Chapter 9

"You're irresponsible and your unreliable." Danny was telling Jesse as they reached Michelle's room, and Janie sat in the rocking chair with her. "I'll get back to you." Then he crouched down to their level, his face transforming from anger to sympathy as he studied his youngest daughter, trying to figure out why she was so upset. "Oh Michelle, honey, it's ok. Daddy is here." Janie studied her, and pointed at her mouth.

"Dad, look." She said, Michelle trying to latch onto her finger with her mouth.

Danny looked, and sighed at what he saw. "I see what this is. Michelle is getting a new tooth. Oh that really hurts." Jesse held up his hands.

"I had nothing to do with it." Janie held her close, petting her hair as Michelle sobbed.

"Poor baby," Danny murmured, "imagine, a sharp pointy, calcified projectile, ripping and knifing it's way through you soft, tender, inflamed gum tissues." Both Joey and Jesse were humbled by that description.

"I say we buy her a pony." Joey told him, and Danny shook his head.

"Sometimes a teething ring helps." He explained, handing a teething ring from Michelle's crib to Janie, who gave it to Michelle.

"Here you go, sweetie." She whispered, but Michelle just threw it, allowing Joey to catch it.

"Is this anything like catching the bouquet?" He asked excitedly. "Am I the next one to get married?" Jesse shook his head, and stepped onto base.

"All right fellows. Let the pro in. I'll show you how it's done." He crouched down beside Janie, and held his finger to Michelle. "All right little Munchkin.Where does it hurt?" He stuck his finger in her mouth gently, and her crying ceased as she gnawed on it. "Oh ya." He murmured, before trying to take it away, only making her cry and he stuck it back in. "Give me my finger back, kid." He muttered, trying again, and having the same effect.

"Well your brain's not working tonight, but your finger is doing great." Danny told him, before turning to Joey. "Joey do me a favor. I put one of Michelle's teething rings in the freezer." Then he looked to Janie. "Janie, give Michelle to Uncle Jesse and head back to bed. I would like a word alone with the alleged babysitter." She nodded, helping Jesse achieve a one armed cradle with Michelle as she chewed on his finger, Joey walking up to Jesse as she hurried away.

"Jesse, I guess it's a bad time to ask for that girl singer's phone number." Jesse gave him a look, before shaking his head.

"Get out of here." Joey hurried out, and Danny turned to Jesse, his arms crossed and the greatest look of disappointment that could have ever been on Danny Tanner's face.

"Well, well." He muttered.

"What, what." Was Jesse's response, and Danny shook his head.

"Shame, shame."

"I fell like I'm being chewed out in the Grand Canyon." Jesse deadpanned, not in the mood for games.

And frankly, neither was Danny. "I suppose I should be happy or the house is still standing. I must've been crazy to think that you were adult enough to take care of my kids. You really let me down." Danny started to walk away, and Jesse went after him.

"Wait a minute, where are you going?" Danny stopped and gave him a look.

"Oh, I thought I'd call the Beastie Boys and ask them if they wanna take the girls to the park tomorrow." Jesse pouted.

"You love this, don't you?" Danny shook his head, and went to the girls' room.

As soon as he left, Janie walked in, her arms crossed as she leaned on the doorway, and Jesse couldn't help but be reminded of Pam the way she looked before she talked to him the way he knew would knock him into shape. "Whatever it is, your dad said enough of it." But she wasn't here to yell.

"Uncle Jesse, if you needed my help with Stephy and DJ, why didn't you ask?" She asked. Jesse sighed, shrugging.

"I dunno, Jane! I mean, I guess I wanted to prove that I could manage those kids, but I guess I can't." She smiled.

"Jess, you know you can always come to me if you need help, right? We're all still trying to figure everything out." He sighed. He knew this was true, but didn't know how to respond.

Meanwhile, in Stephanie and DJ's room, the two little girls were whispering to each other.

"Uncle Jesse's is the best babysitter we've ever had." Stephanie told DJ happily, but for the first time that night, DJ felt very unsure.

"Yeah, but I'm thinking he's in big trouble." That was when they heard Danny coming down the hall, and rushed to her bed, flipping off the light. "Get in the bed." Stephanie ran over to DJ's bed, and DJ pushed her off. "No your bed!" Stephanie ran to her bed just in time before Danny opened the door.

"Girls are you awake?" Both girls sat up as though they had just woken up.

"Dad, is that you?" DJ asked, rubbing her eyes as Janie walked past, heading back to her room.

"Is it morning?"

"DJ, Stephanie, come over here right now." Danny told them, before calling into the hall. "Janie, I want you in here too." Janie groaned, but followed Danny over to DJ's bed, where she sat down on a little chair while Danny sat on the bed, Stephanie crawling onto Danny's lap. "Girls,we have a problem with Uncle Jesse." DJ shook her head quickly.

"Oh, no, Dad.We didn't have any problems with Uncle Jesse at all." Danny shook his head at that.

"I'm sorry. He was just so irresponsible." Then he saw something under the table that changed his mind. "What is this?" He went over to the table, and picked up the empty cartons of ice cream."Uh-oh Empty bowls and empty cartons."

"I had nothing to do with that!" Janie told him, standing up and pointing at the girls. "This was all them! My ice cream is still in the freezer!" Danny turned his attention to his two younger daughters, who looked down at their feet.

"Oh, now I see what happened. Uncle Jesse forced ice cream sundaes and chocolate milk down your throats. And then he hid the evidence under your table. Oh, the sick fiend. He probably ignored you when you told him no sweets after bedtime, huh?" DJ shrugged meekly, Stephanie staying silent on this one.

"Probably." Danny shook his head mockingly.

"No probably about it. Because otherwise you'd be lying. And you know better then that, don't you?"

"Probably..." Stephanie murmured.

"Well that does it." Danny told them, Janie furrowing her eyebrows, feeling like he was kidding, but a bit concerned. "I guess asking Uncle Jesse to move in here was a big mistake. In fact, this may be a matter for the police. Now sweet dreams my perfect little angels." He went to shut the door, and both little girls jumped up, running after him, Janie following at a slower pace. She knew he was kidding, but nothing could get that tiny amount of doubt out of her mind.

"Daddy, we were bad!" DJ and Stephanie told him as he came back into the room.

"We did everything." DJ admitted. "We even ordered the pizza. We should go and apologize to Uncle Jesse." Danny nodded, opening the door for them.

"You're right.You go first."

"Are you gonna punish us?" DJ asked worriedly.

"Before you answer that, we saved you a slice of pizza." Stephanie added, hoping to get the two of them out of trouble.

Back in Michelle's room, Jesse was having a semi pleasant conversation with the finger munching baby.

"Good point, Michelle. The thing I wonder is what is life all about anyway?" He said, Michelle of course not understanding. "I mean twenty-four hours ago, I was a relatively cool guy. Today, I'm a six foot teething ring." He looked at her as she stayed silent, and got to his feet. "All right. bed time. We're going to my bed. Come with me, come on.Let's go." He took his finger out for a minute, and Michelle began to cry again. Okay, hang on. I put it back. There you go." He put his finger back in, and carried to his bedroom. "Come with me." Almost immediately, Janie marched DJ and Stephanie into his room, both little girls looking remorseful.

"Uncle Jesse."

"Whatever it is the answer is no." Jesse told them sternly.

"We just wanted to say thanks for trying to keep us out of trouble." DJ told him. "The only reason we took advantage of you is because you had no idea what you were doing." Stephanie nodded.

"From now on, we will be good and do whatever you say."

"Don't get crazy, Stephy." Janie joked. "But we will all try to do better."

"You can cover up my bunnies if you want." Stephanie told Jesse, and Jesse shrugged.

"That's all right. Your bunnies are starting to grow on me." Stephanie smiled a small smile.

"We really love you."

"I love you girls too." Then he turned angry, scaring them all. "But next time you pull that stuff on me..." and he smiled again. "I'm still gonna love you." They all dove in for a hug as Danny walked in.

"Now you girls go to bed for real, or I'm taking everything out of your rooms and turning them into twenty-four hour mini-marts." The girls said their goodnights and hurried out as Danny walked over to Jesse, holding a slice of pizza.

"Hi." He said, a little embarrassed.

"Hi." Jesse replied, and Danny held out his pizza to him.

"Want a piece of pizza?" Jesse shook his head as he got comfortable with Michelle.

"No. me and the little leech are gonna try to get some sleep." That was when Joey walked in with a carrot.

"I couldn't find Michelle's teething ring so I got the next best thing. An ice cold carrot." Both men gave him an odd look. "Well I could've bourght the fishsticks but you guys would've thought I was an idiot." Danny shook his head, then turned back to Jesse.

"Look Jesse. I want you to know that was really nice of you to take the rap for DJ and Stephanie. And I'm real sorry, I got so crazy before walking around you saying well...well...well." Jesse shrugged nonchalantly.

"It's cool...cool...cool."

"The girls just mean so much to me. Especially now, you know, since Pam's gone." Danny admitted, and Jesse shrugged again.

"I know what you're saying, man, I worry about them too. They're my nieces. Ha..but I don't know nothing about this kid stuff."

"Yeah, I know, but both of you guys, you gotta remember, don't be afraid to say no. Kids need limits." Jesse gave Danny a look.

"What am I supposed to know? I've been here twelve hours. You're expecting me to be Robert Young."

"Now wait I'm confused." Joey interrupted. "Is it Robert Young from "Father Knows Best", or Robert Young "Dr.Welby?""

"This is gonna take some time." Danny admitted. "But we can make this work if we want it to work. Jesse, you do want this to work, don't you?" Jesse shrugged a third time.

"Oh, at first I wasn't sure. But, I don't know when, I saw that kid, tell me I could cover her bunnies up, and I was looking at that little baby in my arms, counting on me to stop her from being in pain." He sighed. "I don't know man. I got all warm and tingling...somebody...stop me." He groaned at his own sappiness, making Danny and Joey chuckle.

"You know, I'm just happy to be here. I was an only child. All I had was imaginary brothers and sisters. It feels great to be in a real house with real people. Right Leon?" He looked behind him at his imaginary brother, and Danny laughed.

"Give me my kid." He took Michelle from Jesse, and cooed at her. "Okay Michelle, time to go to bed. Yeah." She made some baby noises, and Danny tried a lullaby. "Lullaby and good night ,and there's more words I'm not sure of...."

"Conga!" Jesse exclaimed, and the three of them conaged their way to Michelle's room to put her down for a good night's rest.
