's offer," Hoseok said, sounding rather defeated.
"I can't!" He exclaimed, mindfully keeping his voice low.
"But why?"
"I don't even know him! He could easily be our target!"
After some shuffling, it was Yoongi's voice that was heard, "we checked his records and they're relatively clean. You even checked it yourself multiple times! You know there's no way that he's Baekjun's son. Why do you have such a big problem with it when it's only going to be for a few days? We're not asking you to live there forever!"
Hoseok then spoke again and V guessed they probably had him on loudspeaker. "We're not asking you to fully trust him because, yeah, his records have got some bad stuff like violence against random people, vandalising, bullying and whatnot but if he ever does something to you, you can defend yourself. Just have your guards up while staying there for some days. We'll get you another house as soon as possible," the agent assured.
Taehyung sighed in defeat, "...fine."
He walked back to the group of men and said, "alright, I'll pack up. Just give me enough time to do so and I'll be out."
The workmen, who were apparently fed up of the argument, simply nodded. However, a certain 18-year old seemed quite alarmed and interjected, "but where are you going?!"
"I'll come with you," V mumbled.
"Huh?" His words were so low and incoherent that Jungkook couldn't make out what had been said to him.
"I said, I'll come with you," the agent grumbled, his voice just a little higher.
"Huh? Really??" Jungkook exclaimed, sounding rather cheery. When he received a pointed look from his teacher, he toned down his excitement a little and blurted, "okay, I'll get the car and come to help you pack! I'll be back real quick!"
That didn't stop him from sounding any less enthusiastic though. He was smiling widely, bunny teeth on display.
"That won't be necessary. Just get the car," Taehyung stated flatly. However, as he went into the house to gather his stuff, he couldn't help the little chuckle that escaped his lips at Jungkook's dynamic response.
A mere 25 minutes later, Jungkook was back and Taehyung was checking if he hadn't forgotten anything important behind. The younger helped him to load his bags into the car and soon, they were off to Jungkook's place.
To say that the ride to the apartment complex was awkward would be an understatement. Jungkook was aware of the discomfort felt by the elder and decided to initiate a conversation to dissipate the tension.
He cleared his throat to gain the lady's attention. "My house isn't too far from here, we'll get there in no more than 15 minutes."
A nod was all he received as response.
It was quiet for a while until Jungkook decided to try again. The awkward silence was unbearably suffocating to him. "Uhm would you like me to turn on the radio or something?" He asked, rather tense himself.
"No, it's fine," replied Taehyung. But after a few seconds of feeling stuffy in the female clothes, he added, "maybe just the A/C actually."
Jungkook nodded and complied, but not without a random comment about how hot the weather was since summer had begun, to which he received nothing more than a simple hum.
Taehyung couldn't help but think about how Jungkook was behaving like a middle-aged man in a club or a bus, trying desperately to start a conversation about the most random topics but failing miserably. It led him to wonder whether the younger might be hitting on him or something.
"So... how did you end up in this situation?" The ravenette ended up asking.
Taehyung sighed. After a pause, he replied, "to be honest, I don't know. They just came, saying the house needed to be reconstructed according to a contract or something and argued that I had to leave."
Jungkook nodded. "Must be hard coming back to this after a day at school," he commented.
The disguised agent hummed in agreement.
"It's okay!" Jungkook added cheerfully. "You can relax as much as you want at my place! I have a pretty nice flat." He turned his head briefly towards the elder to flash a bunny smile, and Taehyung had to admit that he was quite adorable, though he would never say it out loud of course.
True to the ravenette's words, they arrived soon enough and as they went up to the 18th floor where Jungkook's apartment was situated, Taehyung had to hold himself from gaping at the place.
It was more than just pretty nice. Having been lost in his thoughts during the trip, the agent hadn't paid much attention to the apartment complex they had been driving too. But when Jungkook opened the door to his flat, all Taehyung could see was luxury.
The whole place screamed expensive. Taehyung was almost afraid to pollute the opulence exuding from every corner with his own commonality. The residence rivaled that of important ministers or presidents that Taehyung had previously escorted or guarded.
Of course, he had himself been to posh hotels and such for his missions but he hadn't expected that type of accommodation for a school student. He was quite taken aback.
A slight chuckle brought him out of his reverie. "Welcome to my house," Jungkook said. "I would love to say my home but oh well, it doesn't feel much like it."
And as he took a second glance, Taehyung realised that the younger was right. This apartment - a duplex, with its modern complexity, the sumptuousness you would typically find in a mansion or costly villa, the black and white palette that added to its elegance and the huge leather couch which was probably worth more than Taehyung himself - was perhaps a dream for anyone to live in.
From the living room only, you could tell it possessed all the comfort one could ask in a house. Yet, it lacked the coziness of a home.
The white walls with black furniture made the place feel cold, the sleek gigantic black sectional couch didn't radiate the same comfort that a soft brown medium-sized lawson sofa - with multiple colourful cushions which seemed to be misfits - would provide and the overly spacious house seemed to dissipate the warmth that you would find in a small house.
"So, what do you think?" Jungkook asked.
Taehyung glanced around. From the huge floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room, to the enormous flat screen television on the wall, to the spotless dining area attached to the living room, to the large organised kitchen across the dining room and to the black marble staircase which led to the mezzanine, everything was spick and span.
It was to the point that one would wonder whether anyone even lived in here.
"It's really neat," Taehyung commented.
"Thank you," chuckled the younger. "I like having everything tidy, but it's not like I have time to make a mess in here anyway. I'm barely home and even if I am, I mostly stay in my room."
Taehyung simply nodded and heard a gasp. He turned to Jungkook who seemed horrified for some reason. "How impolite of me to leave you standing here!" He exclaimed, and it was then that the agent also realised that they were still at the door. "Come in, do you want something to eat or drink? You must be tired, right? Take a seat on the couch."
Jungkook's frantic reaction amused Taehyung and made him chuckle for the first time that day. "Stop acting like a host in the 1960s, I'm alright," he assured. "I would just like to take a shower for now, and it would be great if you could show me where I'm supposed to be sleeping as well."
Jungkook blushed a little out of embarrassment. Taehyung tried to hide the smile that was threatening to emerge at seeing the boy flustered for the first time. 'Ah, so there are more sides to this boy than I had seen,' he realised.
The ravenette nodded, gesturing for Taehyung to follow him up the staircase. The mezzanine, semi-circular in shape with a shiny metal railing, had black marble flooring that matched that of the staircase and contrasted the clean white walls. On one side was a small table on which books were stacked. Next to it were some plastic plants and a chair. The elder figured that it was mostly for aesthetic purposes.
But as he looked to the far end corner of the other side, he found a large black piano. It looked a little odd among all the modern things in the house. Sure, it fit the colour scheme and was very clean too, yet something about it seemed misplaced.
Taehyung's mind drifted to the day before when he had heard Jungkook playing the instrument at school. He still decided to ask, "do you play?"
Jungkook turned around and saw the elder's eyes fixated on the piano. "No," he said dryly. "I don't like music."
He then changed the subject to Taehyung's lodging. He pointed to the last door at the far left corner where the little table was found and said, "that's a common bathroom but you wouldn't have to use it. Your room has its own bathroom." He then pointed to the door next to it, "that one is supposed to be a guest room but it's mostly used as a store room."
He then gestured to the door close to the piano, "that's my room and this one here will be yours. It's right next to mine, so you can call me if you need anything."
Taehyung was about to walk to his designated room but Jungkook stopped him. "Umm I haven't had anyone over for ages, so the room is a little bit dusty," he said, opening the door to confirm this fact. And well, it was not just a little bit dusty.
Taehyung's eyes widened at the sight. The bedroom had more dust and spider webs than actual furniture. It looked like something out of an old mansion that hadn't been inhabited for decades.
Before the elder could speak, Jungkook added, "but don't worry, you can have a bath in the common bathroom while I clean it up. It shouldn't take too long I guess."
Taehyung gaped at him. What did he mean by it shouldn't take too long? This would take literal days to be cleaned up!
"No, I'll help you. You won't finish anytime soon if you do this alone," Taehyung stated.
"It's fine. Trust me, I can manage. I usually clean up the apartment on my own anyway," he chuckled. "Just take your time. Don't hurry." And Jungkook pushed him out to the bathroom.
Still worrying about how the younger was going to do all the work by himself, Taehyung took out everything he would need to bathe and entered the washroom. It was rather pretty. In contrast to the whole house's black and white theme, the walls and tiles were baby blue and of a light teal colour.
The agent allowed the bathtub to fill up with warm water while he took off his disguise. He heaved out a relieved sigh as he finally got out of the suffocating outfit before getting in the water.
Taehyung hadn't ever been really fond of soaking in his own filth - that was what he perceived bathes as and had always preferred showers - but this past week, sitting in a bathtub while allowing his body to relax had been oddly soothing. This mission was really fucking up everything about him.
Without him realising, 50 minutes had already gone by with him simply laying in the water which had turned cold. These 50 minutes were spent with Taehyung lost in his thoughts. He pondered over how he was supposed to carry out this mission with someone else around, how he was supposed to contact Yoongi and Hoseok with Jungkook around and most importantly, how he would have to wear those uncomfortable fake breasts and wig all the time until he found somewhere else to stay on his own.
Shivering a little, he got out of the water and headed to the shower to rinse the dirt off his body with some hot water. He spent a good 10 minutes in there before struggling to dress up again. He opted to wear a casual knee-length dress and fixed his wig before stepping out of the bathroom, without forgetting to put back his voice changer.
He was greeted with Jungkook coming out of his room, his clothes covered in dirt and dust and head sporting some fine spider webs. "I'm all done!" Jungkook exclaimed cheerfully. "It was not all that dirty after all, it was just dust that had accumulated. You can settle in now."
"Thank you," Taehyung thanked him, earning a bunny-like smile from Jungkook.
"It's nothing," the younger brushed off.
When Taehyung entered the room, he was in awe. It had been completely transformed; all the furniture that was previously almost invisible under the thick layers of dust were sparkling clean, the spiders webs hanging on the corners of the wall had been removed, the floor that had appeared grey at first was now spotless and revealed its original cream colour and the sheets and curtains had also been changed.
Taehyung also took notice of the windows that were squeaky clean. The brunette stared around for a moment, wondering how in the world had Jungkook been able to make such a change in an hour and a half only.
Feeling sorry for the younger who had to do so much work on his own, Taehyung went down to the kitchen while Jungkook was taking a shower upstairs. He opened the refrigerator - quite a fancy and large one equipped with a cold water distributor - and examined its content.
He didn't know if he had expected to find it filled with expensive ingredients and food but he sure was surprised to find it practically empty, save for a few cans of beer and some vegetables. He proceeded to open the freezer and discovered some meat - chicken and beef - in there while he also found a sack of rice, pulses, some spices, a few cups of instant noodles and snacks in the food cabinet, which for the record was orderly arranged.
The agent took out a few ingredients that he thought had the potential of making a pretty decent meal. However, there was a problem; whether you gave Taehyung the fanciest ingredients on the planet or the most mediocre, he was terrible at cooking! Nevertheless he was determined to make a nice meal in order to thank the younger for his hospitality and hard work.
Taehyung had been on his phone, looking for recipes and watching cooking videos of easy but tasty dishes he could make with what he had. He was still browsing through tons and tons of cooking blogs when Jungkook came down the stairs.
"Hey," the younger called out, startling Taehyung who had been unblinkingly focused on the video he had been watching. Jungkook thought that the reaction was rather cute, but quickly brushed off the thought upon realising that the person in front of him was his teacher. "I wanted to ask if everything's good for you. I thought I would find you in your room but you're actually here," he went on with a chuckle.
Taehyung nodded. "Yeah, I'm alright. I was just... well, I'm sorry for using the kitchen without asking," he said.
"That's totally fine. It's your house as well now, remember?" Jungkook asked with a smile. He walked towards the disguised male and curiously glanced around. "So, what are you making?"
"Still trying to figure that out," sighed Taehyung, looking back into his phone.
"Do you cook often?"
"Not really... I'm pretty bad at it actually," Taehyung bashfully admitted.
The younger chuckled, "why are you trying to cook then?"
"It's just that... you were kind enough to offer me a place to stay and also did all the cleaning, so I thought I would pay back for the effort by making dinner but I don't know what to make with so little ingredients," Taehyung replied.
"That's alright though, you don't have to pay back or anything," the ravenette smiled. He watched Taehyung typing in another search into his phone and added, "did you know there's actually so much you could do with that?"
The elder turned his attention to him. "Like what?"
"Hmm like... braised chicken with boiled potato and carrot salad or a one-pan baked chicken wings with carrot and potatoes or a chicken stew with veggies or a curry is also good and you can have it with rice too. Oh! And roasted chicken with mashed potatoes, I love that! And if you wanna have beef, then pretty much the same options are available and we can also make steak," Jungkook listed out, leaving Taehyung to stare at him wide-eyed.
He then narrowed his eyes. "Do you even know how to cook these?"
"Yeah, I make them for myself sometimes. When you live on your own, you gotta know how to turn the simplest ingredients into fancy meals," giggled Jungkook.
"Well, I live alone and all I can make is instant ramen," the brunette pouted, earning a hearty laugh from Jungkook. Taehyung thought he could really get used to hearing the boy's giggles.
"I'll teach you how to make good food," the younger declared, waving a finger around whimsically.
"Hey! Ramen is good food, don't insult it!" Taehyung retorted, pretending to be offended.
"Alright alright, it is. I meant healthy food," Jungkook clarified.
"Since when do high schoolers care about what's healthy and what's not?" Taehyung teased, raising an eyebrow playfully.
"Most don't. But I like having a proper diet. Gotta maintain that body, you know," he said with an amusing wiggling of his eyebrows while puffing out his chest and flexing his biceps. Taehyung chortled at the action. It would have been perfect if he did not have to wear the voice changer - which made his laugh sound a lot more high-pitched and slightly irritating to his own ears - for he was laughing genuinely after a really long time.
