Chapter 15
Danny ran out onto the playground as DJ tried to sneak across the yard to the gate.
"Freeze!" DJ went pale, and turned to face her father, who already looked very disappointed in here, with his arms crossed and a frown across his face. "What is this? I don't want to jump to conclusions, but it appears what we have here is my daughter ditching school, throwing away her future, and basically becoming a juvenile delinquent." DJ nodded, feeling completely embarrassed she got caught.
"In a nutshell yes." Danny shook his head., wanting to smile, but knowing he had to discipline her, and get her back to class.
"Do you mind if I asked you a question before you go and knock off a 7-11? Why are you dropping out of school?" She sighed, crossing her arms and looking at her feet. That's when Danny knew he couldn't discipline her.
"Because they put me in the smart class." Danny smiled this time, completely washed over with pride.
"The advanced class, DJ, that's wonderful!" DJ gave him a look, and he knew at once that he had made a mistake.
"Dad, it's Geekville USA." She told him, completely embarrassed by this. "These kids, the first day of school, they brought homework. And get this, I'm the only blonde. Worst of all, they split me and Kimmy up." Danny felt terrible for his daughter, though proud of her accomplishment. But he wouldn't show that he wasn't conscious of her feelings.
"Oh. I know you're disappointed." But DJ knew his feelings about Kimmy, and knew he wasn't going to do anything about the two of them not being in the same class together.
"Dad you don't understand." She fussed. "Kimmy and I have always been in the same class. Now I'm in a room full of eggheads. They're worse then eggheads, they're omletteheads." She plunked down and sat on the edge of the slide, Danny coming over and sitting beside her, trying to find some way to comfort her.
"DJ, it's the omletteheads that rule the world." She gave him a look, and Danny tried another tactic. "You really should give this a chance. You know why?"
"Why?" She asked. She couldn't think of anyway she should give this a chance.
"Because if you don't try new things, you'll never know what you're missing out on." And of course, that was when Stephanie came out of the building again and waved to her class through the window.
"Bye!" She began to head down the sidewalk, waving at her father and sister. "Bye Dad." And that was also when Jesse and Joey hurried out, looking harried. Joey was still holding Michelle.
"Danny, we gotta go!" Danny stood up, looking overwhelmed.
"Hold it! Where do you think you're going?" He stopped Stephanie, then looked to Jesse and Joey. "What's going on?"
"I'm going home." Stephanie claimed.
"We gotta go up to the high school." Jesse explained. "Overheard the principal on the phone looking for Steph. Apparently, he runs both schools, and he's heading up to the high school to see Jane." Danny's eyes went wide.
"Janie's in the principal's office?" He threw up his hands, looking exasperated. "Oh, this day just keeps on getting better and better!"
"Can I go home then?" Stephanie hoped, but Danny grabbed her shoulder before she tried to walk away again. "You're not going anywhere! Nobody is going any place unless it's back into those two rooms!"
"Danny, here, we'll take care of the girls-" But Danny didn't let Jesse finish his sentence.
"No, I'll handle this. You two, just wait there, I'll get these two back to class, and then we are all three going to the high school..." DJ tugged on his arm. "Yes?" DJ pulled him away, after Danny made sure Stephanie wouldn't try to make another run for it.
"Let me just talk to my sister alone okay, woman to woman." DJ told him, knowing what Stephanie was going through. "I think I can help. You need to get to Janie." Danny hesitated, but he trusted DJ, and he hurried to leave, making sure that Joey and Jesse were okay to make sure the two didn't leave while he went to the high school right next door.
Janie
"Hi, Mr. Davis?" Danny knocked on the door at the high school principal's office, seeing Janie sitting there with a black eye and an ice pack, a boy sitting beside her, also with an ice pack and a sling around his arm, his lip swollen and his nose red and clearly recovering from bleeding. "I'm Mr. Tanner, Janie's father?" The principal looked surprised to see him, but gestured to one of the empty seats in front of him. There were four, and only one remained once Danny sat down.
"Morning, Mr. Tanner. It's actually good you came along, I was about to call you."
"What's going on?" Danny asked, looking between his daughter and the boy, neither looking like they wanted to answer.
"Apparently, your daughter has a bad temper, as she attacked Christopher here." Danny's eyes went wide. Of all of his children, Janie attacked someone?
"Excuse me?" The principal nodded.
"Yes. She apparently pushed him into a locker, twisted his arm around his back, and trapped it in the door. As a result, Christopher punched her in the eye, but was unable to do anything else." Danny looked to his eldest daughter, her arms crossed across her chest. She didn't look very sorry for what she did.
"Janie, is that true?" He asked, and she nodded.
"And I'd do it all over again. You all refused to listen to me." She retorted, and Mr. Davis folded his hands together, Danny sitting back and crossing his arms.
"Then tell us your tale."
"He was grabbing another girl's breasts!" She told the principal. "He's not even supposed to be in this school, he's only twelve! He ran up to some girl on the playground over there and grabbed her breasts!" That made eyebrows raise.
"My son would never do such a thing!" Came a shrill voice, and the boy's mother entered. "How dare you accuse him of such actions!"
"Mrs. Richards, please sit down." Mr. Davis told her, rubbing his temples.
"Believe me, Mr. Davis!" She told him. "She was just playing jump rope, and he grabbed them! She smacked them, and all he did was laugh and do it again!"
"She shouldn't have been jumping around and flaunting her junk to my son then!" The mother told her, Danny sitting up, ready to jump at Janie's aid if he needed to. "She was just asking for it!"
"Yeah, she was bouncing around all over the place." The boy muttered, flinching when Janie turned her glare to him.
"She was nine years old, you prick!" She growled, smacking him across the face, Danny jumping up and grabbing her arm, sitting her down, the mother looking shocked. But she wasn't as shocked as everyone in the room when she said her next words.
"You couldn't have grabbed a girl your own age?"
"He shouldn't be grabbing girls at any age." Mr. Davis told her, and assigned Christopher a month worth of suspension and the rest of the year in detention. He wasn't allowed on the playground at all, and Janie only got a month of detention for her assault on him.
As they left, Danny stopped her before she went back to class, and wrapped his arms around her.
"What's this for?" She asked, confused. "I nearly killed a guy. I thought you'd be furious!"
"I was." He told her, cradling her head. "But now, I'm proud I have one daughter at least trying to do the right thing." She smiled, her eyes watering a bit, which might've been from the pain of her eye. She was happy to have made her father happy.
And when Danny went back to the other school, he found Stephanie and DJ both sitting in their respective classrooms, and knew that he was getting this parenting thing right.
