I Smile
Luckily, he did not recognize them.
"I see you guys are stuck," he said kindly, his voice so familiar to their ears. "I fix cars for a living, so I might be able to help."
That's right. He made auto repairs. For the first time in his life, Jae was happy to see his bloated, handsome face.
"Thank... thank you," Sungjin gasped still in shock.
He walked over to the hood, opened it, set it upright, and checked the oil in the car. "Nothing, it's just a matter of electricity," he said. "Let me transfer some over."
Out from the back of his own red pick-up truck, he pulled a wire out, connected both of the cars. In only a matter of minutes, the situation was fixed.
Being a car-fixer isn't such a lousy profession, thought Jae.
"Thank... thank you," Sungjin gasped again, bowing.
"That's a mighty fine car you guys have got there," he said wistfully.
Without warning, Jae said, "You want it? We're happy to make a switch."
Everyone stared at him in disbelief. (Though, they all knew that even the manager would agree that the red pick-up truck suited Day6 more than this trashy white one).
Five minutes later Day6 were driving in an old, red, pick-up truck that had a working GPS, toward their destination.
"Can't believe that just happened," said Wonpil, "We got stuck on the road, met the man we had been playing for as the invisible background soundtrack for years ... we practically know everything about him ... and just switched cars with him... in a matter of," —he peered down at his watch— "fifteen minutes."
"That's why I always say STAN TALENT," said Jae.
"Jae," said Sungjin in a serious, solemn, formal tone, "how did you get into Kpop?"
"I've been asking myself the same question for years," he replied.
Sunjin sighed. "Well, I just wanted to say..."
Before he could finish his sentence, the emergency sound they all knew very well began to resonate, piercing into their minds (in quite the same way DAY6 pierced the hearts and souls of MyDays) and shocked them (in quite the same way every Day6 music video shocks MyDays).
Jae screamed internally. I thought this wasn't going to happen again.
Darkness surrounded them. Their feet lifted into the air, eyes closed in anticipation. Dread.
They landed on an actual stage right in front of a mass of rich-looking people dressed for a party. It took Jae a few moments to adjust his glasses and squint around to realize that it actually was a rich-people party.
The occasion was set outside in the bright sunshine, tables decorated, the dresses of women swaying in the light breeze that ruffled their neatly brushed and dyed hair, and ironed suits. Sungjin looked exceptionally good-looking and dreamy, as the stage had prompted him to.
This time something felt different. For a strange reason, it did not quite feel like they were simply an invisible soundtrack for some characters in the party.
Jae rubbed his eyes for the millionth time to register the fact that people were looking straight at them. That meant that they could see them. They weren't invisible.
He exchanged worried glances with Young K.
What does this mean?
They had thought they had escaped their fates, that they weren't a soundtrack anymore, that they were a regular band. But it was happening again... just in a different way.
Now they weren't invisible. People seemed to be waiting for them to start their performance.
The music began, and Sungjin softly started the song with words he had never sung before: "It's been a long time..."
The words "I Smile" flickered in Jae's mind. At that same moment, he caught sight of a girl in an elegant white dress standing in the crowd watching them. As they sang the song, her emotionless face twitched, and slowly, gradually, turned into a sad smile.
Caught you, thought Jae. She was obviously the main character, the person they were singing for.
Images of walking dramatically through a bright green field wearing a long, expensive-looking coat while singing for her popped into Jae's mind. He shuddered.
God, why does it always have to be so cheesy?

When the song ended, they were teleported back to the red pick-up truck, next to the forest, where they were still lost.
No one said a word. It was completely silent, except for the wind which was busy fiddling around some weeds and tall grass at the side of the old road.
Plainly, despite the changes, they were all disappointed in the fact that they were still a useless soundtrack. They had been so caught up in the feeling that they weren't, that I Smile had slapped them right back into reality, right back to the place they hated the most.
"WHY IS THIS HAPPENING AGAIN?" said Sungjin, breaking the silence. "I thought our time of being soundtrack was over."
Wonpil shivered. "We're all alone."
"C'mon guys. Let's not lose hope. If we can be a jungle, we can get out of one," said Jae.
Referencing their extraordinary talent of making jungle noises didn't stop Young K from saying, "This is not a jungle, Jae. It's just a grove of trees."
Jae wasn't ready to halt his inspirational, motivational, spiritual, ground-breaking Ted Talk for such a silly, insignificant interruption. He was not ready to give up all his goals. Jungle, my foot. He most certainly was not ready to lose his lunch money.
"We can do this. God's with us," he was saying, walking confidently to the driver's seat of the truck, "And so is our perfect inability to do anything without a scuttle of monkey business, and chaos. We might still be an invisible soundtrack to some people, but we are now also a real band to others. We serve a greater purpose." He smiled slyly, "Les geddit."
