Reality

Reality hit me harder than ever before that night and seeing her this upset just reminds me of how depressed she was that night. I glanced over at her to reassure myself that she was okay but it didn't work. I brushed it off.. If she didn't wanna talk right now, then I might as well just leave it be until the time is right. I pulled up to my Grandma's house and I opened the car door for her.

Autumn: Thank you, Trevor.

She said as she kept walking towards the door and I watched her walk away..

Trevor: You're welcome.

I said, seemingly to myself, confused. What's going on with her? She wasn't acting like this before we went to the hospital.. Maybe it's something that Jacob said to her.. I thought as I knocked on the door. Before I knew it, my Aunt Juley was at the door and let us in.

Trevor: Hey Auntie. How are you?

Aunt: Hey Trevor, I'm doing good. I see you brought your little girlfriend with you.

I smiled and she pinched my cheek.

Aunt: What's your name, sweetheart?

Autumn: Autumn.

Aunt: Autumn.. That's a pretty name.

Autumn: Thank you.

She smiled. I knew it wasn't a full smile.. Just a smile of disguise and I wanted to know if what I thought happened was correct.

Aunt: Trevor, your Grandma's in the kitchen. Autumn and I are gonna have a little talk. Okay?

I gave her a look.

Aunt: Go. Shoo fly!

I shook my head and went to see about my Grandma.

Trevor: Hey Grandma.

Grandma: Hey baby, how are you?

Trevor: I'm good, how are you?

Grandma: I'm fine.

I nodded and looked around for a little bit. Her skin was getting darker and darker in patches each time I saw her.

Grandma: Well don't act like no stranger! Come over here and give your Grandmomma a hug!

I smiled and went in to hug her. She kissed my cheek and I enjoyed her hug as long as I could. She's not getting any younger and for all I know, this could be the last time that I see her.. But Autumn doesn't know that. She just knows that my Grandma has been sick.. I don't wanna believe it, but the signs are all there.. But at least I know that she'll go peacefully..

Grandma: How's the girl of yours?

Trevor: She's doing okay. I just took her to go see her ex in the hospital and she came out a little off.. She won't talk to me.

She kept peeling the potatoes for dinner that night. That's how I knew that she was thinking.

Grandma: Well, baby. If you know it's not your fault, just wait for the right time to talk it out with her. But that's if she wants to talk about it.

I nodded.

Trevor: Okay.

She started peeling the rest of her potato and then took a glance at me.

Grandma: What on your mind, baby?

Trevor: Nothing, Grandma.

Grandma: Boy, don't you lie to me. I'll skin your tail worst than this potato.

I sighed and nodded as I rubbed the back of my neck.

Trevor: Grandma.. Grandma, I'm just scared..

Grandma: Scared of what?

Trevor: I'm scared of losing you. If and when you go, I don't know what I'll do without you.

Grandma: Trevor, remember our special verse?

Trevor: Yes. Second Timothy, chapter one, verse seven.

Grandma: Good.

She nodded and went right back to peeling her potatoes.

Grandma: Remember that death is nothing to fear. Even when I depart from this world, I shall always be with you. In here.

She touched the center of my chest where my heart was located.

Grandma: And in here.

She touched her head and I nodded as I sighed.

Trevor: Hey Grandma?

Grandma: Yes baby?

Trevor: You think that Grandpa and Mark are waiting to see you again, up there?

She smiled.

Grandma: Baby. Where the sun shines, he shines on me. And when my time comes, I'm ready. I've served my time. Now it's your turn to grab the mic.

She winked and we laughed. She was trying to mix my generation with her generation for a moment. I Love my Grandma, but abiding by a book is hard in times like these.

~Autumn~

As soon as Trevor was out of sight, she smiled at me.

Juley: Well, now that he's gone, we can get to the good stuff. Where you go to school at, girl?

Autumn: I go to the same school that Trevor went to for High school, last year.

Juley: Oh okay. That's a good school.

Autumn: Yes ma'am. It is.

Juley: What type of grades you get?

Autumn: I have a current Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0

She nodded.

Juley: That's great. Keep it up so that you won't make the same mistake I did.

Autumn: What mistake was that?

She flicked the towel to get the creases out and sighed.

Juley: I thought I fell in love with this boy that was really no good and got pregnant by him. I ended up just barely finishing school and becoming a single mom who could barely manage to pay for my college tuition.

My eyes widened. This woman has done a lot.

Autumn: Wow..

Juley: Yeah, Mark was hard headed but he made his momma proud.

Autumn: Mark? Trevor mentioned something about writing a song for a Mark who passed away a little while ago.

Juley: Yeah.. My Mark. Mark Cotton. I gave him his father's last name, thinking that the broad was gon come back but..

She shrugged.

Juley: The boys called him Prob cause he was always causing problems of his own, but solving everyone else's.

She smiled.

Juley: He was a good kid. He went to parties with Trevor and his friends but one party that he went to had the roof on fire. Things got crazy and my baby died right there in Trevor's arms..

She nodded as she looked up. I could tell that she was a strong woman. She refused to cry and I had no idea about the whole situation. All Trevor ever said about him was that he died and wrote a song about him that he couldn't record for the longest.

Autumn: I'm sorry..

Juley: No, don't be. My baby is care free, now. Up there with daddy and such. He's better off there than he is here.

She smiled. I nodded. I couldn't think of how I could change the subject, but she did.

Juley: How's Trevor treating you?

Autumn: He treats me like I matter in the world. Like I have a special purpose on this earth.

Juley: Hmm, like a queen.

Autumn: Yeah, I guess you could say that.

I smiled.

Juley: He better. Otherwise I'd tan his hide.

I laughed.

Autumn: That's not necessary.

She smiled just as Trevor came back and looked at him, then at me.

Juley: Well, I see that you two have to get going now, huh?

Trevor: Yeah. We have a long day ahead of us tomorrow.

Juley: Well alright, baby. Goodnight.

She hugged him and kissed his cheek, leaving a red lip stain on his cheek.

Trevor: Night Aunt Juley.

He went to go stand by the door and she pulled me in for a hug.

Juley: Goodnight Autumn.

Autumn: Goodnight Miss Juley.

Juley: Oh come on now. You're basically my niece now. Pretty soon, you'll be married before you know it.

Trevor: Aunt Juley..

He said with a hint of sternness but still a lot of respect to back it up. He was tired.. I could tell. But I was surprised by what she had said to me.

Autumn: Thank you, Aunt Juley. Goodnight.

We left and the car ride was a little more on the quiet side at first. Then I grabbed Trevor's hand.

Autumn: Hey.. I'm sorry about earlier. I had gotten into it with Jacob and it really messed up my day.

Trevor: It was more like your attitude but..

I hit him playfully and he laughed.

Autumn: Shut up!

Trevor: Aww, I'm sorry baby. You forgive me?

He said as he approached a red light and pouted. I laughed at his cuteness.

Autumn: Maybe.

He smiled and kissed my lips sweetly.
