Chapter 4
Danny, Jesse, Janie, and Joey ran into the garage, where DJ was on the telephone. She was sitting in a lawn chair with a blanket and a few pillows.
"DJ, can I talk to you?" Danny asked. DJ groaned.
"Kimmy, hang on." She said into the phone. Then she turned to Danny. "I'm talking to Kimmy Gibbler. She called me on her own phone from her own room. She has three sisters." Danny crouched down to her level.
"DJ, you don't want to live in the garage. It's filthy... it's stuffy..."
"You want some fresh air?" She took a remote and opened the garage. Danny stood and pointed his finger at her.
"Donna Jo, I want you back inside right now this instant." He said firmly. Then he went all soft again. "Is that okay?" Janie smacked her forehead. DJ gave him a look.
"No thank you, dad." Then she went back to the phone. "So Kimmy, where were we?" Danny turned to the other three.
"Nice job, dad." Jesse said sarcastically. "You've been reading Cosby's book?" Joey's eyes brightened.
"Cosby? I'll handle this." Then he went over to DJ and began to impersonate Bill Cosby. "Hello there, small child- like person. Mmha... ha... ha... If you move back into the house, you can have a big, juicy bowl of jello. Mmha... ha... ha... ha... ha... ha."
"No, Kimmy, that's not really him. I'll call you later." DJ said, then hung up the phone. Then Stephanie came running into the garage.
"Daddy, the baby's crying. She's got that thirsty look in her eyes." She said, then ran back upstairs.
"Okay, honey. I'll be right up." He called, then turned to Joey. "Joey, would you mind warming up the baby's bottle?" Joey shrugged.
"Well, not at all. Although with this particular baby, it might be simpler just to pour the formula directly into the diaper." Danny gave him a look. "Well, think about it." Then he left to warm up a bottle. Jesse clapped his hands together.
"All right, DJ's all set and I got Vanessa upstairs waiting, so best of luck to the three of you." Danny stopped him.
"No, look, Jesse, look; I got to go check on the baby; won't you just stay here with DJ?" Jesse's eyes widened.
"What do you want me to do?"
"Talk to her; I'll be right back." Danny turned to leave again, but Jesse stopped him.
"Can't Jane do it? She's the big sister here!" Janie shook her head.
"Remember what happened with the diapers earlier? I have to make sure Stephy isn't getting into any trouble." Then she ran upstairs to Stephanie and DJ's room where Stephanie was putting all of DJ's things into a box. Janie laughed.
"Stephy, what're you doing?" Stephanie looked up at her.
"If DJ's moving into the garage, I get my own room. So I'm going to take her all of her stuff." As Stephanie tried to pick up the box, Janie picked her up and swooshed her over to her bed and plunked her down, then sat next to her.
"Stephy, DJ isn't moving to the garage. She's just going through a tough time. We all are." Stephanie slumped. "I just don't think she understands that she can't just do things like that."
"I wish Mom was here. She would know what to do." Janie hugged Stephanie.
"I do too, kid. Mom could always stop us before we did something like that." Then she looked at Stephanie. "Did I ever tell you about the time I stole all of DJ's toys?" Stephanie looked up eagerly. Janie always told the best stories.
"No. Please tell me!" She exclaimed, bouncing up and down. Janie laughed.
"Well, it was when DJ was about your age, two years before you were born. We had gotten in an argument. I was seven years old and I was pretty used to having things go my way. But now I had DJ in my life. One day, she came into my room and took down a picture I had drawn for Mom and ripped it into little itsy bits!" Stephanie gasped.
"No way!" Janie nodded.
"I was so mad at her, that when Dad took her downstairs, I ran into her room and took every single toy I could find and hid them in the alcove of the attic! Mom caught me with a teddy bear and the bag of building blocks." Stephanie laughed, then squeezed Janie around the middle.
"Thanks Janie. You're the best!" Then they went downstairs just as Jesse came up from the garage.
"All right, DJ is moving back in." He announced. Danny grinned.
"She is? That's fantastic! What did you do?" Jesse shrugged as he headed upstairs.
"I have a very special way with kids." He replied. Then Danny stopped him from going.
"Uh, Jesse, hang on. Vanessa's not upstairs." Jesse came back downstairs.
"Where's Vanessa?" Janie covered Stephanie's ears as Danny stammered.
"Well, uh..."
"She's history!" Stephanie shouted, as she couldn't hear anything. Jesse ran over and covered Janie's ears.
"What the hell did you do with Vanessa?"
"I didn't do anything with her. I just told her that with four little girls in the house, I thought it would be better is she slept on the couch. And she left." Jesse took his hands off of Janie's ears, who took her hands off of Stephanie's.
"You hate me, don't you." Jesse told them as DJ entered the room. Danny went over to her.
"DJ..." But Jesse stopped him.
"Whoa... whoa... whoa... whoa... whoa... whoa... whoa. Vanessa is gone. The deal is off. I want my money back." Danny's face went concerned.
"What money?" DJ shrugged.
"The money Uncle Jesse paid me to move back in." Danny looked upset at Jesse.
"That's your special way with children - you buy them off?" He demanded. Jesse shrugged.
"It works. Kid, money."
"Yeah. He paid me twenty bucks so I wouldn't tell you about how the last time he babysat us, dinner wasn't a meatloaf and green beans. It was pizza and cookies." Janie told Danny.
"What!?" Danny shouted. Meanwhile, DJ had crossed her arms.
"Fine, I have other sources of income. I'll go back to my new room and have a garage sale." She headed back to the basement, but Danny stopped her.
"DJ, wait. DJ." He turned to Jesse and handed him the baby. "Here, take Michelle." Then he turned to Stephanie and Janie. "Come with me, girls." The four of them all went to the kitchen.
"DJ, honey, I can't let you have a garage sale." Danny told her. DJ crossed her arms.
"What if I give you ten percent of the profits?" Danny shook his head.
"DJ, come here." She went over and sat on his lap. "Can't you just try sharing your room with your sister? Your mom was always so good at this stuff. I'd come home from work, and everything was always perfect. DJ, how would mom have handled this?" DJ looked to Janie, then back at her Dad.
"She would have caught me before I moved into the garage. Mom knew everything I did before I did it." Janie nodded.
"It was just how it was." Danny nodded slowly. Then looked at DJ.
"What is it, honey?"
"It's just not fair. First, I lose my mom; then, grandma leaves; now, I even lose my own room? Everything keeps disappearing."
"I know exactly how you feel." Danny told her. "And I know how much you girls miss your mother, because I miss her too, very much. But you still got me." Stephanie went over and hugged DJ.
"You got me, too." Janie reached over and patted DJ's shoulder.
"And you got me too, Deej."
"You got Michelle, and you have your uncle Jesse, and Joey. DJ, we're still a family, and now is when we really need to stick together. DJ, you and I, we go back a long time - ten years. The ten happiest years of my life. So look; it's up to you. Either you move back inside, or all six of us are moving into the garage. But nothing is gonna break up this team." DJ looked at her two sisters and her dad, then grinned.
"I'll move back in." Danny kissed her forehead.
"I love you, angel." Stephanie leaned for a hug and Danny kissed her forehead as well. "You too, little ballerina." Then he took Janie's hand and kissed, since he couldn't reach her forehead. "And of course you, sweetheart." Then they all went back into the front room, where Jesse was talking to Michelle and Joey was putting things away in the alcove.
"That's it; you said it. You said, "Uncle Jesse." Jesse whispered to Michelle happily. Then he saw Danny, Janie, DJ, and Stephanie coming in. "Starting tomorrow, you use the toilet just like the rest of us." They all laughed.
"Good news. Uncle Jesse, our deal's back on." DJ told him." Jesse started to take out money, but DJ stopped him. "It's okay; I'll put it on your tab." Jesse smirked.
"All right." Danny smiled at the two of them.
"Aw. Is this great, or what? These girls are crazy about you." Jesse gave him a look.
"Oh, sure. I dance around; I give them money." Then Michelle began to make some noises.
"Uh... uh..." Jesse looked at her.
"Now what's the problem?" Janie laughed at him.
"Oh, there's no problem. She's singing. Michelle loves music." Joey perked up.
"Music? I'll handle this... Ooh... Flinstones... meet the Flinstones..." Jesse joined in.
"They're a modern stone-age family..."
"Everybody sing along!" Jesse shouted.
"From the... town of Bedrock, they're a page right out of history."
"Let's take a walk!"
"Let's ride... with the family down the street. Through the... courtesy of Fred's two feet..." And the seven of them walked around Michelle's playpen, knowing that the next few years of their lives were going to be fantastic.
