Chapter 25
TW: Mentions of death/murder, intrusive thoughts about hurting someone, violence
"Well, man, you did give us a big scare." Remy chuckled, nudging Damien lightly to the side as they walked down the hallway to Damien's locker. "Are you sure your head doesn't hurt, or you don't feel weird or-" he started. They were all worried about him. All the tests showed he was fine, but there was always a percentage of them being wrong or mixed up with someone else's.
Damien rolled his eyes and looked at him. "I'm fine, Remy. Don't worry." He looked forward and frowned as his gaze landed on Roman. "Asshole..." he muttered, glaring at him as Roman looked his way.
"Has he spoken to you yet?" Remy asked him quietly as they got closer. Damien shook his head. "Jesus... how much of an asshole can he be? And I thought all his pride was fake as shit." He sighed, wrapping an arm around Damien's shoulders. "Well, babes, now that you are available again... let's talk trash about assholes." He smirked, glancing at Roman.
Damien pushed past Roman. At that moment, his brain seemed to glitch. He shut his eyes and stopped walking for a moment. Remy let go of him and turned, frowning lightly.
"Are you okay?" Remy asked worriedly. Damien nodded opening his eyes again. His vision was slightly blurry. And, Remy could swear that, for a split second, his eyes were both brown. He froze for a moment but went back to walking. "Okay, let me know if you're not." He smiled, turning to look at him, almost nervously.
"I'm fine," he said, giving him a small smile. He glanced back and saw Roman walking away. He bit his lip and turned back to Remy, walking after him. "He didn't even text me after what happened. It's like he's truly convinced that I killed Remus. God, he's fucking insane," he muttered.
They headed to the cafeteria, and Damien frowned, seeing Virgil talk to Jane. What on earth could they be talking about? Without any kind of warning, he started walking towards them.
"Jane," he said with a small smile. Virgil seemed to tense up when he saw Damien. Jane, however, didn't flinch as she turned to look at him questioningly. "Can we talk for a moment?" he asked.
She and Virgil exchanged a look for a moment. "Of course." She smiled. "Thanks, Virgil," she said softly before following Damien far enough to be able to talk privately. "What's up?" she asked.
Without saying a word, Damien pulled her closer by her wrist and kissed her. Jane froze for a moment before kissing back because, yeah, Virgil had just told her to be careful. And, sure, he and his boyfriend had just broken up, whatever. But she had been crushing on him for most of high school, and she was not letting this chance go away.
Remy and Virgil froze at the sight of Damien kissing her. Honestly, Virgil wasn't entirely shocked, but the fact that Damien was kissing /a girl/ worried him even more. Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck! He was slipping through his fingers. No!
As Remy watched, everything that had happened that year seemed to flash before his eyes. Everything that had happened. Everything strange that had happened... it was all after that damned night. The night they decided to mess with a ghost. The ghost of a serial killer.
Then it all clicked.
"Virgil..." he said, almost inaudibly. Virgil hummed, looking at him. "What was J.D.'s girlfriend's name?" he asked quietly, his voice wavering slightly.
Virgil thought for a moment, looking at Damien and Jane again. "Veronica Sawyer, I think," he answered, not understanding the sudden question. "Why?"
"We're all fucked..." he said quietly. "She's her daughter." He looked at Virgil, who froze in pure and utter shock at the new information. "We're fucked..." he repeated. Virgil looked at him and glanced at Damien and Jane, frowning lightly.
"Come with me. I need to talk to Roman," Virgil said, grabbing Remy's wrist and pulling him away before the other could say anything about it. His frown deepened as he heard Virgil mutter 'shit' repeatedly under his breath.
They looked around, but there was no trace of Roman inside the school. "I think he just got out of drama... he's probably outside with the other drama people," Remy said, leading Virgil outside. "Virgil..." he said, stopping as they got out of the door. Virgil looked at him and tilted his head. "That's not Damien, right?" he asked.
Virgil bit his lip. "It's... complicated. Sometimes he is, and other times he isn't... the latter has been happening more and more often lately..." he said before spotting Roman. "Roman!" he called, only to be ignored. Asshole. "Roman Prince, we need to talk. It's life or death." He walked over to him and Roman looked at him before turning to the others from drama. Virgil clenched his jaw and grabbed Roman's wrist with more force he'd ever had before. "I am not losing my brother." He growled, dragging Roman away against his will.
Roman huffed. "Listen and get that through your skull. I. don't. care." He growled back. "He killed my brother. He's dead for all I care." He snatched his wrist from Virgil's tight grip forcefully. "I don't care what he does. I don't care what happens to him. I don't care about him. So, stop trying to force me to forgive him! I'm not going to!"
Virgil clenched his fists and took a deep breath before slapping Roman hard. "You fucking love him! God. You were going to propose to him at prom! You- you /can't/ leave him now..." he said. His enraged tone fading to an almost pleading one.
Roman glared at him. "I said it before and I will again. Watch me," he said lowly before turning to leave.
"Hey, Dee, what are Virgil and Remy doing talking to Roman?" Jane asked as they sat on the bleachers just above them with Logan and Emile.
Damien shrugged. "No clue. But Roman is non-existent to me. So, there's no need to worry about that." He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and turned to Logan and Emile, who were talking about something school-related Damien didn't really care about.
Roman looked up and frowned. "Oh, no. I am not going to allow that," he said. He turned to the few drama club guys left there. "We've got a snake to stomp on," he said, walking up the bleachers to where Damien and the others were, followed by six other guys. Upon seeing him, Logan and Emile frowned lightly. "Get off the bleachers," he said.
Damien heard him and frowned, looking up at him. "Excuse me?" he asked, nearly spitting out venom as he glared at him.
"Get a different place. This was my spot before you were someone," Roman spat. Damien glanced at Jane and looked down at Virgil and Remy, who were looking form a couple of steps below.
He stood up. "Are you fucking serious?" he asked. How far could Roman's stupidity and foolishness go? "From what I can see, I am someone now. And you're not." He smirked, knowing he was striking a nerve as Roman growled lowly. "Oh, be careful, Princey, we wouldn't want people the beast inside, would we?" He blinked innocently, tilting his head slightly to the side.
Roman clenched his fists. "Get off." His features darkened. And it would've been enough to scare Damien if it had been before the Ouija experience. He was different now. He wasn't intimidated by Roman. Not a single bit.
"Make me, bitch," he said, crossing his arms over his chest. Again, just like earlier, his brain seemed to do something weird. He didn't close his eyes this time. He just glared at Roman. His eyes a deep brown... something Roman didn't notice. But the other guys did.
Virgil froze, a wave of fear and helplessness drowning him as he saw his brother's eyes. Suddenly, everything seemed to drown with him. The view, the sound... He could only hear his breathing picking up speed.
"Are we gonna have a problem?" Roman asked, with so much superiority it made Damien want to push him off the bleachers. Roman looked down at him as if he were smaller than him... which he was, but he hated it right now.
He clenched his fists. "I don't know, you asshole, are we?" he hissed, stepping closer.
Remy looked at Virgil, noticing he was barely there anymore. Great. One more thing to deal with.
Roman glanced at Jane and scoffed, looking at Damien again. "I don't want your new girlfriend to see you get beat up." He smirked. "You've moved on real fast, haven't you? You are a fucking asshole."
Damien looked at him, tightening his fists and clenching his jaw momentarily. "Fucking try me. I doubt you'll be able to land a punch decently." He scoffed. "I doubt she'll care. And she has a name. I'd appreciate you using it when you dare talking about her." He glared at him darkly. "Moving on isn't hard when your boyfriend accuses you of killing your best friend." He hissed angrily.
"Virge?" Remy asked, softly, as Virgil started trembling as he sunk further and further into his own mind. "Virgil," he said, shaking him lightly. "Virgil!" he tried again, louder this time, before heating a hit.
"Damien!" Emile said as Damien pushed Roman to the ground. It was a dangerous spot. Just an inch to the right and they'd fall. "Stop!" he tried pulling Damien away from Roman, unsuccessfully.
Jane frowned and saw Remy and Virgil, immediately noticing there was something wrong. She looked at Damien. She bit her lip and went towards Virgil and Remy. "Hey, Virgil... are you alright?" she asked. She was aware he wasn't, but she wanted to know how bad it was. When Virgil didn't respond, she turned. "Damien!" she called. He froze for a moment. "Something's wrong with Virgil," she said.
Damien looked at her, his eyes back to normal. He quickly got up and rushed to Virgil. "Jane, go to the cafeteria and get a bottle of cold water. The bigger the better," he said. "Virgil... hey. It's going to be okay," he said softly, brushing his bangs aside. "Remy, go get my jacket from my locker and a towel. 2812," he said.
As soon as he said that, they both rushed to get what Damien had asked for. Damien could feel Roman watching from behind. But he didn't care. All he had in his head was to help Virgil get better. He glanced to the side as he saw Logan.
"What's wrong?" he asked when he was close enough. "Panic attack?" he asked. Damien nodded and took Virgil to one of the seats with Logan's help. "Emile is keeping Roman away... Virgil's worried about you... we all are... even Roman."
Damien frowned and looked at Logan. "Worried about me? Why? He's the one having the panic attack."
"This time. You haven't been yourself many times since the night we came to the school. It's like you're not okay. We're all worried about you. When you were in the hospital, Roman came. He was worried sick."
Damien bit his lip. "He hasn't asked /me/ how I am. He doesn't seem too worried." Logan sighed and Remy and Jane arrived. "I have a test now. Let me know how he is. And maybe you should take him home when he is back," he said. Damien nodded and gave him a small smile as Logan walked away.
He focused back on Remy and Jane and smiled lightly. "Okay, I need the towel soaked with the cold water," he said. They did as told and handed him the towel. He sat beside Virgil and gently dabbed the towel over Virgil's forehead since his temperature tended to rise considerably when he was that far gone and he didn't want him getting a fever. "V? Can you hear me?" he asked as he touched the back of his neck with the wet towel. Virgil flinched slightly and whimpered. "I'm here. You're safe, okay? I'm right here," he said softly, continuing to move the towel slowly. "Do you think you can come back, yet?" he asked.
Whenever Virgil entered an extremely panicked state, he would hide deep within himself and wouldn't come back until he felt completely safe... which once took a few hours of Damien trying to comfort him so he'd be fine when their parents returned home from a long business trip.
Damien bit his lip and looked up at Jane. "You guys can go to class, this might take a while," he said. "We'll be fine." He smiled lightly. Remy and Jane looked at each other and nodded. "I'll text you if I can't go to last period either. Can one of you go tell whoever his next teacher is that he's not going to class?"
"Of course," Jane said, smiling lightly. She glanced up and saw Roman was there, still. "Be safe, yeah?" she said, looking at Damien. He nodded and they left the jacket and bottle on the seat beside him and headed to class.
Damien let out a sigh, trying to bring Virgil back to reality. He tensed up as he heard Roman speak, "is he alright?" he asked. He bit his tongue. Of course, he wasn't alright! Jesus Christ, he was so fucking dense.
"As if you cared," Janus hissed, not even bothering to look at him. "Don't even pretend to care about him when you didn't bother to ask if I was alright after spending a day and a night in the hospital for protecting you."
Roman frowned. "For protecting me? Are you serious? I never asked you for help. Why do you think you are everyone's savior?" he asked. "You got involved because you wanted to. You hit your head. So what? I don't give a fuck about what happens to you."
"We'll see about that..." Damien muttered under his breath, his eyes shifting to brown for a split second.
