Chapter 88
Ripley was in a panic, Yaris, you need to come here fast. I had a wreck and Jade went through the windshield. She is breathing but she is unconscious. I grabbed a medic bag knowing that it would contain splints and dematerialized. I rematerialized just a few feet away from Jade and Ripley. I went to them, running/sliding down to where they were, and dropped the bag. “I am going to check her head first,” I told Ripley, who was cradling her in his arms. I felt around on her head. There was a large bump, but it didn't break the skin which was a good sign. I left my hand on it for a minute. The size reduced. I felt around looking for more. There were some small bumps, but not too bad. I felt of the back of her neck. She moaned quietly. She probably has whiplash. I looked in the bag for a neck stabilizer. Thankfully we have one. Ripley laid her down flat and I put it on her.
“Was she not wearing the seatbelt?” I asked, a little angry at Ripley. “She was wearing it,” Ripley answered, “The airbag failed too.” I was taken aback. They both failed.
I continued checking Jade. She was covered in cuts. She had some busted ribs. Her left forearm had a fracture and her left leg was broken. “I am going to splint her arm, then I need you to help me set her leg,” I told Ripley. I quickly splinted her arm, using the supplies from the bag. “I need to set her leg. Are you ready?” I asked Ripley. He nodded his head yes. “Hold her still,” I told him. He grabbed a hold of her upper arms and held her down. I set her leg and went about splinting it. I didn't get as much of a reaction out of her as I would have liked. Something is definitely wrong.
The ambulance arrived. Two paramedics walked/slid down to us carrying a backboard. I started listing off her injuries that I had found so far. They helped me and Ripley slide her onto the board. We helped them carry her up to the ambulance, where a gurney waited. We put her on the gurney and slid her into the ambulance. “Take her to the cabin infirmary,” I told them, “I will ride in back with her.”
A crowd had gathered. Lia volunteered to drive Ripley and the girls. Ripley needed to be checked out too. He was limping and holding his side. Max volunteered to come with them to help. Antony and Kale were in charge of getting a wrecker to retrieve the Lexus and take it to a garage. James and Ethan had stayed behind to watch over the kids.
I climbed into the back of the ambulance. Max shut the doors and thumped the ambulance twice. We started moving. I took a hold of Jade's hand. I could at least relieve some of her pain. I squeezed her hand lightly. No change in her demeanor. The paramedic started an IV drip, “Would you like for me to give her something for the pain, doctor?” “Yes,” I answered. He quickly gave her some morphine. I felt of the larger bump on her head again. It had swelled up again. I left my hand on it to make it smaller. When it went back down I took her hand again.
We pulled into the drive to the main cabin. Fortunately, while they were gone, the driveway had been cleared. We stopped at the emergency entrance. Seconds later, the back doors were opened and we rushed Jade inside. “She needs a scan of her whole body, including her head,” I told Linda, the nurse that met us at the door. “Will do Dr. Do not worry. We will take good care of her,” Linda assured me. We wheeled her into a room and transferred her to a hospital bed. The paramedics left. “Linda,” my voice broke, “she has not woke up. She is unconscious.” Linda took my hand for comfort, “you know I am one of the best nurses here and you are the best doctor. We will make her better. Do not lose hope.” I nodded my head yes. Some orderlies walked in. “We are going to take her for those scans,” she told me, “you go to the waiting room and collect yourself. I will let you know when she is back.” “Okay,” I agreed.
They left the room wheeling Jade out. I went to the, thankfully empty, waiting room to collect my thoughts. I need to be level headed for Jade. I sat down with my elbows on my knees and put my head in my hands. I tried to reach her telepathically for the tenth time with no answer. I sat up, took some deep breaths and started to calm down.
Just then Lia and Ripley came in. “Yaris, Ripley is refusing medical attention,” an unhappy Lia told me. I got a wheelchair, “Jade is going to need you Ripley. A healthy you.” “Fine,” he sat in it. I wheeled him back to the emergency room and to the admissions desk. “He was in that car accident,” I told the receptionist. “I know,” she said putting an already printed laminated bracelet on his wrist, “wait a moment and a nurse will come for him. They are already expecting him.”
I pushed Ripley over to the waiting room. Lia and I sat in chairs and we waited. “Do you want to tell me what happened?” I asked as evenly as I could. “I swerved to miss a deer and lost control,” he answered, “She was asleep. I yelled her name. She woke up right as I swerved to miss the deer. We hit the tree. I saw her fly through the windshield.” A tear slid down his cheek. “Is she going to be okay?” he asked me. “I believe so. It will just take time,” I answered. She had to be. I refuse to accept a reality that does not involve her.
A nurse came out and took Ripley. Lia went with him. I already know what's wrong with him. Fractured ribs and a sprained right ankle. They will take good care of him. I just need to be alone for a little while. At least no one has contacted me with trivial matters, or with any matters. I can not deal with such things right now.
A few minutes later Linda came out to me, “She is back in her room now. You should have the test results soon.” I followed Linda to Jade's room. I took a seat right next to her bed and took her hand. Linda left us alone. I tried to reach her telepathically again, nothing. I felt of the bump on her head. It had not swollen up again. That was a promising sign. I felt around for the other smaller bumps and left my hand on each one until they were better. She sighed when I put my hand on one in particular. Another promising sign. I left my hand on it longer. I then moved my hand to a cut on her face that on anyone else would need stitches. I can not let a scar mar that beautiful face. It healed up nicely. I moved to another one that was not quite as bad, but would still scar.
Linda entered the room carrying a hospital gown. “Dr. I need to change her,” she told me. “I will help you,” I offered. She nodded her agreement. I held her hand and made her clothes disappear except for her bra and panties. Jade's torso was all bruised. I hissed through my teeth. “Perhaps we should wrap her ribs before we put the nightgown on,” Linda brought me out of my head. I just wanted to kiss Jade all over to make it better. “Yes,” I agreed. “Yaris?” Linda, uncharacteristically, addressed me by name, “Should I bring another doctor in for this?” “You probably should,” I answered. She covered Jade with a sheet. “Please go wait in the waiting room,” she told me, “the doctor will come see you soon.” “Okay,” I agreed and went to the waiting room.
Ripley, Lia and Max were waiting. “How is she?” Ripley asked, awkwardly standing up. “A different doctor is handling it,” I told him, “I can not handle it.” “That bad?” Ripley's voice cracked. “She is still not awake, but she was responding to my touch when I was healing her,” I told him, “I think that she will awaken soon. Just be patient.” Ripley sat back down. I took a chair on the other side of Lia. “How is everything going?” I asked them, “no one has contacted me about anything.” “Me either,” Ripley said. “Antony is handling it,” Max informed us, “strict orders to not bother either of you.” “Thank him for me when you go back,” I told Max. Max just nodded.
We went silent and waited. Two hours passed. I got up to go ask for an update when Dr. Green came to meet me. “How is she?” I asked. “She has a pretty serious concussion, two broken ribs, three fractured ribs, her forearm is fractured and she has a serious break on her leg. All are injuries on her left side,” he explained, “we are in the process of moving her to a private room. A nurse will come and get you when she is ready.” “Has she woke up yet?” I asked. “Yes,” he answered. I breathed a sigh of relief. “She is having some memory issues,” Dr. Green told me. “What kind of memory issues?” Ripley had appeared beside me. “She does not remember anything,” he answered, “She knows her name. I told her.”
I suspected that there could be memory loss because of the location of the concussion. I just was not sure of how severe it would be. “So, she is not going to know us?” Ripley asked. Lia and Max were behind him now. “No,” Dr. Green answered, “It may be temporary. It may be permanent. We do not really know how long it will last. We just have to wait and see.” Ripley went silent. I looked at him. Ofcourse it was a shock to him. He is not a doctor. A tear slid down his cheek. “Someone will come get you when she is ready,” Dr. Green spoke to me this time. “Thank you,” I nodded my agreement.
“Come sit down Rip,” I put my hand on his shoulder and led him back to our seats. Lia and Max followed. We sat down. The guilt on his face was painful to look at. “Ripley, you know that this is not your fault,” I started, “It was just an accident. I would have tried to miss the deer too.” He did not say anything. “You said she was wearing the seatbelt?” I asked. “Yes,” he looked at me, “I waited until she put it on to start driving, like I always do.” “And the airbag didn't deploy?” I asked. “No,” he answered. “Kale is with the mechanic now,” I told them, “He says that the airbag was turned off and the seatbelt had been tampered with. “What?” Ripley asked, “Who would do that?” “I do not know,” I answered, “but we are going to find out.”
Nathan entered and was walking to the admissions desk when he noticed us. “How is she doing?” he asked, sitting down next to me. “She is awake now but has lost her memory,” I told him, “She has several broken bones and fractures, a concussion and she is cut up.” “What happened?” he asked. I explained it to him, “We are waiting while they move her to a room.”
We all sat in silence with our thoughts for a while. Kale came through, telling me that they got fingerprints from the airbag switch. I would not be surprised if the guilty party got drunk and started bragging about their misdeeds. Then we will have someone to compare the fingerprints to. I hope that Kale is right. I hope that it will be that simple. He promised to contact me with any further developments.
I was starting to get antsy, then Linda entered. She led us to a different waiting room. A nicer one, with free coffee, water and donuts. It was definitely higher class. There were recliners and a loveseat. The décor was in blue and gray.
“Yaris first, then the rest of you can come in after a few minutes,” Linda told them. They all sat down. I followed Linda down a long hallway. She stopped at a door to the right. “Are you ready?” she asked. I took a deep breath and nodded my head. She turned and I followed her in.
