Chapter Five - Caffrey and James
-3rd Person-
Neal was rested against Kara desk laughing and joking. Peter noticed this from his office and wondered what was going on.
"Kara, a moment." he called. Kara looked back
"Oh someone's in trouble." Neal teased making Kara scoff
"Shut up dufus." Kara stood and jogged up the steps making her way into Peters office. "Yes boss."
"Shut the door and sit." she did so "What's going on, between you and Caffrey?" he questioned the young Agent.
"Nothing is going on." Peter raised an eyebrow "I swear it's nothing. He did me a solid the other night." she shrugged it off
"A solid?" Peter questioned
"Yeah, my sister lied to my Dad that I had a boyfriend. And ever since her transition into a woman I've tried to maintain the closeness we once had but it's a little difficult. I've been struggling to admit the fact that outside of work I don't have much of a life let alone a dating one. Neal surprised me by stepping in and helping me save face. That's all." Kara admitted shrugging it off like it was no big deal.
"So you and Neal lied to your Dad? Kara." He sighed
"It's not that bad it was one dinner. Neal helped me out." Kara defended "My Dad means everything to me, and if I have to keep up the illusion of having a life outside of work for her benefit then fine. Boss, I will say it again. It's not a big deal." Peter gave up nodding.
--------
It was a bit of a deal. Sara Ellis entered the picture and thanks to Neal was dragged into the search for the music box. In the end Sara and Kara both took vacation days to go to Argentina to see the what the connection was. Upon their return things move at a quick pace, Kara offered to spend her last couple of vacation days trying to look for Valkner in the archives.
"You know I still find it weird seeing you our of a work suit." Neal commented as they looked through copies amount of paperwork.
"It's a dress, you've seen me in a dress before." Kara rolled her eyes at him "Besides I'm still...I was gonna say work free but the I realised that was a bad choice in words."
"Okay well, here's a question. Why did you decide to become and FBI Agent?" Neal wondered
"Seriously, you're asking me this right now when we've got an entire room full of paper to go through?" Kara retorted
"I'm curious." he shrugged her off
"No, you're bored. This is what confounds me, you can sit stand for hours forging paintings, bonds, sculptures and the like yet sifting through paperwork and your fidgety like a child." Kara shook her head and continued to look through the documents
"It was just a question" he mumbled
"Fine, I watched a lot of crime shows as a kid, happy?"
"You're lying." Kara ignored him and continued looking through the documents for Vougner
--------
Kara had moved to look through the stacks, when Neal had left to finish to a case. Neal entered and Kara looked up. Neal shoed the swan foil covered food making Kara chuckle
"Thank you. I'm starving. So are you back to being Neal Caffrey now instead of Peter Burke?" she grinned "I miss a lot when I'm not on duty."
"Yeah, yeah I did."
"Oh, gourmet finger food, ex...." she was cut off as the rolling blackouts caught up with the archives.
"Guess the blackout finally caught up to this grid." Neal Commented
"Mozzie, gave me a lantern." she leaned over past Neal and when she came back. The two were close. Neal leant in to kiss the Off duty Agent. Kara returned the kiss and the two proceeded to make out. Neal lifted her onto the side of the stacks as they unfastened clothes. That was when the power came back on. Neal pulled away.
"I..'I'm sorry." She breathed slightly come back to reality.
"No need to be.." he kissed her again.
"Uh, Kara I got some..." Mozzie walked in on the two and they fixed them selves up as Mozzie stood there awkwardly "Hi Neal."
---------
Neal and Peter were kidnapped by Adler and when Kara, Mozzie and Jones caught up to them. Neal and Alex were kissing. When Neal parted away he then saw her just as she cuffed one of Adler's men. She spared him a glance and led him away. Later on the team dispersed after all having a task to do on finding Adler. As Kara worked she glanced back at Alex who was grabbing a cup of coffee. Kara stop and went over.
"A bunch of us Feds breathing down your neck. I'm guessing this isn't your regular idea of fun." Kara commented
"Yeah, it beats being held hostage. Just barely." Alex lightly joked
"We haven't been officially introduced. I'm Kara James" Kara held out her hand
"Alex." Alex shook Kara's hand "You seem a little young to be in the F.B.I." Kara chuckled
"Yeah, I'm what you'd call a smart ass, over achiever, know it all." Alex found that funny
"Huh and you chose to be and FBI Agent. interesting."
"Well, I'm not the socialite, modelling, make up kind of girl like most members of my family. In fact the thought of being another carbon copy of my sisters is actually terrifying." Kara smiles
"Kara, Alex what are you two talking about?" Neal wondered butting into their conversation. Kara and Alex shared a look.
"I will leave the two of you to talk." Kara left but glance back at the two before going into the conference room.
"For a fed. I actually think she's great." Alex commented
"It's not like that...It's..." Neal trailed off was he really gonna be that guy that said it was complicated
"Yeah, Yeah it is...." Alex smiled "Never did I think Neal Caffrey having a thing with a fed." Neal changed the subject and found out Alex and her connection to everything. After speaking with Alex and Peter he then came back to Kara, who was tying her hair up.
"I'm just about to put the swat together." she stated
"Listen. What Happened with Alex was not.." Kara cut him off
"Neal, stop. I'm a big girl I can handle things like this. We need to stop kidding ourselves. We are who we are and if we were anything more, not only would it be complicated but it..." Peter came out of his office inviting them both to dinner, not that there was a choice and it was awkward.
"Peter and you look really happy together. I haven't seen a couple like that in a really long time." Kara smiled sadly "Wife of an FBI agent must be hard."
"Yeah, I would be lying if I said I didn't worry about him. But I knew who was when I fell in love with him." Elizabeth relied
"And you never tried to change that?" Kara wondered
"No why would I? I mean we're married. For better for worse. I'm sensing some hesitation." Kara laughed slightly
"Uh, unconventional raising. My parents loved each other then they liked each other, then there was image issues. Then divorce and now my dad is a woman. I think that sums it up. But what they don't have is a Neal. Don't know how that would work out."
"For better or for worse." Elizabeth didn't press anymore on the fellow agent's life instead concentration on Neal "But for the record it's actually better."
"You really think that?" Kara questioned more harshly than she mean to
"That came out a little loaded, you don't think so?"
"Well, you said it yourself i know who he is. And sure he's helped me out of a few things but..." she trailed off
"Neal is a lot of things but when it counts you can trust him."
------
Kara was getting ready to leave for the night and get some rest, it was all hands on deck to catch Adler.
"I better get going." she said to Neal.
"Kara. I mean what i said about Alex. it's over." he tried to assure her
"Yeah. At the time."
"At the time." he agreed. Kara thought about it then leant in to kiss him on the cheek
"You owe me lunch." she gave a soft smile them left
